Oh, so you're a coder?

Edit: almost 1000 replies, thank you everyone for being vocal on this matter. Even if you think it's easy and you are a screamer, your replies keep bumping. It's something that needs to be discussed for sure! Seriously, reading all the replies to the weekly update and to Deej's comment just pissed me off. 99.9% of this community has no idea how to code and design a video game, so why does everyone insist it is so damn easy to just add some vault space or add matchmaking? I can guarantee if it was is Bungie would have done it. Why the hell would they not do it? To be jerks? No. So unless you have a college degree in video game design or have spoken to someone who does ... Shut.. The.. Hell... Up. Before anyone doubts my opinions, a close family friend (pseudo uncle of mine) is a designer for Ubisoft and worked on all of the Assassin's Creed games. He has given me and my brother insight into how hard the coding guys have it. Edit: wake up to over 600 replies.. Well done guys. And yes, AC games suck now, I know that, he knows that. He is a landscape and city designer... So he makes all the breathtaking landscapes and badass city layouts.. Pretty sure no one can argue that those suck. He has stated how disappointed he is in where the games have gone. He also likes having a job. Edit: HEY EVERYONE! How would you like it if they rushed the vault expansion, released it, then found out once maxed the vault somehow deletes the entire vault? Would you be happy? No. Let them get all the testing and stuff done.

Make the game free and that takes away everyone's right to complain. No surprise, the game wasn't free. Therefore, we as customers have the right to complain whether you agree with it or not. I don't have to be a coder, all i need to do is invest in their product. Gaming is no different then any other product sold, and the arrogance to suggest otherwise is a waste of time and energy.

  • You do realize Bungie has 200 employees right? And a supposed $500 million dollar budget? Coding is hard, but it's not that da** hard. Huge fixes, yes, but minor fixes like more vault space, no.

I am a coder as a facet of my career. Along with it infrastructure and network design. Unless the bug can be reproduced with regularity, tracking down a cause and fix is incredibly difficult. But when your community is little more than poor Veruca Salts, patience is not available. If these pudgy dough boy want to help, isolate a way in which you can have the heavy ammo glitch occur with regularity. Or just delete and roll another toon so you can round out your hm Crota raids to 100.

      • So if I spend 500 million dollars to design a maze and a few thousand people are asking me to clean up a pile of poop inside it's ok if I get lost trying to find the poop? Your logic is flawed, coder or not.
shouldn't get lost in your own maze...
• You do know they could add in the vault space whenever they want, right? C'mon they've been working on it since December. They've probably just finished up and are going to release it as part of the pre house of wolves update to compensate for the new exotics coming with that expansion.

It's funny how people who have never slung code I'm their life think nits an easy fix, yet fail to realize while the fix itself is technically easy, the fallout can be disatrous. Even with code as simple as Visual Basic, a simple "if then" statement added in can throw off hundreds of lines of code. Do we really want heavy ammo fixed at the cost of some horrible occurence? Hey I got to keep my heavy ammo, too bad my inventory is empty. My raid boots vanished, or lord knows what else.

              • This is seriously just the worst argument I may have seen on the forums. Mostly because I feel you are an intelligent person seeing as how your writing was neat and clean and didn't go on some needless tangent. Yet you seem to be looking at this from a slight biased point of view. I do not know how to code anymore than the most basic website so I do not have extensive knowledge on the subject matter. But that is completely irrelevant. I am a paying consumer and as such I no more allow the excuse "but coding is really difficult" than I would in any other profession. At the end of the day, it is their job. Would you use the same excuse to any other professional? A few hypotheticals to illustrate my point: 1. You have an accountant who does your taxes. He files your taxes incorrectly and now you either owe more or are not going to receive the tax return you are entitled. Or even worse, they were filed so incorrectly that you are now being investigated for tax fraud. Do you give your accountant a pass and say "well tax laws are complicated and he had a lot of clients so it was really hard for him"? I would think surely not. 2. You have a package that must be delivered by a certain date and send it via FedEx with more than enough time to be delivered by that date. Do you let that slide because "they ship so many packages each day that it must be hard to keep track of each one"? Surely not. 3. You pay for a cell phone and service and randomly your phone will not make calls for a week because their cell tower nearest you is out. Do you not complain about it because of the difficulty of fixing the cell tower and how hard it must be to accurate send signals all over the world via satellite? Once again, surely not. In any of those situations you do not give a professional a free pass because their job is difficult. And it does not take inside knowledge of the intricacies of the work for you to demand someone you are paying to get the job done. Anyways. Rant over.

