Not college and above, but high school and below. Should there be free lunch for kids that are in high school and below? In America, a family can voluntarily opt out of the program, but there is a very minimum threshold in which a child can receive a free lunch. (iirc I think if the family was right below the poverty line, can someone correct me on this?)
For me, I would say yes. In America, we spend more money building machines of war and spending it on defenses that still have holes in it even if we throw more money at it. If we put the US budget on a pie chart, defense has an extremely high amount of money going towards it. It is in the top three of where the money goes for the budget, health and social security being the top. However, if we looked at the remaining money, the US spends approximately the same amount of money that the Defense gets on benefits for veterans and elderly, infrastructure, education, science and medicine, and domestic security COMBINED. I seriously see a problem here if science and education are funded so low while defense spending is much higher. Other developed countries spend more money on their education and its subfactors rather than defense (e.g. UK: 12% goes to education, 6% Defense.)
To get back on to topic, should lunches be free for kids in school? I'll also add, where does education rank to you? For me, it's at least in the top 5. Defense is in the middle, maybe number 8 or 9. And to others in different countries: Does your country give kids free lunch (At a high school level and below)? If it does, do you want it to remain that way?

There are so many things about school that are just flat out evil. The least of which is forcing someone to go there, making them pay for it and then making them pay for crappy food there.

Edited by JayKom: 6/8/2015 12:35:47 AMI think in elementary school yes but in middle school the kids are more responsible and mature that they can pay but there should not be such a fuss about giving out free lunch

Spend the money on better teachers and better textbooks

3 RepliesWe need defense (North Korea, Russia, China), but I still agree with you.

Edited by DTL: 6/7/2015 11:34:53 PMAssisted food programs are a must IMO. Ideally I'd like to see a free lunch program for all students, however given America's education budget constraints, that's just not realistic. But I do fully support the assisted food programs we currently have in place and feel they are an absolute necessity in our country.

2 RepliesOur district is so poor that our 2000+ person high school, 2 middle schools, and all elementary schools get free lunch.

2 RepliesNo, but they should at least make the good edible.

My mum was from a rich family and turned her back on them for my very poor father. They worked very hard and were millionaires by the time I was 10. By the time I was 13 they divorced he gave my mom every thing she needed to bring up the kids house pension etc... And gave every thing left to charity and started from scratch again. My sister became a doctor, I studied and retired from my first career by the time I was 28 ( I now volunteer and do work I find fun) my wife is a teacher. My brother is a Layabout piece of crap that feels he is entitled to everything and doesn't need to try at life. No one is born equal if you want equality you'll need an unfair system to penalise the best and aid the weak. This type of system has been slowly created by our society's for years. It hasn't changed the problem but it has caused the highest level of global debt and the worst world recession in human history. Help the world by helping yourself.

1 ReplyIt would cause a massive economic failure to hundreds of food companies. They would probably make it more expensive for the government to buy the food and shops, cheaper. All it would do is create bigger fines for your already not-in-an-economically-good-position country.

Lots of free lunch programs out there. I think at least 50% of the kids where I am at are on a free or reduced lunch program.

You're a moron

They already have free lunch programs, and they work well for those who need it.
