Are we paying for temporary content?

One thing I was curious about if, since nobody has bothered bringing it up... is this burning question : "Am I paying for rented/temporary content?" Whenever the Dark Below DLC was released, all of the vendors changed over to different gear. The core experience was changed in the sense that patrol missions suddenly had large and powerful Hive enemies wandering about, and that last generation of equipment was now impossible to obtain. The same thing occurred with the House of Wolves. The last generation of Crucible/Vanguard equipment was now unobtainable if you didn't have it already, and all of those Blades of Crota in the world were replaced by roving gangs of Wolf Fallen. I have essentially been paying 20 bucks a pop for content that is pretty much a "rental", in the sense that I cannot go back and reacquire a majority of the equipment despite having already paid for it. My old guns clutter my vault because I do not wish to get rid of them also on account of the superiority of the perks/upgrades of some older guns (ex. if you don't have a sniper with Final Round, or a Full-Auto legendary pulse rifle, you have missed that opportunity forever) ... But I digress. My point is: what is the point of continuing to spend money on these DLC if I am NOT going to have the availability to play certain aspects of the content when I want to? I can't roam the countryside doing Blade bounties for Eris Morn... The same way I doubt I'm going to be able to continue to hunt Wolves for Petra in a couple of months once it's "Goodbye, Wolves... hello Taken!" roaming the countrysides of the patrol missions. This is compounded when you realize that allegedly the Year One weapons aren't going to be upgradeable to Year Two levels of damage output, essentially meaning that we've paid for content that is further rendered obsolete. It effectively invalidates player progress. Why should I purchase even more temporary content? I feel like this is a shitty business tactic that nobody is even bothering to touch base on. Thank you for reading if you took the time to do so.

  • Looks like the content just got even more temporary, with rumors of year 1 gear not being able to get ascended with TTK.

Oh, I didn't think of the wanted bounties...how will a new player rank up Queens Wrath for the shaders and ship? Eris still has relevant bounties, even the Blades of Crota one. Petra's are all public event type bounties. Unless they decide to keep the Wolves that walk around all the time.

  • Their point of the dlc is that the world/universe is changing. The blades dont wander around because we've killed crota and stopped all that stuff. The wolves wont come because we stopped Skolas and all that bs. I can see your point about it sucking but to me thats only if you havent played the content before and you are missing out somewhat (which bungie stated). We have played through it and thats what you paid for, and in theory enjoyed doing. This is why TTK has dlc attached and so cheap (your missing out on world happening events). Like myself and most people we wanna see different stuff and a chaging world ... even more changing then now. All my opinion and can see both sides of arguement.

  • They should make it so when the pack of wolves come, so does the blade of crota, like when it says "the enemies come together" or whatever it says, I forgot, but anyway you get the idea, I think it would be good to have them both happen at the same time, why not try killing urzok the hated with a scorch cannon? Or vice versa with the wolves and the blade of crota

  • U can still do the old raids and obtain all the old weapons and armor. The old vanguard weapons drop in certain strike play lists. A Blade of crota is still available in the first dark below mission.

    • Dudes got a point, those original and TDB weapons and armor should be available without having to grind strikes. On the other hand though... Bungie has and does advertise Destiny as an ever changing, evolving world. So I can see a good point on both ends of the spectrum.

      • So the fact that blades of Crota no longer roam the earth is kind of saddening, but you didn't pay for that content and you didn't pay for new vanguard weapons and armor. All of the things you are labeling as temporary came to all players regardless of the purchasing of the dlc. What you paid for (story missions, quests, strikes, raid, access to Eros morn and her goodies) are all still available and still exclusive to those who purchased the dlc
with the exception of TDB crucible maps, which can now be accessed by all.
• You should only pay for it if it brings you entertainment and fun. If you don't think it will, spend that money elsewhere.

So the thing as an Xbox player that I am most fearful for with the new dlc is the exclusive exotics that we can now finally get will be pointless before we even get them if they don't allow us to raise the damage caps on year 1 stuff. And honestly this is why a year of exclusive content on any platform is kinda bullshit at least cap it at say a few months because if I get say the Hawkmoon and it can only ever go to 365 then what is the point of using it outside of say standard PvP where damage numbers don't ultimately count?

