Please stop using Icebreakers on this nightfall.
Look, I get it. Icebreaker, along with Gjallarhorn is one of the most hyped weapons in the game. And rightly so. The thing is a beast. And I get that you're super stoked you finally got it from Xûr. It's happy days. However, much as you want to play with your new and shiny toy, for an arc nightfall, the thing is not really that much of a beast.
My 331 arc LDR is melting enemies in 1 and 2 shots, while I hear my teammates pew-pewing away with their ineffectual Icebreakers. Heck, even a 300 arc sniper would be better off.
Save it for the solar (or no elemental damage) nightfall.
For those who do not have any arc snipers, who are using the Icebreakers, buy the damn arc LDR from Roni, the Vanguard Quartermaster. What on earth are you waiting for?
Edit: The LDR with Field Scout holds 24 rounds in reserve! That's massive. Your DPS on Phogoth with this thing will outstrip Icebreaker by an order of magnitude. It's not even a contest. If you're using an Icebreaker on Phogoth, you're just spending more time than necessary on that battle.
Note: fixed wrong info about 24 rounds in the magazine. That was a brain fart. It's obviously not 24 rounds in the magazine; it's 24 rounds reserve and 6 in the mag.
Edit 2: Special Ammo is dirt cheap. Stop being a miser, and stock up on some Special Ammo Syntheses. Waiting for Icebreaker to regen your special ammo, then switching between snipers... ugh! Who the hell has time for all this nonsense? Just pop that Ammo Synth!
Edit 3: Whoa! That escalated quickly. What's this about "let me play how I want"? You want to play your own little personal "challenge mode", go ahead and get your own little team together and do that to your heart's content. Everyone else is trying to beast. Nobody wants ineffectual scrubs on their team. Save that for your "Oh see how different I am, I'm so rebel." YouTube bait clips.
Edit 3 Part 2: Also about the cooldown on the Ammo synth - The LDR has 24 rounds. With 1 Ammo synth that's 48 non-critical hits in about 1 minute (the rate of fire and stability on the LDR is brilliant). Each non-critical (on Phogoth) is ~3600. Each critical is ~8500! Even with no crits, if you land every shot, that's 172,800 damage in less than 2 minutes. A team of 3 LDRs will possibly take him down in about 3-4 minutes. Meanwhile Icebreaker is gasping along at ~1200 per non critical (I can't find the actual number for this can someone clarify?), with a piss-poor ~15 shots per minute. And you guys are actually defending this position? "BAH! GURK DO WHAT GURK DO! BAH! GURK NO DO NUMBERS! BAHHHH!!" Gurk's fury dissipates and as he calms down, he hunches over in a defeated slump and whimpers softly, "What is...'number'? Gurk sad because Gurk illiterate and weak." Don't be sad Gurk. Here's a cookie. And an Icebreaker. Go be a star.

LDR and murmur does wonders on the nights. My PaT wasn t maxed so I didnt get crazy damage. If you set one guy on wizards then he uses icebreaker or gally

I soloed the nightfall with an icebreaker just fine. I haven't done the weekly yet and just because of this post, I'm going to be sure and use the icebreaker exclusively the entire time.

I equipped the icebreaker until I had all 6 shots, switched to Patience and Time and had 8 bullets. This takes somewhere around half a minute so it saves using a synthesis over and over...

I shall use the ICEBREAKER until it OVERLOADS and EXPLODES in my hands killing all of the known UNIVERSE.

I have both the ice breaker and LDR. Our team used both. We got the job done. If you want to do the nightfall with people that will play with only the weapons you dictate then you'd better specify in your LFG post. Otherwise there's always the option of soloing it.

Edited by Kontii Slyfox: 1/22/2015 8:52:42 PMSame goes for The Gjallahorn. One magazine from the Song of Ir Yut does almost 80k damage to Phogoth. Similar for an arc damage MG18A Harms Way. I know it's hard, but you have to let go of the horn occasionally.

It had its uses in parts but I was mainly using vex for wizards, arc fusion for knight shields and hunger of crota.

The LDR5001 with field scout and that third scope that's all square looking, is my fav, and it's maxed out, so even without arc burn it's doing 250-300 more damage per shot with less recoil since my IB isn't maxed yet I bring both on nightfall and raids

I was using a known horizon and a regular ol' rare machine gun, both with arc damage.

1 ReplyIce breaker works on wizards and is a good way to regen ammo for your P&T if you run out of synthesis or are waiting on the timer.

I used Ice Breaker in the Nightfall to take out any Wizards' shields and my friend finished them off with well-placed headshot using Patience and Time or just demolished them with Light of the Abyss. Ice Breaker had its use in the Strike this week. However that doesn't mean try to kill everything with it when anything arc would do the job a lot better.

I'd only toss mine on for the ammo regen. Flat broke at the moment and spent all my special synths on pocket infinity... No excuses I know but that, iron banner and other upgrades dropped on my lap all at once. Full time Icebreaker on an arc NF is unacceptable though. Everyone should have weapons for each burn.

IB and headshots for solar shields on wizards, P&T for Poogoth. done it three times this week.

I use Icebreaker to regen ammo and then I switch to Patience and Time with six shots in it. I shoot, and repeat.

It's great for the Wizards. Switch between P&T and Ice Breaker and this nightfall is a cake walk.

I used Murmur for knights and Fatebringer for everything else. Oh and a Arc Steel Oraclez for Phoggy lol

I hear you. Any arc weapon is better the ice breaker for this nightfall. I used the LDR and Ghorn for the first room. Ghorn destroyed the wizards and my LDR was two shotting hallowed knights. I did switch Ghorn for an arc Swarm for phogoth so I could use Ice breaker as an ammo synth. 30 seconds and when I switched back to my LDR with field scout I had 12 more rounds to use. Much better then burning one synth every five minutes. Ice breaker is not almighty all of the time, but it is always useful. People need to learn that and take advantage of it. -Nox

2 RepliesNot everyone has a good arc weapon. Do you want me to use an arc murmur on the Wizards? I think that's ignorant. When I ran it two people had arc weapons for the Knights while I took out the wizards. It worked great. As for the boss - we stun locked him with two ice breakers. We did well, so why complain? I was still taking out Knights with a few shots without Arc Burn. And why rank up for vanguard commendations? It's such a waste when you can put all your eggs in one faction and rank them up twice as fast. Once I got to rank 3 I stopped.

Are you insane? Icebreaker is GREAT for the wizards that rush at you; a couple of hits with an IB and then switch to and Arc HMG or my FB and job done. After the wizards though - THEN it is advisable to drop the IB and chuck an Arc Fusion Rifle on instead for uber pew pew lazor DPS on Phogoth :) Three people with Arc Fusion rifles = Phogoth dead before the first wave of adds arrive :)
