The Fantasy:
Bungie introduced crossplay and sold us on the idea that it would be great for the health of the game. The player matchmaking pool not only increased in size, but also brought in a much wider range of skill levels. They also put a big emphasis on the repeated message of, "Now you can finally play with all of your friends, regardless of what system they play on." With the exception of people being worried about unfair advantages that PC players have over console players (ie: cheating, m&k accuracy, movement speed, faster frame rates and wider fov) most players were genuinely excited about the change.
The Reality:
Because we STILL do not have dedicated servers, crossplay has major latency issues. There are numerous people on the Bungie forums, Reddit, Youtube, etc. complaining about the lag they are experiencing with players on opposing systems. As an Xbox player, I don't see much issue with pc players, however the lag with Playstation players is -blam!-. I have also seen countless Playstation players complaining about Xbox players being laggy. PC players just complain about everyone on console because you know..."PC master race" <insert eye roll here>
After playing Iron Banner all week, it's gotten to the point where I can now predict with nearly 100% accuracy what console someone is on before even looking at the roster screen, just based on if they are teleporting, taking a full clip before dying, registering as dead 10 seconds after I actually killed them, or killing me through walls. Considering that most matches I get put into have anywhere from 4-6 Playstation players on the enemy team, I am constantly dying in gun fights that I absolutely should be winning. Headshots that don't register or register late, rubber banding players that are directly in front of me 1 second, I put 3-4 pulse rifle bursts into them then suddenly they are 10 meters behind me and 2 tapping me with a hand cannon, or dying to a fusion rifle blast through walls is rage inducing. I finally got so fed up with it all that I started searching online for a way to turn off crossplay. I successfully did so and then rebooted my xbox. As someone who has D2 accounts on both PSN and Xbox Live, I have always found Xbox to be a much more reliable network. Surely, I'll have a better experience now that I'll only be playing with other people on XBOX live, right? WRONG!
Everything that I found online said that turning off crossplay would only prevent you from playing trials. Apparently Iron Banner is also affected because I sat in orbit for 10 minutes and wasn't matched with a single player. (Not even xbox players) I thought, maybe this is just a fluke bug since I changed the settings so I rebooted my xbox, reloaded Destiny and tried to que into IB again. Same result...not a single player was found. Now I'm really pissed. Re-enabled crossplay, rebooted, and went into IB. I was almost immediately put into a match in progress where my team was being blown out 98-30. First enemy I encountered, I landed 3 bursts to the head and 2 to the body with a God roll Jian-7, just to watch him not only run away, but then insta-kill me with Landfall through a wall and from easily 20 meters away. (and before you suggest that he had 10 resilience, NO...he had 4)
As someone who has played this franchise for 7 years and has primarily been a PVP player, I can say with certainty that the pvp experience has been neglected and ruined for at least the past 2 years. Players have continually voiced their displeasure and it very much feels as though the devs are either deaf, or not concerned. The player pool died off tremendously because of it and instead of Bungie actually having "a renewed focus on pvp" as they promised, they implemented crossplay as a way of giving the illusion that there was a bigger player pool. Yet, we're still playing with the same shotty netcode & player hosting that has always been problematic in this game. Is there even a "team" working on pvp anymore? It sure as hell doesn't feel like it, and hasn't for quite some time now. This franchise used to have the most rewarding pvp experience around, and it feels like it has just been left to die and rot for the past few years.

1 ReplyMost rewarding PvP experience around? This has to be a joke. And Bungie hasn't been neglecting PvP for years either. You get trials every week and Iron Banner every month...
-
2 RepliesPlaying on Xbox is pretty bad now considering every match is mostly against playstation.

2 RepliesGuess I’m living in a fantasy since crossplay has improved the connections I see and my overall quality of life playing activities. Finally something has gone my way in this game, about time!
-
Sad to say.....we're never getting dedicated servers in this iteration of Destiny. Those plans died with the scrapping of D3
-
1 ReplyYou can turn off crossplay at least on Xbox.

4 RepliesLoL WE’RE NOT GETTING DEDICATED SERVERS. 1) This Hybrid system we have is literally built into the foundation of the game. 2) They’re not spending that kind of time, money or Resources to do such a complete rework for a game that’s WELL OVER HALFWAY THROUGH ITS LIFE CYCLE. GET OVER IT. ITS NOT HAPPENING IN D2.
-
Bungie doesn’t care.. how can you not see this by now. I also think there isn’t a dedicated PvP team any more because PvP has been neglected for two years now. Bungie just keeps lying to us so we hang on while they try to do something with the outdated net code.