            • Actually, that stuff you mentioned is available to everybody, regardless of whether or not they bought the dlc. The expansions give you exclusive legendaries, exotics, raid/arena, strikes, and early access to pvp levels. But the stuff you mentioned is for everybody.

            • Yeah and I can't believe they took the blades out of patrol. They need more going on in patrols anyways. I still need the husk and it would be nice to stumble on those events every now and then....

I kinda agree to some extent. For Vanilla and TDB it's not so much of a problem because you can still do everything, even if kill blades you are forced to re-run that 1 mission (maybe this should be extended to Yellow bar melee knights in CE) For HoW you are onto a major problem - If they take the wolf packs out of patrol then anyone who buys TTK as their introduction to Destiny is going to have massive limitations - all the Grimoire for the Hunted: GONE, levelling Petra Venj for ship, shaders & Vestian Dynasty: GONE. The best way I can see for them to fix this is to introduce "Legacy Patrol" modes where you launch and all the game rules and spawns are reset to be in line with a certain "era" of Destiny. This way you can play in communal areas that are relevant to the content you are working on. However I don't agree for weapons and kit. Remember old kit has old perks and cannot be reforged, we had to grind out our drops and make do with what we got. In a way I think that this was actually better than grinding for god rolls. However I think you aren't missing out on any capabilities now apart from ones that the community has deemed to be "OP". Soon enough even those OP old perks might have to be dropped in favour of even more new weapons and armour - veterans are going to have to move on too, and new kit is always more powerful at least in some respect.

              • Most mmo you cant take weapons from dlc to dlc because they get outclassed. A game similar to destiny is borderlands when a vault hunter upgrade came out all weapons were made obselete and you had to earn better gear ie pearlescents or op 8 weapons. All constant online games do this its just something you have to deal with sure save a few special ones to show off but isnt that a good thing to bring out a vanilla game item and be like look what I have and you cant get meaning as in vanilla weapons. You can also go back to vanguard tiger and get armor engrams which if yur lucky enough can turn into a legendary and it will be q vanilla destiny piece of gear so ultimately you can get og armor. Also you can still get dark below weapons you know when you beat missions in the dark below engrams if your lucky and the blues turn into legendaries ypu can get dark below gear. I started a new warlock a couple of days ago and I did the urn of sacrifice got 2 blue weapon engrams. One turned into the badger ccl bad rolls so I dismantled but its still possible to get the items just a little difficult.

              • If I can't upgrade to year 2 I will be done with destiny. I know gear changes and new stuff usually becomes obsolete but I refuse to spend months grinding to get exotics ( working on thorn bounty and bad juju right now) just to have to do it all over again for new weapons that will become useless in the next dlcs. It's a fun game but I agree I feel like I pay 20 bucks for new gear and like 5 missions only to find out they won't be any good in a few months. It's not worth it. So in conclusion this is your last chance bungie

                    • This is normal practice in MMOs to the best of my knowledge, so i dont see too much of an issue with regards to weapons. However, I do think the Public Events not spawning for the respective DLCs is garbage. Don't see why the Blades cant/shouldn't spawn on the Moon, and Wolves on Earth (with some modifications because of the location based bounties).

                    • The meta for the game HAS to change or people will leave. The "story" is progressing and the game is progressing. The older content is still available to some degree but shouldn't hinder the progress of the story.

                    •
wall of useless text
Here's the answers to life's problems. Play the vanguard tiger and roc strikes. Get vanilla and tdb gear respectively. Also, nothing has been confirmed that i know of. Lots of people say it, yet has no source. Those are called rumors.

                    • Content that's a rental just because the vendors change stock? LOL wow Missions are still there, raids are still there, all the content is there only a few things go missing. I feel your pain, really wished I'd gotten a decent longbow synthesis, but with limited vault space who knows if I'd even be using it come September
