Your proposed "legendaries will be shelved" idea is one of your worst "solutions" to date

"The simplest version of how it is going to work is: Legendary weapons will have fixed values for how high they can be infused. Those values will project the weapon’s viable-in-end-game lifespan and we think that lifespan is somewhere between 9 and 15 months." https://www.bungie.net/en/Explore/Detail/News/48758 - This game is about loot for many of us, first and foremost. We spend our time chasing specific weapons and rolls that will suit our playstyles, things that will make the game enjoyable for US to play. Many of us don't even chase meta weapons and perks, but more specific things that suit our specific playstyles. We spend a LOT of time chasing things and refining loadouts to find styles of play that WE enjoy. And yes, I get that the paragraphs above the one I quoted specifically talk about the desire to create powerful weapons that won't create issues in future, but your overall point seems to be referring to ALL legendary weapons. How about, instead, you create a third class of weapons that are time specific. Specific legendary weapons that people know will be finite that you can make powerful and interesting without concern for the future. Leave the things we have now alone, we earnt them, we enjoy them. Rebalance them so weapons below can have more room if you have to but so at least they're still viable and not just taken from us. If I'm wrong about the overall idea of this applying to all legendary weapons, and if you mean this specifically for a certain TYPE of legendary weapons like "pinnacles then fine, but if you mean to lockout any of the stuff we've already earned... there has to be a better solution. - This is from another forum where a poster responded to this idea: "It's weird; in the same article he talked about understanding how weapons in games often feel like an extension of you...his big idea is to add expiration dates to weapons you have found to be an extension of you. I understand it may be a bit of an inconvenience for the balance team to have to worry about old weapons. I understand old weapons can still be used in PvP and such. That's not my problem. Let me use what I feel like I can perform best with in content where it really matters, you know?" And I fully agree. - Also, the post itself in the link is quite unfocused and unclear. If they mean locking out all legendaries after a time, even random rolls, then "that lifespan is somewhere between 9 and 15 months" isn't even true. What if I only get the roll Iv'e been chasing with a month or even a week left? Unless they hand out this stuff right away or are only talking about weapons tied to quests that are very quick to obtain, this "9-15 months" doesn't seem like a realistic idea.

    • “Play how bungie wants” is what they should have said. We are so far from “play how you want” I don’t think there is a turning back. Nice work with the recycled next season. What a joke.

Honestly if weapons I farmed for aren't able to be used I quit destiny. I've been stacking God rolls in hopes of trials. I have an arsenal in my vault. I worked hard for it. If that all became pointless then so is trials and destiny.

            • Its rather simple. Luke smith is and has been the worst enemy of Destiny. He is responsible for failure after failure after failure. How a writer from a subpar gaming site became a game director is beyond me.

              • More whining from clowns who cant comprehend how good this is. Your weapons are being retired, slowly and in small quantities with a life span of 15 months, the number 1 complaint you morons had this season was that theres no reason to chase anything because you already have god rolls and god tier weapons, you wouldn't put down your recluses, mountaintops, wendigos, izanagis, etc if they would continue to be relevant in endgame content which is the only part of the game where they wont be effective, you can use them literally everywhere else except for new raids and 980 nightfalls, not to mention luke already stated that this will help them get rid of power creep in addition to them being able to make more powerful, potent, unique, and useful weapons in the future due to them having a lifespan that's long enough to where anybody should want to use new weapons. They aren't ripping these weapons from your hands, they'll be effective in literally 99% of all content except new raids and 980 nightfall, nobody cares about your illogical whining

                  • It seems more of a way for Bungie to minimize cost and maximize profit. There are numerous other ways to slow power creeps (remove power levels from weapons and make the weapon damage be calculated from character attributes and character levels, do a level squash, reset power levels each season, reset weapon levels each season,to name a few ) and seeing that other power creeping mechanics are still in the game like light levels, armor power levels and artifact power levels, power creeping will happen, even if they cap old legendaries powerlevel. With that in mind, its a futile effort in that aspect, but its a very lucrative way to minimizing production costs, since they can take all weapons created since release and reintroduce them into the game with minor tweaks every now and then, instead of having to design new weapons for each type, they can now design 2 or 3 new ones for each season and then use old weapons to fill the rest of the weapontypes. By reintroducing weapons, they can also create and sell ornaments for them, because even though the weapons will expire, they wont go away and will probably be reintroduced later, making it more legit to sell ornaments for them. So even though I do not like or want the change, I applaud Bungie for the cost/profit maneuvre they just made and they even have Youtubers/Streamers singing their praize for it, not realizing it wasnt for the players but for the company this change was made. Best wishes Storm

                  • It is a little late in d2's lifecycle to finally decide what it is supposed to be. It was a collection game, and they are changing it to a loot and make loot worthless game.

Ok so I’m fixing to shut down everyone who has said this is a bad thing and says it has wasted our time real quick. Listen this has already happened before. For anyone who doesn’t know this happened in Destiny 1 after the Taken King dropped. There were people complaining and people upset. But you know what? It wasn’t that bad. We found new weapons to use and found fun new ways to use our old guns in different activities. Its the same freaking thing. So its not new, and certainly not something people have not experienced before. So relax and have fun with the guns we have now. It wont be bad i promise Edit: Love the discussion people! Liking how this is going. Please give your thoughts and opinions on it

                    • I'm just here to say that they can go ahead and take my Bygones. They've proven that they actually do listen and have someone in the building that plays the game they create. They can have it. I'm sure I have more Crucible kills on it than the kills on any 3 guns you have put together. If they can show that they listen and actually play the game then I'm on board. You should be too.

                    • You’re wrong. Sorry to put it like that but it’s a fact. The game you describe is the one that the previous 30mln players wanted. Bungie delivered another game. One that has now 1mln peak players. More generally a core of 250k players worldwide playing everyday all day. Bungie is making the game so they don’t lose these since they can’t regain any of the 29mln.

                    • Considering basically every loot game to date has done this, I think you'll survive. Or they. Whichever.

                        • Newsflash: They have already done it a couple of times... Seriously, who's using D2Y1 guns anymore? Barring a few exceptions maybe. They're not bad per se... but they have one perk slot less. While I'm not sure this is the best solution, I do recognize the problem: They need to keep people yearning for more loot -- but they can't just keep making guns better and better. IMHO Light level has _always_ been the lazy solution. They're trying too hard to emulate MMO systems.
