Prison of Elders got a lot of hate from the "Hardcore" players because it wasn't a Raid.
Personally, I liked POE. The lv.28 POE had match making, so it was one of the few times in D1 that I able to participate in an Endgame ( like ) activy.

Man that "floor is lava" modifier with arc burn wizards in the ogre room...

Yep, I remember the hate for HoW in general. The reuse of reef weapons(that most people hadn't seen if they weren't around for the early day queen event), no six person raid, the etheric light, treasure keys..... lack of content. But damn, compare what we got for $20 then to what we got for $40 now....... Bungie has become really bad at producing content

Yeh man it still has matchmaking at least for level 28, I like it too and imo it would fit with something similar as a game mode in Destiny 2. We need more loot and more rewarding activities. :)
