The soul of the game feels gone.

This isn’t a “Muh D1 better” post, I hate those. This is just a post reflecting on what once was to understand just how much we’ve sorta missed out since thing. No, I’m not talking about the DCV, as that’s all people want to talk about today. What I’m talking about is the soul of the game. What made Destiny Destiny and what made us fans continue to play even in its worst droughts. I really think it comes down to just a few factors. 1.) Power Creep While it’s PvE, we’ve had a super notable huge power bump lately. 3.0 Subclasses (mostly Titan, from a Titan main) have just gotten out of hand and have hurt this game. It was a red flag when we heard of ‘monochromatic builds’ because the second it was announced our builds were about to be constructed to 1 elemental type to be an engine for our abilities. Why this is relevant I think ties to why people have loved Destiny for so long, and that goes to the Gunplay. We’re long past the point of slow firing autorifles and fun hand cannons in PvE, as realistically you’re using an smg with some kind of perk that fuels your subclass. This isn’t a call for a nerf to smg’s whatsoever, just an observation. It just confuses me how Bungie had a blueprint on how to design the 3.0 classes without stripping them of their identity in Destiny 1. I didn’t want an identical system or even identical classes. But I didn’t expect Titans to get access to Devour and Invis, then become a grenade spamming class. 2.) Game Difficulty, and what makes this game ‘Difficult’ I think this is a universal issue that comes as a result of several underlying issues. The first major one being power creep. We’re so strong bungie has designed living roadblocks in the form of champions to halt us and make sure we’re switching things up. They didn’t want to nerf players and let us feel strong, which is understandable. Doing that however creates a problem, in which most content becomes trivial. If there’s no champions, it’s rather easy. People like to say Day 1’s are hard, sure, dealing with pesky slightly harder ads is tough but in reality they would be a breeze if you weren’t discovering mechanics for the first time. Maybe failing a damage check or two cause Jimmy is using chaperone for dps. It genuinely feels like we’ve gotten swept up in a storm of Bungie trying to please everyone that we’ve landed in 2 spots. Gameplay is extremely easy where your gunplay is nonexistent and you’re spamming abilities. Or you’re spamming your abilities with an occasional roadblock. 3.) The soul of Bungie just doesn’t quite feel there. I love Bungie. From their older Halo games to the new stuff they make seasonally in Destiny. But because I love a company, I’ll criticize it. The company seems to be a shell of its former self. The drive to innovate and be their own person feels like it’s trickled down to a PR stunt. Otherwise, we’ve completely missed who Bungie used to be. Sci-Fi Creators with a passion for the touch of fantasy that made 2 beloved universes. Left with a shell of monetization, lack of communication with the community down to their own marketing being limited. We still don’t know what we would be paying for next season. For some of us who bought the Deluxe we don’t have to see trailers as we’ll have to get what we get. But for those who base their money on what they see it’s clear Bungie’s noticed and will no longer show us much until the day of to convince you to compulsively buy. This game no longer feels like it’s a passion project and instead has turned into a money generator for Sony and Bungie to thrive off of while they dedicate teams to new projects and leave this one to die. This game no longer has a soul.

  • Them working on other games is starting to show in this game. Maybe lets put down the mobile idea and allocate those resources where they're needed.

It feels like Bungie has lost their passion for the franchise & are doing the bare minimum to keep it profitable. They went from wanting to make the best game possible to only wanting to make the most money possible. Bungie went from an awesome indy game developer to a Walmart style corp.

    • Nice read OP. I guess it could be argued that the soul of the 'game' is still there, it's just that it is vastly different to what it was. Bungie has changed from a passionate, dedicated, talented, exciting, innovating dev who cared about producing exciting, interesting and enjoyable games, to a lazy moneygrubber. High quality game crafted with passion vs budget quality (yet overpriced) dress sim.

    • Of course the soul is gone, they went full corpo. If the telesto "event" is anything to go by. Its 1 of the scummiest ways to sell a meme shirt. Its feels so "whats up fellow kids" The "event" was just 1 giant nothing burger, to sell a shirt.

There's a reason why no one plays this trash anymore. 😂 Pvp completely abandoned, barely any sand box updates, 1 map in 3 years 😂😂 Constant recycled content. Trash pinnacle system. Sun setting. Focused on eververse rather than actually fixing the game.

          • What made the first game fun lore wise was that you had to learn about the enemies and story as you went along, gradually adding up to the bigger picture but maintaining a sense of mystery still. 1. 3.0 did kind of destroy a lot including builds and entire exotics, many abilities now merged makes classes kinda moot. 2. Difficulty would be great if bungie would delete champions. Bungie could then make stronger mini-bosses that don't rely on teleport/health-regen/gun-mods and the stupidly simple boss stomp mechanic that they also gave to things lacking legs. 3. Bungie lacks direction. The best solution would be to end the game, and make a 3rd game but fix all the known issues first. Revamp the graphics and fps to match modern games, add dedicated servers, delete Halo-era P2P entirely, fix matchmaking, make new gambit modes and maps, make new crucible maps, show actual care for both modes and update every now and then, remove AE. Transfer current D2 character and equipment over to D3, never need a DCV or Sunset of anything D2 but keep D1 and D2 up but go back and maintain holiday events on all three to keep it fun.

            • Plz Bungie just put a bow on this game and wrap it up. It feels to me that they had a 10 year plan but quit along the way and now they just need Destiny to bring in revenue. You had a good run.

