Is this what gaming is, now?

So, let me provide a disclaimer before going on a short rant: Destiny is the first FPS I've played since Counter-Strike (yes, I played that in college, in the early 2000's), and the first sort-of MMO I've ever played in my life. I decided to get Destiny mainly for the FPS aspect, not so much the role-playing, leveling-up one. I love this game, though I'm eager for the expansions, and hopefully more beyond that, as the years go by. I just ran across some comments where a player said that it was another player's fault that he didn't have Fatebringer (you know, the Hard Raid gun that still has to be given by RNGesus). This really angered me, but had me thinking about the bigger picture. I've seen a lot of trolling on this forum with players trash-talking others, because they haven't done this, haven't done that, have trouble solo'ing Nightfalls, Heroic strikes, whatever. They haven't maxed out their guns...that's even a point to criticize someone on, apparently. Let me give a few statistics from my profile (obviously you can look this up): The big one, a 0.83 K/D in the Crucible. GUESS WHAT? I don't care! You know why? I have fun playing it. I like playing with a team, and at least getting "important" kills. As for Strikes, I die doing Tiger Strikes sometimes, you know why? I like to run and gun like an idiot, because it's a video game that allows for that. Of course, if it were real life, I wouldn't do that. Nobody would, you'd try to find cover. But there will be people to revive me. And I will do the same for them. I'm 33, I didn't play video games (regularly) for at least 10 or so years, after college, aside from having a PSP to pass the time. I'm an accountant, my girlfriend is getting her PhD in child psychology. We eat healthy, however you want to define that. Basically what I'm trying to get across to some of you is that we actually have lives outside of video games. Video games are fantasy. They're not real. I don't spend hours on end practicing getting the perfect headshot every single time I fire. I DO like getting assists in the Crucible, because I want my team to win. I try to get double-digit assists, actually. Weird, I know. It's like trying to be the John Stockton or Chris Paul of Destiny. Basically, for the trolls, understand that I and others don't play as often as you. We don't CARE about it as much as you, because there are more pressing issues in the real word. I SUCK at Destiny...and I'm ok with that. I have fun doing it. Do you really want to look back, when you're (hopefully) in your 60's, with a destroyed liver and kidneys from chugging Monster to stay up playing these games, and struggle to find some justification for it? To the GREAT players, who also are nice people who understand some players don't put as much time into it, but love to play with them all the same, a HUGE thank you. Out. Edit: Much appreciation for the positive responses, as well as the thought-provoking ones. 2nd Edit: Uh oh...looks like the Hive has struggled to get out of bed, finally... 3rd Edit: It said "Over and out."...but I changed it to just "Out" for the sticklers!!! >:(

  • I just want to say that I love getting assists in the Crucible. And I die in Tiger Strikes as well.

Thanks man, you're totally speaking my mind! I'm forty (you'll get there :), I have a wife, a wonderful 9year old son, a job with some responsibility, a demanding hobby (paragliding). Oh, and an Xbox One ('cause the TV program seems to show total shit on 300+ channels most of the time :). So, casual gaming for me, I guess. Yet I've managed to play Destiny for several hours per day lately. Because it's fun. And I do 'silly' things in patrol mode. Because my son loves our Titan to find new puddles to sit down in. Or to kick the purple ball around at the tower - even for two hours on end. Or to buy and then dismantle blue weapons to find out if the inventory counter for weapon parts can actually show four-figures (it can!). Etc. It's part of our way of having fun, and that's what I understand games are for. I do try my best when playing in (random) teams on strikes. I sometimes die anyway, though, because I zoom in too long and don't see the ambush on the radar. I even accidentially blow myself up sometimes because I throw a grenade at an enemy who is already way too close. Heck, I managed to drive my sparrow over the edge taking an excited left turn when it should have been a right one! So it's ok when my matchmade mates laugh at me, because I do suck at Destiny compared to them. But it's nice if they revive me anyway instead of shooting at my head for 30 seconds once the mission has been accomplished.

  • For a lot of people, video games are still part of real life, whether the stories and characters in them be works of fiction or not, the interactions with other players, the choices you make, the performances you do, those are still real things that really happened, regardless of whether or not they are just coding at the end of the day, those are experiences that you chose to spend your time on, please don't sully those experiences by undermining an activity that millions of people take very seriously and are very passionate about, because even for you, you chose to play the game, you probably enjoyed the experience and had fun, maybe relaxed, maybe got on the edge of your seat, but you chose to play the game for a reason, whatever that may be. That being said, I fully support your sentiment that this community should be nicer to one another and not dwell on each other's performances or lack thereof. We all have our reasons for playing these games, some of us need an escape from the crisis of real life, some of us need to vent our anger and frustrations, some of us just need to unwind from the stress of our lives, some of us just want to have fun and play a game, some of us want to actively test their skills and reflexes against their peers, point is that, there is no right or wrong way to play or experience a videogame. Nobody should be able to make you feel guilt or regret about how you play or the way you play. You played. That's what matters. Let's all just enjoy ourselves, right?

