Look, I get it. Icebreaker, along with Gjallarhorn is one of the most hyped weapons in the game. And rightly so. The thing is a beast. And I get that you're super stoked you finally got it from Xûr. It's happy days. However, much as you want to play with your new and shiny toy, for an arc nightfall, the thing is not really that much of a beast.
My 331 arc LDR is melting enemies in 1 and 2 shots, while I hear my teammates pew-pewing away with their ineffectual Icebreakers. Heck, even a 300 arc sniper would be better off.
Save it for the solar (or no elemental damage) nightfall.
For those who do not have any arc snipers, who are using the Icebreakers, buy the damn arc LDR from Roni, the Vanguard Quartermaster. What on earth are you waiting for?
Edit: The LDR with Field Scout holds 24 rounds in reserve! That's massive. Your DPS on Phogoth with this thing will outstrip Icebreaker by an order of magnitude. It's not even a contest. If you're using an Icebreaker on Phogoth, you're just spending more time than necessary on that battle.
Note: fixed wrong info about 24 rounds in the magazine. That was a brain fart. It's obviously not 24 rounds in the magazine; it's 24 rounds reserve and 6 in the mag.
Edit 2: Special Ammo is dirt cheap. Stop being a miser, and stock up on some Special Ammo Syntheses. Waiting for Icebreaker to regen your special ammo, then switching between snipers... ugh! Who the hell has time for all this nonsense? Just pop that Ammo Synth!
Edit 3: Whoa! That escalated quickly. What's this about "let me play how I want"? You want to play your own little personal "challenge mode", go ahead and get your own little team together and do that to your heart's content. Everyone else is trying to beast. Nobody wants ineffectual scrubs on their team. Save that for your "Oh see how different I am, I'm so rebel." YouTube bait clips.
Edit 3 Part 2: Also about the cooldown on the Ammo synth - The LDR has 24 rounds. With 1 Ammo synth that's 48 non-critical hits in about 1 minute (the rate of fire and stability on the LDR is brilliant). Each non-critical (on Phogoth) is ~3600. Each critical is ~8500! Even with no crits, if you land every shot, that's 172,800 damage in less than 2 minutes. A team of 3 LDRs will possibly take him down in about 3-4 minutes. Meanwhile Icebreaker is gasping along at ~1200 per non critical (I can't find the actual number for this can someone clarify?), with a piss-poor ~15 shots per minute. And you guys are actually defending this position? "BAH! GURK DO WHAT GURK DO! BAH! GURK NO DO NUMBERS! BAHHHH!!" Gurk's fury dissipates and as he calms down, he hunches over in a defeated slump and whimpers softly, "What is...'number'? Gurk sad because Gurk illiterate and weak." Don't be sad Gurk. Here's a cookie. And an Icebreaker. Go be a star.

I agree. For me I use pradethys timepeice, ldr, and ghorn for majors sheild. Use the right elemental DMG please people.
-
1 ReplyI switched from icebreaker to my patience and time to regen ammo
-
3 RepliesJust use your ice breaker to refill you arc snipers. 6 rounds in icebreaker is 12 rounds in p&t
-
I did the switch thing but I also use fatebringer between the shrieker spawns
-
Not to worry my patience and time is thriving.
-
Wizards.
-
And the LDR shoots through (some) walls!
-
2 RepliesI plan on bringing my not fully upgraded LDR in today. Got sick of using my 270 something P/T (which destroys 331 Icebreaker in damage during Arc btw) in the last nightfall.
-
5 RepliesWizards have solar shields this week ya ass icebreaker takes it down quick then a team mate finishes it off
-
My LDR is solar. When I run out of Gjallahorn ammo and synths I switch to icebreaker
-
Patience and Time worked for me
-
You are correct sir! IB was dealing 1K+ damage versus 3K+ damage from the arc LDR5001, both fully maxed.
-
8 RepliesBut what if you want to cheese phogoth?
-
1 ReplyThe wizards take solar damage. Best to have an array of weapons.
-
I used my arc LDR 5001 until phogath and then once I ran out of sniper ammo I switched to the icebreaker. It only did 1/3 the damage of the LDR but 2x the damage of my fatebringer (though the fatebringer wasn't that leveled) and so I switched back and forth between my fatebringer and IB.
-
I will whenever I feel like getting around to leveling my patience and time. Until then, I'm gonna use whatever gets the job done.
-
I doesn't matter enough to make a stink about it. It's just a 30 strike and quick even without a burn. Arc for Pho, everything else dies too fast to care.
-
I know that's why I switched my Ice breaker for my patience and time. It's a beast :)
-
I use my ice breaker.... To regen ammo then I swap back to pat.

8 RepliesEdited by TheArtist: 1/21/2015 6:29:32 PMWorry about your own game. Not every one has a maxed out arc damage sniper rifle. So in a strike where most of your shielded enemies have SOLAR shields. The Icebreaker is a logical choice. Especially if IT IS maxed. I've run this strike before with Arc Burn....and a maxed out Ice Breaker did more damage to Wizard shields than did my non-maxed Patience and Time. This time around my arc damage specials were maxed...so I ran with them instead.

My fireteam was itching for solar burn on something this week... Only 1 run so far but we went with VOC (solar-shield-be-gone) P&T I went with an arc HMG "The Culling", other 2 had arc rockets Phogoth went down fast, went straight to heroic weekly and did it again even faster. Neither fight lasted long enough to run out of special ammo. Next 2 runs I'll probably stick with VOC but run my arc LDR so I can use Thunderlord - might go with the horn until after the wizard room

3 RepliesPlan C is all you need. P

Edited by Banned n3rd: 1/21/2015 7:39:14 PMThunderlord for the win.

1 ReplyIt's better to use arc against wizard's shields?
-
It takes a while to get all the Marks needed to buy Vanguard weapons. And it requires Rank 3 too, right? Not like players can just walk right over to the vendor and buy a new Sniper this second. Doesn't work that way.

Shhhhhh
