Your proposed "legendaries will be shelved" idea is one of your worst "solutions" to date

"The simplest version of how it is going to work is: Legendary weapons will have fixed values for how high they can be infused. Those values will project the weapon’s viable-in-end-game lifespan and we think that lifespan is somewhere between 9 and 15 months." https://www.bungie.net/en/Explore/Detail/News/48758 - This game is about loot for many of us, first and foremost. We spend our time chasing specific weapons and rolls that will suit our playstyles, things that will make the game enjoyable for US to play. Many of us don't even chase meta weapons and perks, but more specific things that suit our specific playstyles. We spend a LOT of time chasing things and refining loadouts to find styles of play that WE enjoy. And yes, I get that the paragraphs above the one I quoted specifically talk about the desire to create powerful weapons that won't create issues in future, but your overall point seems to be referring to ALL legendary weapons. How about, instead, you create a third class of weapons that are time specific. Specific legendary weapons that people know will be finite that you can make powerful and interesting without concern for the future. Leave the things we have now alone, we earnt them, we enjoy them. Rebalance them so weapons below can have more room if you have to but so at least they're still viable and not just taken from us. If I'm wrong about the overall idea of this applying to all legendary weapons, and if you mean this specifically for a certain TYPE of legendary weapons like "pinnacles then fine, but if you mean to lockout any of the stuff we've already earned... there has to be a better solution. - This is from another forum where a poster responded to this idea: "It's weird; in the same article he talked about understanding how weapons in games often feel like an extension of you...his big idea is to add expiration dates to weapons you have found to be an extension of you. I understand it may be a bit of an inconvenience for the balance team to have to worry about old weapons. I understand old weapons can still be used in PvP and such. That's not my problem. Let me use what I feel like I can perform best with in content where it really matters, you know?" And I fully agree. - Also, the post itself in the link is quite unfocused and unclear. If they mean locking out all legendaries after a time, even random rolls, then "that lifespan is somewhere between 9 and 15 months" isn't even true. What if I only get the roll Iv'e been chasing with a month or even a week left? Unless they hand out this stuff right away or are only talking about weapons tied to quests that are very quick to obtain, this "9-15 months" doesn't seem like a realistic idea.

  • Why is retiring old gear even necessary when Bungie can just cap them below the season's soft cap to remediate power creep? I floated the idea here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/255340112?page=0&sort=0&showBanned=0&path=1 TL;DR -- Bungie can cap legacy weapons by a fixed amount below the season soft cap so that they are always weaker than current season gear, but still somewhat usable for those who want to keep using their sentimental favorites. This season's soft cap is 960. Under this proposed change, older legacy weapons can be infused only up to 950 or less (exact values TBD by Bungie). This means the current season gear will always enjoy a +10 or more light advantage over older gear. Tada -- problem solved, without flushing all legacy gear down the drain.

    • I’ve also got thoughts on the subject that I hope are both critical and passionate, if anyone’s interested! Would folks like to give some feedback and drum up another detailed discussion? The more threads the better! https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/255344147 Or would it be better if I just reposted my thoughts in this thread, instead of linking to another...? I’m actually not too sure if there’s a particular etiquette around that.

        • Great feedback. It is a bad change for us players that have a limited time to play.

          • They tried this game garbage in D1 and ended up bringing back all the old stuff later for us to re-grind (ldr, longbow, raids, hopscotch, etc) It's one of thier worst philosophies and is purely done to force player to use the latest items because they cant be bothered to make the latest items any good so theyd be used on thier own. Why the hell bungie think it's so bad for players to use what THEY choose to is beyond me.

              • When will these weapons be retired? That will be the day I “shelve” the game.

              • Bungie was so quick to respond to the Artifact in PvP but there's zero comments about the weapon retirement thing. It makes you wonder.

                • I thought the whole point of introducing new mods that only existed on new guns was to make them better and build gear that only worked with them, but apparently not? What was the whole point? THey gave themselves every oportunity to make sure that there wasnt any power creep from the beginning while giving players the sense of at least becoming more powerfull in a PVE world, but they CONSTNATLY redacted that by readjusting light level balancing in the world, weapons, and gear, to make you weaker every consecutive year.

                • So I have an idea. What if pinnacle weapons become a new sub class of weapons. People who have earned them can keep and upgrade them to the new seasons soft cap. But, for endgame content to keep progressing past the soft cap you have to use the new legendary weapons with each new season. Rotate the pinnacle quests between coming seasons (or bi-seasonally) to avoid FOMO. Remove the least used legendary weapons as seasons continue. Also bring back pinnacle drops of +1 light back to weekly challenges and trials bounties to keep both PVE players and PVP players interested. Even if you can only use this to progress half way to the hard cap. Even if it's gritting your teeth and doing activities you may not enjoy your still moving forward.

                  • What I don’t get is that they said that there’s too much FOMO but then they say they’re going to introduce a system that adds more? Every time I think the game can’t get any more rigid, they find a way to do it.

                  • I don’t know what Bungie’s on about. I’m still adding new weapons to my arsenal. I don’t appreciate expiration dates, but I’m not quite opposed to having some sort of rotation. The problem is they haven’t had that system this entire game. It’s a status quo change for Destiny 2. Therefore it’s massively disruptive

                      • That’s why I’m glad my favorite weapon is an exotic! But in reality, I’m gonna be quite depressed when my Patron god roll and my Blast Furnace aren’t gonna be infusable anymore. I may be wrong but won’t this lead to a general consensus of: “why would I grind for a god roll if I won’t be able to use it next season?” If people can’t bring forward they’re favorite guns I see that as a huge morale blow.

                        • I'd rather they remove my stuff at this point... Just remove luna from the game I'm never gonna use it now its a 150... And I don't infuse anyway so this dosent really effect me.

                        • If you want to prevent those changes from happening, don’t play! At least for a month, if everyone who left a comment here stops playing they will have to do sonething about this! Gather your will and don’t play, if you do nothing now it will be much worse later. You can ask, “why do you bother you said you quit”, yes I did but I still have hope that these changes don’t happen or they redo everything and I’m going to play again. On the other hand who am I trying to fool here, 3 players including me will stop playing, everyone else will probably swallow it and become a wheelhamster.