        • Thank you! Maturity, glad to see it exists:) I would like to add something. I played iron banner last night after I got home, ate dinner with my wife and child, and changed a diaper. The very first game I played with 3 of my buddies, and we got demolished. My k/d was .8 I was pretty agitated to be honest because I never go negative and I hate loosing even though it is just a game. I'm competitive like that. But what made it even worse was one of the guys I was playing with says, "wow, our team mate in first place only got a .8 k/d.. Let's back out and not play with that random." I say, "That's me." Why? Why would anyone say something like that when you did even worse?! I don't understand people sometimes. After that game I was getting a 4.0 k/d every game. Had to say it, "I bet you like playing with me now, huh?" Haha. We laughed it off. But the point I'm making is people (myself included) can take games too seriously. Enjoy your life, have fun. Don't be that hater that ruins other peoples day.

I take this game very serious, but I've learned from past games to just not care anymore and have fun with it. I have a wife and daughter that is my life, but video games are a huge part of my life so it is something I should care about. In my opinion video games are better than going out and getting drunk or doing drugs, they keep you out of trouble, and I don't like to hang with people in real life. It is to time consuming to go out with friends in the real world, when I can just sit in front of my tv with my wife and daughter in the same room with me. I really appreciate you sharing this, remember games are for fun!

          • While I understand the purpose of this thread is to let people know that the game isn't that serious...for a lot of people it is. While you may be able to do (just being honest here no offense intended) bad at the game and have fun doing it, that's not everyone. A lot of people play games like this with a group of friends, and it doesn't matter if you're playing basketball, video games or I Declare War, nobody wants to be the worst person in the group. Because of your extremely long hiatus from gaming I'd assume you play solo. I would also assume that you are more of a casual player (again nothing wrong with that). That is you. You can enjoy playing the game and not performing up to the standards expected. You can also probably enjoy playing with people who don't perform up to standards. This is not what everyone considers an enjoyable gaming experience. While you run and gun and go die repeatedly in a strike do you really think the person that has to clear out those waves possibly by themselves now to come and res you is enjoying it as much? You're a nice guy and I hope nothing I said rubbed you the wrong way, but you have to remember that even though it's a virtual world, while we are playing on it for just that short period of time - it's real. This is the internet. Due to anonymity people will be trolls and assholes. There is nothing you or anyone else can do to stop that. I would suggest instead of focusing on the trolls and elitists you should just enjoy your gameplay experience and block/remove the people that ruin your experience. What you shouldn't do is assume that everyone can just play the game, do badly and have fun. There are a lot of people who get their enjoyment from striving (even if they never achieve it) to be the best. And you need to respect those people as well just as you expect them to respect you.

            • I don't really see how your personal life has anything to do with it and I also don't see why you feel the need to tell us all about how you like playing casually. It's fine if you do, people that are bothered by it shouldn't be given attention., but YOU also need to realise that there are people who play this game seriously and want to progress further into the game. And yes they stay up and play a lot for that. And yes having someone run and gun and not holding the control points in the crucible is really frustrating, when you're trying your best. Having that conflict between palying styles is natural and will obviously cause some friction. Best thing to do is to just ignore it. I find it really ironic that you are complaining about how people shouldn't judge you for your casual playing style, while you judge them for being a competitive gamer and it kinda bothers me that you feel like you're somewhat more of a human being than those people (at least that's how you come off to me, after reading this). I'm sure you don't mean harm, but just because you're a casual doesn't mean you get to judge others over their lives.

Let people live the way they want to live. Have fun playing the game your way and let others have fun playing theirs. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. The end.

                • gaming today is dictated my the minority of little kids on the forums that whine until they get there way many games have been nearly killed because of a toxic community of whiny little kids Homefront, Titanfall, BF4 have all been great games till things started getting nerfs/buffs if its too hard the kids cry nerf if they get killed to many times by a certain weapon they cry nerf the Destiny community is really bad years ago if we found a loot cave we didn't have hundreds of little kids bitch instead everyone would join in and reap the benefits of poor game design gaming is gettting worse its almost like we are going backwards instead of forwards and for the most part Developers aren't to blame we as gamers are gamers are ruining gaming

I'm 36, I do play video games as my primary hobby and I do spend hours practicing my headshot game. My raid guns are fully upgraded, except the hezen vengeance which is one slot away. I'm also married, a father of 3 and a professional en route air traffic controller. Maybe you should try golf.
