They knew portal would kill the game before D1 even launched.....
They knew......... So they removed it.
If ever proof was needed that they want you moving to marathon, this is it. They're actively killing destiny so marathon can survive
& for the 'bungie said marathon isn't for destiny players' crowd, riddle me this, why are all the marathon pre order bonuses marathon themed items IN destiny, they openly want you over there, a game with a new season every 2 months, a very time heavy game, taking players from their other game that needs every player it can muster.
It's joever, no wonder he jumped ship.

The portal is a good idea IF it compliments the Director, not replaces it. Imagine they used in a way to rotate old planets and activities that are no longer in game for extra loot ontop of the Director?

1 ReplyReminds me of when DICE did that 128 player crap in 2042 when DICE from over a decade prior did all the playtesting and legwork and determined that 128 player battlefield isn't fun, and doesnt make the game better in any way. Modern DICE decided to ignore it and go 128 and released the worst BF game since hardline

Nobody that currently works at bungie was a part of this. So it’s not strange to see history repeat it self. Not only that the times are different and bungie is different dei is way more important, and it’s easy to see the game has to become simpler so more roads lead to eververse store and employee can do less while bungie needs to earn more.

Someone back then - who is still here now - thought the portal was a great idea but it got shut down. Now this person is in charge enough to make it happen - so he builds it and it fails lol That's what happened here. Arrogance. Again.

I personally would have preferred it if this [i]was[/i] an intentional killing of the game, at least that implies someone with intelligence sat down and decided to make this happen, rather than the studio being staffed by a bunch of witless goons. I would explain the preorder bonuses as being typical practice for Bungie. They know there is a vulnerable sub population of the playerbase that will lap up anything Bungie, so why not do this? After all it costs them almost nothing to throw in those cosmetics.

5 RepliesI think it was just an accumulation of bad decisions brought on by the influx of a new development team. Happens ever time new owners take over a business, they have all kinds of new ideas to turn the business around, but if you don't understand your audience or client base it could doomed to failure. Many ideas on their own seemed great, but they were not a good fit for a long standing game such as Destiny. And to be fair, they weren't left with a game that was growing, they inherited a game on it's way down. Drastic times call for drastic measures, but they simply misread the room. If given enough time and resources there is always a chance they could revive the game and it's player base but it's touch and go at this point.

1 ReplyYou do realize that was an entirely different team back then? Did someone initially pitch the Portal concept back then? Maybe. But don't go confusing the people who had the final say when it came to D1 with those pulling the strings behind the current state of D2. Especially when the only source we have to go off of is Lucky, a Destinytuber whose entire content nowadays is just reactions to make everything seem like a big deal no matter how minute. I dare you to find one of his videos from the past year that doesn't start with him saying "this is wild/crazy/insane."

2 RepliesAnd yet this will still not convince some people that the introduction, or rather reintroduction, of the portal was a big reason why people didn't stick with Bungie when they dropped info on EoF. Sure, we knew people were jumping ship after TFS, that was inevitable. However, the ones who were gonna stick it out and see what the next saga would hold definitely jumped when they showcased the portal.

I couldn't help but notice, that the new expansion is almost an in your face advertisment for Marathon as well, with the new lawless frontier steal loot, then exfiltrate system, and they made us pay for it, you're not a guardian protecting humanity anymore, and fighting aliens to safeguard them, no, we have been reduced to powerful immortal thugs, with an appetite for the things of others, and the rule of law and society has completely broken down, I do realize that this is post collapse events, then golden age, etc., but still.. It's like Bungie is saying: this is what we are doing now. They didn't even fully capitalize on the star wars collaboration as much as they could've done, the story narration, plot, events, and direction, had more holes in them than Swiss cheese, barely a finished product Maybe it needed more cooking time in the masterworked oven, I would have waited for a better expansion

14 RepliesIt’d make sense they want the PvP players to switch to Marathon, but I don’t see the PvE focussed players wanting to switch to a PvP focussed extraction game. It doesn’t make sense to do that by deliberately making bad choices for Destiny. They risk losing players and money before the new game is even out.

Its an interesting speculation but don't go down the paranoid hole too far... ...imo from my experience in business its more like > "Hey what activity do we do... well we have some experience with extraction now... lets consider that for the seasonal activity... oh and we can justify to leadership its a good idea > that it kinda lets players see how they feel about extraction for the other game so its a win-win" ...way more innocent but that can easily be misread by players who go down that rabbit hole... I absolutely agree and spoke about it before that you lose that sense of immersion without the director... thats almost like us being uploaded into the guardian's body and saying ok.. time to go somewhere... but I also think a button to pull up a better portal can totally be done well from the guardian's perspective... ...today its organized a bit too much from a developers point of view... and not the fantasy guardian players point of view... you kinda need that tyrannical crazy vision & passion to lead technical people away from creating lifeless efficiency... ...all in all we don't know the details on cost of things that could lead to certain choices that perhaps they know is not the best.. but will do for now >> still having a blast playing and I like that the future is a mystery.. just be on your tippy toes -

People have donated to streamers for emblems or whatever in the past. I think it’s similar to that. It’s basically trying to milk a susceptible part of the playerbase right to the end. -
If D1 had a portal I promise you the game would have been even more popular. You're telling me I could have done nightfalls and made it so solar damage was increased AND heavy was increased? Oh yeah, that sounds horrible...

1 ReplyMost preorders for a company with live service games offer things for their other games, take diablo 4 for example when you pre order they give you stuff in wow, hearthstone, and when heroes of the storm was big that also. Its common practice. Bungie themselves said marathon wasn't for current destiny players, and im pretty sure that was the general sentiment.

1 ReplyI think if I had a pre-existing game I would advertise my new game to my pre-existing customers. Some people will pick it up and enjoy it. Ultimately Destiny is over for a lot more reasons than Marathon. People who have been playing Destiny for the past decade need to just accept it's almost over. Nothing is going to last forever.