6 RepliesEdited by TB: 11/7/2021 6:39:32 PMNot to make a pc over console remark but man as a PC player, my experience with raiding since crossplay launched makes me not even want to touch vog until we have a full group of homies to fill spots (specifically master vog, normal is a walk in the park) Too many console players quitting after 1 or 2 wipes during an encounter and using the terrible in game chat over Discord. You can’t get a feel and adapt to each encounter if your team leaves as soon as one guy dies every time you join an LFG team. Like Season of the Splicer on PC pre cross-play yeah you have a bad/toxic raid team from time to time but man are people so much more consistently chill and efficient on PC. I’m not saying it’s exclusively a console only problem but from my experience it’s more in the majority there. I like being able to play with my console friends, that’s awesome but like raid LFGs take the game way too seriously.

You want this fixed? There's a very simple solution. Just get the 'content creators' or 'streamers' to make a youtube video, crying their eyes out about how unfair life is when they have to play on equal terms. Last one I saw, about Trials, I thought I was on the flight deck of the Nimitz there was so much whining. Once Bungie see the little darlings having a tantrum and stamping their tiny feet about crossplay the problems will be fixed. Can't have the babies being upset now, can we?

Edited by DeathPony07: 11/7/2021 9:16:53 PMThe money Bungie makes from Eververse could have paid for dedicated servers many times over. Destiny PvP isn't popular enough for them to justify the cost.

Agreed. I usually turn cross play off in qp. But being forced to leave it on in trials is a ridiculous.
-
I really want to say crossplay is new they will adjust BUT....... Latency connection issues have been with destiny for a long long time and they keep pointing to our connection. It's a 2 way street hopefully they will look at the whole picture and fix things here and there. To be honest I wouldn't mind the game being shut down for a bit for them to change up everything
-
I agree yesterday I had two games where the lag was so bad it was just about unplayable. I doubt Bungie will fix this issue so From now on I’m just going to back out the game

Edited by Shalashaska: 11/7/2021 9:16:11 AMif you want to know the dangers of the outdated peer 2 peer system and why dedicated servers and the best option especially for your ip information look no further then gta 5 and the ignorance of rockstar and look back here at destiny 2 and bungie

The problems with Iron Banner have nothing to do with Crossplay. IB has always been laggy because Bungie doesn’t region-restrict. So people form six stacks from all over the place…and then get matched up. So you can be playing someone who is literally half way around the world.
-
1 ReplyDont base your crossplay stats around iron banner. Its well known that this mode is always laggy for some reasons, even tough its basically QP with an iron lord logo slapped on it.
-
Same here. I can already tell an Xbox player, from a PS player, from how the game behaves. Whether in pvp, or pve.

8 RepliesHundreds of posts have echoed identical issues and experiences! I too have been playing since 2014 (but only joined up to Bungie net 2 years later) and have just today, replied to a thread regarding latency/lag issues on yet another players' post. This has been going on since the season began, and I am finding it difficult to clearly identify cheats vs lag .... because the latency is so, so bad. It used to be about 100 ms here in Western Australia, but the ping now blows out to as much as 125-150. And that's on a good day! My entire clan is feeling it too so it's not just a "me" thing. Cheers Guardian! Let's hope they actually improve things before the 30th Anniversary release!

2 RepliesThe issue is that Bungie just know better than we do. I totally agree and if anyone at Bungie plays the game no I their little private place on the studio network, they too know. What pisses me off the most is the way they ignore the issue and don’t speak of it.
-
Couldn’t agree more. Crossplay has hurt the game rather than benefit it. But without implementing dedicated servers nothing will change. They are crazy if they think people with an ounce of logic will jump on their new competitive IP they announced months ago. Peer to peer is outdated and lazy. Squandered potential is all this game is.
-
I simply have no choice but to report every console player I see in a lobby for "Bad Connection / Severe". Never met a single one that was not teleporting.

1 ReplyAs an Xbox player that regularly plays against PS players in crucible, I only see lag intense enough to negatively affect my experience maybe once every 3-4 games. I’ll admit that it’s an increase from pre-crossplay times, but it’s far from “ruining the entire game.” Most people in this thread are likely exaggerating by good bit, OP included. Overall, matchmaking times are down by a fair margin, and it’s been easier to fill up raid groups on weird nights. I’d say that crossplay is good for the game, but sure, some extra work to get rid of the kinks would be welcome.
