Why do people gatekeep this game so badly?

Its really unlike any other game I’ve played. In destiny people seem to mystify things like raids or trials or gms with some elitist attitude like only the “best” should be able to play. People push against things like matchmaking for stuff which would be an objectively good idea with a voice chat fix like...team game with no way to make a team ok. I think even d1 had an easier system. There’s a lot of stuff a lot of people are missing that make this game a lot more complicated then it needs to be. Trials is just pvp it isn’t some big thing. Anyone can play. Raids are just a long strike with mechanics. Just because someone doesn’t want to have to get there phone and discord just to play a free game doesn’t make you better. Do better as a community and make things less scary and maybe save this hemmoraging player base and hopefully bungie does too if they realize casual players will bring them money too. But I also wanna know why??? Why do people get so defensive when raid matchmaking is brought up or making trials a fair mode???

Cause raid matchmaking would be a disaster as I promise you raids will still hardly ever get done, and people will always leave randomly, and others who have no clue will never want to learn and just get carried, all it'll do is cause casuals on the forums complaining about how hard the raid is, and making it easier. And for trials that'd be horrendous as all it'd do is make it easier for teams to go flawless, they'd simply wait till they don't match up against a team and back out every time they see the lobby fill up to quick. That and freelance would make going flawless not even an achievement anymore as it'll be like comp where it's just rng if you win cause your betting to get good teammates and ruins the point of trials, for everything to be on the line and to fight against another team to see which team is better. Last thing we need is more hand outs

    • I mean, it should be really simple. Add matchmaking, add the ability to vote people out / boot em This game is best when it’s a casual, social game. But you have a bunch of losers that think they’re better at life bc they can complete the raid or go flawless

      • Because bungie is focusing on end game mechanics that reward team work more than power level. They want to test the sherpas so that solo-ing is not much of a thing like it was in d1... Thus everyone wants people in the know on the mechanics. Realistically, this game is boring. Boring leads to people who do not want to spend so much time on something that they could farm faster. Trials/PvP... money. Everyone wants to be the best. Either through skill or mods/cheats.. But there is money to be made or “popular” players that might reach out etc.

      • In my experience, most of the "gatekeeping rules" are due to one of two reasons. Reason one: the person requiring crazy milestones in order to be part of their team wants to be carried and believes they'll get someone like Esoterrick to push them through the content. Reason two: the person requiring crazy milestones in order to be part of their team actually thinks the game is hard to play and believes all those people who got carried will have the knowledge to do it themselves without having to explain things. That said, it's their team and they can do with it whatever they want. I'd like matchmaking for all multiplayer activities because nothing in Destiny is hard enough to require premade groups to complete (though some things, like Trials, would really work to your advantage if are premade when possible). When no teams fit what you're looking for, you just make your own.

        • I hear the same ole reply, over and over again. OP raises a valid question and people attack OP. How original. OP, I agree. These attitudes are present in every game though. I have found some awesome folks through random matchmaking, so I don't really understand the no matchmaking for even the highest/hardest game modes. I believe it's time to open the game wide open. One thing I'll disagree slightly on is Trials. It's gated bc the rewards are supposed to be better and top-tiered for you to prove you are worthy. That said, Adept weapons should be available everywhere in the hardest content BUT there should be matchmaking so randoms like myself have access.

          • because it's designed that way. like literally, the gatekeeping starts at the pay to access certain content necessary for relevance.

Many studies have been conducted and provide very simple answers. Their conclusions point towards lack of personal realization irl. In fact, people who play video games extensively are generally jobless or taking refuge from the real world. Completing bounties, obtaining special items, looking good and so on tend to provide similar satisfaction and sense of accomplishment and differentiation than their equivalent irl. On top of that, you have to add group theories, which by definition will exacerbate commitment towards reaching these goals. That said, there are many consumers (read players), who buy this game only for the campaign and a few hours of playtime here and there. These are the reasons why Bungie’s RNG is profile based, designed to normally distribute missing collectibles over a projected timeline that is function of each player’s average daily hours and distribution to the product’s life cycle. Ultimately, Bungie’s objective is to satisfy and capitalize on every group of gamers profile. Yes, this is a for-profit organization and not a social group. Now I agree it can feel frustrating depending on time available to play and the desired content to play, but Bungie as a company is doing a good job when they increase time played and revenue per client. Looking at sales and Eververse’s significant increase in revenues y/y, they’re doing a great job. Their objective, as such, is not to care about the segments that will continue to play their game whatever the content or thresholds to content, but rather attract and convert more segments. Giving up on 50 power levels per season, is probably the best answer that they are giving you, although it can be a risk too if there is not enough content distributed/released along the season.

            • Ego Toxic Elitism All leading to deriving ones self worth from a video game. When you’ve never really accomplished much else in life, this game can fill some holes. Sad but true.

            • Agree. Sadly plenty Elitists in the Playerbase. Sometimes very toxic. Wss not always like that it became like that with d2 and it's a big part of how the game changed to increase that.

