Show them where they haven't paid for it?
The statement was the amount of money they have spent on the game, shows that they have purchased something and for the size of it that's a lot of money. Even more so that year one is obsolete now but yet it still required to be purchased to get access to this event.
Also bungie has said before that these small events with micro transactions, will help fund the development of future events like these. Therefor as a user, if you have purchased anything from bungie you have paid for it already.

When I started destiny a few hours ago, it automatically started an update that gave me crimson doubles. That's "where" I didn't pay for it.
But like this person said.
You have already paid for the game.
Plus it's an update. Do you pay for an update on the system software?
All depends what context you place it in. And that's all I was trying to point out ;) play devil's advicout
If I get free oil changes for a year from my dealership, the price I paid for my car doesn't negate the fact that the oil changes are complimentary. I know nothing is free in the literal sense, but this event/update is as close as it gets.
