I've always wondered why they say it if it's a derogatory term? Never understood. Can someone explain?

1 ReplyIt became a derogatory term in the 1950s for somewhat artificial reasons. Basically it became an easy proxy for deeper attitudes. Complaining about it was really a complaint about overall treatment and attitudes. This caused it to become taboo suddenly, and taboos are enforced harshly, not with patient explanation. The rule became "don't say it!" and if you broke the rule, that meant you were trying to offend people. The word has a long history in both black and white culture and continued being used in that same way among black people, who felt less pressure to avoid it. Black use of the word is nothing new (you can find black blues songs from the 1930s that use it the same way), and is probably not usually done to push social limits.

Double standards.

It's really the context that it's used. I'm white as -blam!- and I say it to my black friends, they say it to me. Everyone laughs and gets along.

1 ReplyEdited by ASyrianRefugee: 2/20/2016 9:56:31 PMIts funny because most young white people say it because they hear it in rap and they think its cool or edgy. So basically if black people didnt say it then the word would hardly ever be used. But then I guess they would have one less thing to complain about which they wouldnt like that
-
It's only used between friends. So there is no problem.

5 RepliesEdited by Tomnipotent: 2/21/2016 2:24:38 AMIt's a casual term of endearment from one black person to another. Made by black people for black people. What i personally never understood is why other races are so intrigued by it and wanna say it so badly. If a bunch of mexicans were calling each other spics and that was just how it was in THEIR culture then cool, i have absolutely no interest in using the word myself cus well... that just isnt me. I dont call people wankers cus im American, not British, that is not my culture, id feel fake walking around acting like im British when im not. If two spanish dudes were calling each other "puutas" im not gonna just walk into the convo and be like WADDUP PUUTAS?? ..thats so disrespectful. So why the hell do some non blacks wanna say the n word so bad? Thats one thing i never understood. You're not black. I mean at the end of the day you are free to say what ever you wanna say, just know there could be consequences if used in the wrong place at the wrong time.

the one ending in -a can be used as like a friendly thing or aggressive thing. all depends on how they say it. the one ending in -er tho is for straight up racists and no black people say that one (generally).

2 RepliesWell N1gger is actually a term used to define someone as lazy or unwilling to do work, it has just somehow been turned around to be a racist term for black people. Please correct me if I'm wrong
-
I don't see how it can be taken back and meant for something good when it means something bad when any other race uses it. The smart thing to do for the word to be taken outta society is just stop using it and let the word fade out and only be left in the history books. Unfortunately it takes decent folk to get that idea and most who use the word isn't that type, white or black.

Edited by Yarbey: 2/21/2016 6:43:26 AMGoogle black people vs Said word. A lot of people have some interesting thoughts on it
-
2 RepliesIt's an attempt to take the word back. The idea is that if it's used as a term of endearment that it's now unacceptable to use it for any reason other than that. White people dont understand because there is no word that's even close to as offensive.

It's not about the word itself it's the way you say it. Basically a mini generalization a way of saying brothers in struggle among black people(not that others don't struggle) and to answer why it's a problem when white people say it in the same way and in a non-derogatory way generally some people look at white people having not struggled since they are white. I don't subscribe to that specific philosophy though all my friends that are close to me use it on occasion regardless of race.

1 ReplyIt's nothing more than a great way to stay in a victim mentality. Blacks who throw that word around are a bunch of losers. Luckily, I know lots of black people who never utter that stupid word, because they are educated and self-made.
-
6 RepliesIt is reclaimed, meaning it was an offensive term, but can now be used by the victims to refer to another member of the group. It's kinda like "b*tch" for women or "queer" for someone who is not straight.
-
7 RepliesWhy are white people so fascinated by this?
-
3 RepliesBecause blacks love to be victims