              • I only speak for the PvP locked part. I helped around 120 people in past to reach 2100 glory points. Helped a lot of people getting some pvp related quests done. Helped some people in Trials to reach the 7 wins for the solstice of Heroes Event. This content locked pvp stuff makes me sad. When you are not good in pvp games but need to play pvp for the best weapons and the best gear in general... idk what to say more its a bad system. In a cheated game like destiny locking stuff in a mode which doesn`t get controlled by an anticheat, to high auto aim/bullet aim and such unbalanced sandbox. This community is toxic af. Going ones on the destiny 2 lfg pc discord and you get flamed if you ask for help. had a discussion with an dude, he had 200k pve nade launcher kills also 20k in pvp found out he cheesed his kills like no one else. Guess what you get more insultet than ever. And the attitude from some folks like "you are not good enough to go flawless huh?"... "than gid gud" doesn`t help. Some Streamers already said that destiny 2 dies over longterm, but bungie completly ignores it.

                  • Because the Destiny community is largely made up of cliquey snobs or toxic trolls. There are some nice people, but they are outliers. Gatekeepers are often just being rude to be rude. More often than not, when I have interacted with them, they are squeakers or cliquey groups of friends. Not actually super skilled.

I found the best solution for this game, I stopped playing. Enough of all the bullshit that comes from being a solo player in this game, there should have been a Trial solo queue from the beginning, its such a joke. And I have been asking for a ranked system for competetive for 2 years but nothing ever happens, SBMM vs CBMM seems to be similarly bad although I would say that SBMM is slightly better imo. And also in competetive you sometimes drop in, in solo freelance from lobby 1vs3 that should just auto quit the match as it is not fair at all...

                  • These people believe being good at Destiny gives their otherwise meaningless lives meaning. It's pretty sad. A while back we ran into some piece of work doing the "Christmas Tree strat" in a raid. What is...the Christmas Tree strat you ask? Solid question...its when you arrange your green dots on raid report to look like a Christmas Tree. Not joking, wish I were.

                    • From my standpoint, trials was meant to be the elite vs the elite. Not to say that not everyone can join, but to say that when you say your getting ready for trials, you grab your best loadout, you tell you 2 other friends who enjoy pvp, and you go to war against others with similar ideas. To add matchmaking to it, takes away from the cohesion that trails is meant to have. If language becomes an issue, your team will falter, if time becomes an issue, then your planned lighthouse run ends because a matchmade random went to bed early for work, and so on. I feared the idea that solo people can jump into trials as they will be massacred upon the fire of those who have spent months at the lighthouse. i cant remember the quote, but I do recall someone saying that on a TWAB, that they plan to give solo players a chance at trials. However, if that's means elite/trials 1v1, that's an entirely different story and I'm all -blam!-ing for it. For grandmaster nightfall's the same thing applies, though I will stand down the argument as people who cant communicate at all have performed great things and I will not denounce them for it, that is however because they were also expecting this and planned ahead for it. I believe the issue is with the fact that in d1, our highest difficulty content was raids (of that dlc or after the April update, prestige raids), trials, iron banner, and that was it. Nightfalls could be done by everyone when they hit that light level and beyond. There was no grandmaster, it was just the nightfall, extreme pve with a whole lot of cursing and believing that a higher power will smite down that damn phalanx that just punted you into a wall. We also had the prison of elders and its extreme difficulty that even made thorn a viable option for dps against a boss. it just worked back then because the content was difficult, but not camping every corner, finding hiding spots, and praying the enemy forgot grenade day. Raids in d2 do technically have matchmaking, but no one prepares for the idea that they will be a guide for a new player unless the group decides beforehand, its the 6 they know or the 6 they lfged with and planned ahead for. By matchmaking it, you have the worst case scenarios as possibilities, someone rages and quits at the boss due to a wipe, someone leaves to go do an errand and never returns, someone robs you of that sweet checkpoint to go help their other friends get it, etc. etc. raids shouldn't have matchmaking unless there's a system in place to prevent greifers. Grandmasters, same thing, though its nice to see new players getting helped out by those that have done them before, i fear for those times that they get gatelocked at the start because someone didnt bring their special, screw you captain handcannon, to stop him from teleporting 50 times. and yeah, thats my two sense trials: no matchmaking nightfalls: yes, to all tiers besides grandmaster raids: no unless antigrief is implemented

Destiny casuals are also the worst kinds of players. Most of them are not simply “casuals” they’re the kind of people who expect everyone to literally bend and cater to them. Back in my day I played a game called Final Fantasy 11. I had my first run in with actual elitists. People who wouldn’t let you join a group because your ring had 1 point less Strength than the “best in slot”. That kind of crap is elitist gatekeeping. Expecting a basic level of knowledge and dedication is not. If you want to do the activities than put in the effort like everyone else because if you don’t - not only are you bringing down everyone around you - you’re bringing yourself down. These things exist in games as challenges - because - believe it or not - challenges can be fun. However if you’ve grown up in an age of playing Clash of Clans and throwing money at your cellphone to progress - you’re probably not the kind of person who is going to read guides and research things in a video game. You’re probably the “I play games to relax” type. That’s fine and dandy. But don’t go strolling into a game designed to make your heart race, with enough flashing visuals to give an epileptic a seizure and core mechanisms designed by psychologists to be more addicting than grandmas gambling and say you’re here to “relax”.
