Cosmos re-launched tonight, what did you think?
I thought it was pretty true to the spirit of the original. The graphics were pretty impressive. Don't know if I like the cartoons over live-acted scenes. Was also surprised they didn't shy away from criticizing religion for executing early astronomers and stunting scientific progress like Sagan did.

It's pop-sci at its core. Less of the philosophical meanderings of Sagan and more of the silly cartoons with very little to do with actual science. It would be a good show for kids, but it's kind of worrying that science has to be dressed up in CGI and drama to appeal to the masses.

1 ReplyI forgot about it last night. Will get baked and watch it tonight

2 RepliesIt wasn't bad. IMO, it's not going to wow or amaze anyone who is already a science-geek or who regularly watches this genre of television. What I noticed is that it was a solid presentation that appears (at least to my eye) to be aimed at those who DON'T usually watch television shows about cosmology and science. For example, I eat these shows with a spoon, but my wife? She doesn't. What I discovered was after watching last night, she commented that this was the first time these concepts and ideas were presented to her in a way that she not only found consumable, but that she didn't lose interest or need me to pause the show and "explain what the egghead is talking about". So, while I enjoyed it, it was more nostalgia and a rehash for me. But for who I think it is intended? It is a good presentation and doesn't move too fast or too slow.

The part where it was showing the observable universe reminded me of a nightmare I had. But other than that, it was ok.

1 ReplyI missed it. NDT respects Sagan and his work, so at least the show is in good hands.

3 RepliesI missed it :( Guess I'll have to wait for it to be uploaded to youtube or something.

Edited by pileofdead: 3/10/2014 6:08:43 PMIt was so-so. It's a shame they were still purporting theories that no modern physicist supports anymore. Carl Sagen's ideas in general aren't talked about very much at all these days.

It was really amazing, I'm happy to see finally a good educational show!

1 ReplyIt was an introductory piece made to engage those who have barely dabbled into the subjects presented. With that in mind, I was impressed. A 10-15 yr. old me would have been absolutely fascinated. However if you're viewing it outside that scope, I don't see this as being a huge inspiration for you. 9/10 would recommend.

Loved it. I wished I could have watched more of it.

Edited by RIP delta: 3/10/2014 5:32:32 AMLooked flash but was considerably simpler than the low budget stuff Brian Cox does on the BBC Nothing new, aside from the budget I assume. I understand it may be going for mass appeal, and to be an introductory piece, but having just finished watching it I can't help but feel that I've seen many shows that have said it all before - granted, with not quite so nice visuals. As an introductory piece for someone who has never heard of space before...I guess its ok

41 RepliesLots of speculative theories and assumptions being presented as historical fact. I'm not impressed, I guess I'm not impressed.
