Figure out which armor you want to work towards in the tower. I grinded patrol missions and strikes to build up my Vanguard Rep and Marks, then fitted my guy with all the Legendary armor I needed. also kill everything and collect those engrams. I've gotten lots of cool stuff from leveling up my Cryptarch rank.
