Why Three Of Coins Should Not Be Nerfed (And Why The Destiny Community's Best Traits Get It Into Trouble)

Recently, Bungie Employee Cozmo replied to a thread concerning a Three Of Coins exploit, hinting that the drop rate for Exotics that they boost would soon be dropped. I feel this is a bad idea, and if the past is any indicator, I think Bungie already agrees with my reasons why. One of the defining traits of this community is how we adapt. If some new power weapon drops, we make a beeline. See Suros, Gjallerhorn. It's what keeps our Strikes and Raids running smooth and our Crucible streaks going. We also adapt to nerfs. See AR's (pre-2.0) and Fusion Rifles. If you nerf the drop rate for the Three Of Coins, even if the nerf is reasonable, a large portion of the community will never touch them again. They will be deemed not worth the coins or trouble, and the admittedly interesting idea Bungie had will end up just another failed experiment like Commendations. Nerfing the drop rate is not the answer. Cozmo's post also hinted (to me at least) that one solution Bungie is considering is increasing the amount of Strange Coins required for Xur's inventory. (See: "The Nine may be delighted you're blowing them all now") This too, is a bad idea because of another shining virtue of this community: We are tenacious. Any time Bungie has made a currency more valuable or scarce (or both) the community immediately develops a voracious hunger for them. If you lower the drop rate of Coins from Rare Engrams, increase the amount needed to purchase items from Xur, or implement any kind of forced-rarity upon them, the community will respond. All methods of farming those Blue Engrams will become major focuses for your average player. Chest exploits, "loot caves", etc. Basically all distractions from actually *playing the game* will spike, and the same mentality that created the first loot cave will return. The only solution that will not have an adverse affect on the way we play, or the mood of the Destiny Playerbase, is to patch the enemies themselves. All Bungie has to do is make sure the only Ultras are the ones at the end of Strikes and the Bosses in Raids. This way, the Three Of Coins remains a valuable consumable, and they encourage play of the precise activities that should award great loot: Strikes and Raids. Everybody wins.
