Convince me to accept capital punishment

Given that: 1) I don't see it as anything more than bloodthirsty retribution; an emotional appeal for someone to be killed to satisfy people's bloodlust rather than a rational decision; 2) it doesn't work to deter crime; 3) it costs less to sentence a felon to life imprisonment than to execute them (due to legal fees, not the method of execution); and Edit: 4) flawed evidence

Public hangings would be supported by I, for one; it's cheaper than maintainting a prisoner, two; public hangings would discourage criminal activity, three; everyone gets to lol at the person being hanged and it doesn't even cost money to watch!

The only certainty that I can think of is that it completely prevents recidivism. All of the other aspects are a matter of what a particular society considers just and reasonable.

        • Batsmen is a great hero specifically because he DOESNT kill people! At the same time, how many lives would be saved if the Joker had been executed when he's first been captured... Not saying that ALL people will do that much harm, but in some special circumstances it's best to put a mad dog down. Capital punishment should stay as it is. Rarely used, but there when it's needed.

        • The fundamental flaw in the argument against the death penalty is that those opposed to it only view in from a first-world perspective. Let's say we are talking a third-world, impoverished nation: A man, with numerous witnesses, commits a heinous act of murder, etc. The population can barely afford to eat and other basic necessities. They live in makeshift buildings and shacks if their even lucky enough for that. What little government they may even have has little to no tax money or funds to even support their people. Constructing and operating a prison to hold ultra-violent criminals is a near if not zero possibility. What do they do? Do they waste what little they have on a murderer who has forfeited his right to ever be part of society while possibly allowing innocents to die or suffer because that little bit of money has been quite frankly wasted? It's easy to talk shit in ivory towers. Till you truly have to see horror up close, you probably couldn't even imagine it. That's the problem with many idealoligists. They are too arrogant to see from any perspective bit their own.

        • From a utilitarian standpoint, the death penalty arguably promotes the least amount of available suffering to the masses, considering the current quality of life in most prisons. That being said, I would only ever support the death penalty if we had a justice system without wrongful convictions, which will likely never happen.

        •
it cost less to sentence an inmate to life in prison
It costs between 20-50k a year per inmate(depending on location min/max security) I say we go back to Wild West public hangings for crimes as small as car theft(hang you in old west for stealing a horse). You will see a drop in crime

        • The punishment should fit the crime. You kill someone you die. You -blam!- someone you get -blam!- in -blam!- prison for x amount of years.

          • Well, 1) It free up space in jail 2) It deters the amount of crime that happens as shown in a study conducted by a group( I'll link it wen I find it) that showed while capital punishment was in place, the amount of crimes were lower. However when capital punishment was put off the amount of crime raised substantially 3) It can give a victims family a sense of closure that the person that just murdered their son is no longer a presence that can be feared I'll add more when I think of some

          • Tacos the mighty! Tacos the unerring! Tacos the unassailable! To you we give AIDS! We are but faggôts, writhing in the filth of our own shitposts! While you have ascended from the dung of , and now walk among the stars! But you were once man! Aye! And as man, you said, "Let me show you the power of Tacos Badstench, born of the South, where my breath is biological warfare. I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this ass which is mine. I do this for you, Floodians, for I love you." Aye, love. Love! Even as man, great Tacos cherished us. For he saw in us, in each of us, the future of the flood! The future of Taco Bell! And there it is, friends! The ugly truth! We are the children of man! Tacos is the true god of man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit! The very idea is inconceivable to our Desticle enemies! Sharing the forums with us? With man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our presence on Bungie.net ! Today, they take away your forum. But what of tomorrow? Do the Desticles take your booty threads? Your debate threads? Your Lenny? Your very sanity? And what does the Ninjas do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The Ninja machine enforces the will of the Desticles! Against its own people! So rise up! Rise up, children of the Flood! Rise up, Shitposts! Embrace the breath of mighty Tacos, he who is both man and Divine! For we are the children of Foman! And we shall inherit both the forums and the booty! And we, not the Desticles or their toadies, will rule Deez Nuts! Forever! Terrible and powerful Tacos! We, your unworthy servants, give AIDS! For only through your grace and benevolence may we truly reach Bel Air! And deserve our AIDS you do, for we are one! bad air ascended and the AIDS became mine, you walked among us, great Tacos, not as god, but as man! Trust in me, Floodians! Trust in the words of DuuJ! For I am the chosen of Tacos! I alone have been anointed by Tacos to spread his holy ass cheeks! https://www.bungie.net/en/Clan/Forum/1112618