              • There is only so much low effort people can take, and Bungie have pushed too far this time. They just returned weapons they sunsetted, they introduced origin traits, they made old and new weapons craftable - then made EVERYTHING in the game revolve around that! It was fun for one season, it was bearable for the second, but by the end of the third - people are sick of it. Now they announced the old raid weapons craftable, so they intend to double down on that? Cause it's not playable content they make, but new weapons to grind for, doing things you've done so many times already! A hundred times less work for them, same amount of money gained. Well, they managed to get away with it for long enough, but they obviously thought they will be able to do it forever with no consequences...

              • Agree. I still have not preordered the new expansion. I'm waiting to see if Bungie cleans up their act. (i.e, unvaults all D2 vaulted content, fixes PvP and add more stuff to it, fixes Duality, stops over-using champions, etc) Otherwise, I won't buy Lightfall. This is coming from someone who has played this game since 2014 and completed all moments of triumph ever.

              • For me the problem is the seasonal model. It forces bungie into focusing much of its time on disposable drip fed content. Does anyone actually find logging in each week to get 5 mins of story and 30 mins 'grind this activity to death' fun? It's just boring. We have core playlists and features that are borderline untouched for massive periods of time and this the meat and bones of the game. This is where improvements and evolutions should be happening. Strikes - there's so much that could be done here to freshen them. Add wacky modifiers that make some weapons crazy, up thier difficulty so you're not sleepwalking through them. Add.....MORE. A new strike twice a year in what's meant to be the main core activity does not cut it. Here's the problem though. Bungie likes the seasonal model. Not because they like the challenge of making content that fast, they cearly struggle given the mass of bugs each and every season....No. They like it because it gives them an excuse to charge players for content every three months and to refresh all the MTX. They like the money it makes them. I mean it's been slowly killing the game for years now, but it makes money so....yay! Right? Since Bungie has become more and more its own entity, it started acting more and more like a business that was making a product, not a developer making a game out of passion for the subject matter. Very few studios find that fine line in between the two, Bungie being one of the ones that has very clearly failed to. I've played games for a long time. I've never seen another one that so blatantly goes out of its way to force you to spend time in it but seems to want to do the absoute minimum to give you a reason to.

It's stupid when players say comments like... "You are just tired of the game", etc... Even though for me this is true, it's because of obvious reasons. Bungie on their own doesn't have what it takes and never will with a game like this. I don't have to buy LF to know what 90% of the content will be and the miserable process I would have to go through because it's been the same since the split with Activision. I'm tired of the rinse-and-repeat BS with the false claims that they will fix things or improve things, etc... ( after we buy whatever they are selling only to find out it's more the same with minimal effort, with streamers right up there helping this business sell their product no matter how wrong it is. Not everyone that makes a post that doesn't have the same opinion as some of you Bungie fans "are tired of the game" as some of you fans try to put it, (they are tired of the mind games this business plays) It's funny how some fans act as if they speak for everyone and proceed to try and tell others how they feel or what's wrong. News flash, you don't get to speak for anyone but yourself. I only speak for myself as I always have and will never let anyone tell me how I feel or what to do about anything in my life. You are right OP, the game has lost what it use to have, and that's because this business remove it or the key people quit or they left like Activision did that took a lot of talent with them that knew what they were doing.

                      • I do feel a sense of “mass production” to the seasons. The formula feels too structured and lacking originality or diversity. I’m not saying they’re being lazy, but it does feel like they’re taking the easier path. It also feels like Bungie is leaning way to hard into grind as a substitute for content. As though they are terrified we’ll get what we want in a few weeks each in a season and leave the game and forget to come back for the rest of the story missions and then the next season. Which I’m sure is about making players as exposed to Eververse as possible to increase the likelihood they spend real money to buy stuff. Also we haven’t had a character with the same whimsey as Cayde. The closest we got was out ghost mimicking Drifter for a mission. But there really isn’t a “comic relief” any more in the game.

                      • Something else i cant quite explain, going back to D1, the theme and feel of the game is so different than D2. D1 feels like it has mystery and wonder to it, while D2 just feel likes a cut and dry meatgrinder with loot. Idk

                        • I feel like I’m mostly doing thing I don’t enjoy in this game to get things I want nowadays. Example: I enjoy the King’s Fall raid, and thought about going for the seal, but all the triumphs for the seal are unenjoyable to do imo. So I got to force myself to do all these unfun chores to get the seal completed. The raid is fun otherwise. Most things in this game relate to this formula. Things need to be changed to focus on fun factor, rather than annoying obstacles. I think that’d make the game more fun and bring its soul back into fruition.

                          • there is but one definitive proof that the soul of the destiny many fell in love with left us when the people who not only worked on halo left, but many of the people who worked on D1 are either gone, or are senior employees with a minority voice in a business that values profit and audience growth by over retaining loyal and longstanding customers.

                              • Yes. Bungie is no longer a family business. It’s now a subsidiary managed by cash flow obsessed financiers. Tbh it’s all ok, they’ve largely done a good job shifting model. The only really red flag is how the company is cash cowing on a dead bone to feed projects no one really cares about, and that won’t compete with market forces, and not even trigger interest from fans. It feels like governance, guidance, vision, are now largely gone from Bungie. It’s a corporation managed in clusters with no cross culture or passion. They use the woke thing to try to tie employees together but they lost their identity fosure.

                                  • I’ve only been in the game for a year or two. But even I feel that things have gotten noticeably cookie cutter since then. Sure there are some charming story moments, but the repetition is the thing that’ll probably end up causing me to leave at some point. That, or the frustratingly low attention to basic QOL improvements