                • Having a history in software development of 20 years (more QA than deveolopment but still with several years of development ) is enough to know. The only huge difference is how the graphics load into the video card. I know how hard it is to change a system which is already working just fine. I know how instability can happen. I suspect that the reason why vault space is so hard is that each item has a lot of attributes and takes up a lot of relative table space. Item count it what kills video games. But I don't need video game coding experience to know that.

                • Honestly you are comparing two different things. People that have a degree in game design aren't as well versed in the programming world as those that get a degree in computer science. A game design degree offers more of a wide range of concepts such as what makes something a game, how to set up a story for a game, and other concepts that have nothing to do with computer programming, where as computer science degree focuses more on programming, math/efficiency, and theory.

                • *Makes 500 million dollars in the first week of launch* *continually making money everyday from DLC purchases ($20. $40 for the season pass)* Let's say ten people buy destiny, and purchase the season pass (which I feel like most of us did) that's $900 off of ten people. Out of the supposed MILLIONS that play Destiny. NOT counting those who bought special editions as well. So you're going to sit there with that continuous flow of that high amount of money, they can't afford a dev team that actually knows what they're doing ? It takes them almost 6 months to actual give us some real info on this bug ? ONE bug. (Still no words on the glitches in CE AND VoG) This is what Activision does. I believe like many others do, they have the biggest role in this situation. This is what they do. They probably pay the dev team the lowest amount they can for their experience and turn the game into a bunch of DLC's to be spanned out for 10 years. This is a game they know they could milk money out of and they took advantage of the opportunity. Which was a pretty damn good business decision for them. I'll give them that. But it's at the cost of video gamers. Video games were meant to relax people, not add all this unneeded stress and turmoil between people. Some of you will defend anything. It blows my mind how much slack you'll give a gaming company, but absolutely roast the living fućk out of fellow players over the dumbest shit. You scream out entitlement when someone wants something to be better. It kills me to see how much real world oppression even affects those in a gaming community. You use it against other players when they want something different than you, you go off on people you've never met in your life. Stop acting so careless and reckless over video games. I'm not necessarily trying to bash you or anyone else, but stop with the oppressive bullshit state of mind. Look at it this way. You're an investor. You buy a lot of stock in a company. Let's says that company had huge hype while it was a start up company. Well turns out they're pushing out bad products and not communicating with investors as to what they're doing with the products to try and make them better. They just keep telling them they're working out it. Every week. Being extremely vague and bland. That is exactly what's happening right now. Except we're not necessarily investing a whole lot.

This is what I've been thinking of saying, but haven't got around to it. As someone that does program/code for a living (some of which is bug squashing existing code), the ignorance on these forums with this given issue is beyond comprehension. The weekly update was extremely candid and open about what the issue is, and what has made it so hard to fix. It seems the biggest complainers are the ones that don't understand and don't care to understand, because, well, ignorance truly is bliss. I just can't wait until they announce how the fix is being applied (it seems it's not just going to be a fix, there will be a "gotcha" to it), because then the community will go bananas at the change.

                  • Graduate computer science student here. All I see is that they didn't make their code extendable from the get go. I couldn't tell how long it would take to fix because they obviously wouldn't let us look at it. What I think happened is that they did not suspect having to make changes after the fact and they must have hard coded in a lot of things. The problem now is that they don't want to spend a lot of money now to fix trivial things all over the place. Kinda like how adobe keeps putting band aids on flash when in really needs to recode the whole thing.

Was waiting for the usual "I KNOW A GUY WHO IS A PROGRAMMER SO I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT" line. Never fails to make me chuckle. Some of the fixes will of course take time yes. Everyone knows that. But some of the problems have been around since launch so there is no excuse. Others are easy quick fixes such as vault space or better drop rates. Bungie is dragging their feet and its pathetic.

                    • I actually know two programmers and they have said that adding something like vault space would not be nearly that difficult or time consuming, especially for a team (assuming the coding was done right the first time). I understand that coding is complicated, but there are certain things that actually should have been done before the game was released, it was obvious that this game would be about collecting that rare look (raid gear and exotics), and yet simple math would show that there is not even enough vault space to hold every exotic weapon, along with all the weapons from the first two raids. Seems odd that something like a large vault isnt something they would have realized people would want from the beginning, many gamers like collecting unique and rare stuff just for thw hell of it, look at any rpg like skyrim, or look at borderlands, they even knew that people would want a vault for their cool guns.
