Dearest Bungie,
As an aging gamer, I beg of you... please add back skill based matchmaking for PvP. When I was younger, I rocked Unreal Tournament. I was unbeatable with my sniper shotgun (slug) in bad company 2. I even went through what felt like 10 dozen CoD games and stayed competitive. Then came Destiny 2, which is the smoothest, prettiest and most fun shooter I've ever enjoyed. In PvP, I can't do better than last place and .37 or so. Until this season, I really enjoyed playing PvP. I was evenly matched half of the time. I'd get run one game, then do the running the next. It was fun. Now, I get destroyed in every one of the 4 matches that I only play for pinnacle gear so I can keep getting my 100k nightfalls done.
Please think of us old people next time you tweak PvP. We're the ones who actually have cash to blow on Eververse.
Love and kisses,
Spesh.

The only people that complain about skill based matchmaking are the pros who want easy wins. Why don't we have a matchmaking system like Halo Reach, that would solve all the problems. It's been 10 years since it released can't be that hard.

1 ReplyYou guys are great! I truly appreciate the advice and positive comments. I'll try to adjust tactics as noted by several, but I have a lot of Leroy Jenkins in me. I don't expect to "git gud" as not-so-helpfully suggested, but I do hope to find fun again. To those blessed with youth and health, enjoy them and recognize them as the blessing they are. Those things don't last forever. One of the guys I've gamed with for decades just signed up for Med. He uninstalled Destiny, as it just passed him by. It is painful to think I'll be relegated to the candy crush competitive scene soon. Alternately abled gamers are vastly under-served today. To those who don't recognize the eververse comment as a joke, well... everyone who has time and resources to play video games is extremely privileged. Use some of that time to meditate and find joy in all things.

5 RepliesI'm in my mid 50's. I don't think reflex degradation is probably your issue unless you have an unusual medical condition. If that is the case I'm sorry. I'm writing this assuming you don't have medical issues. Unless you've fixed every other part of your game and are just losing sniping flick battles to top Trials players, then reflexes are not the issue. Here are some things you might try. Turn your sensitivity down to 4 or 5 (console) - yes some kids can play on 10, but you and I can't and all high sensitivity does is make the game way harder for us. Play only meta weapons and builds (maybe just Suros or GH with stability perks and kill clip). Think about positioning, be sure to disengage when losing, watch some training videos, don't take 50/50 engagements, etc. So much of the game is knowing the maps, knowing how players move in the maps, adjusting to opponent loadout and tactics, etc. There is a lot you can do to improve by just learning how people play the game. I don't have great reflexes, but still do just in Survival and QP. Trials is a different story. Just realize that without a huge commitment Trials is going to just be tokens and the weekly bounties and not probably a lot of wins or Flawless. That's ok if you decide it is ok.

1 ReplyI am a lot older than some of the guys commenting and chronic at PvP but you can still have fun. Stability perks seem to be more useful than rampage the ultimate is to have both and restraining the urge to rush in and be the hero also helps. Beating your own targets and not worrying about the outcome helps me have fun. Good gaming to all.

Keep your cable connected to your controller while playing as this eradicates lag. Give it a try

6 RepliesDon’t engage in the wide open. You are a mouse not a lion. Run along walls. Sneak. Shoot from cover. Use high mobility. Read radar and have a plan (fight or flight). If radar has too much red, flee little mouse. Go hide in the dark and take cheap shots. Nibble on your opponents. Never pass up cheese, even if lions don’t like cheese. You are a mouse. So use cheesy no skill loadouts.

1 ReplyYou also have to think about players who play a lot which puts them against insane players. For example, I didn’t even have lunas howl and I would match people every match rocking a not forgotten. I would play against flawless and unbroken when I wasn’t even close to those titles.

Idk why they don’t give you the option of preferring skill or connection-based matchmaking

2 RepliesEdited by policzanin539: 8/1/2020 5:19:21 PMDon’t beat the dead horse. Fighting for SBMM is a lost cause. I am 50 and quit D2 PVP long time ago. Frankly, I had a much better time in PVP in D1 even though my end KD was only .99KD. That’s because I got myself in a deep hole at the beginning. Shitty maps, Even shittier wrapons like MT and Recluse. When I was dieing in D1 from Hackmoon, Clever Dragon or Havksaw, at least every death I earned by stupid move. Here some ahole can whack you with MT for a godly distance and call himself a hero. PVP in D2 is BS.

Jet Set WillyIt’s all going concording to plan 😂🤣 - old
Yeah, Crucible is not a fun experience now. -
I’m 45, don’t blame yourself it’s this game that’s the problem... there’s hardly any primary gunplay anymore it’s all special ammo weapons, heck special weapons even outgunning heavy weapons which is why everyone apes people getting or with heavy. Find your favorite special ammo weapon, put on a scavenger mod and watch your numbers improve, sucks but in this sandbox the motto is if you can’t beat em join em. :/ or even better yet just play something else till the expansion drops in Nov, your sanity will thank you!

Edited by AARPgamerwithJD: 8/1/2020 3:02:35 PMI’m 56 years old. I can relate to many of your comments. I most certainly prefer SBMM. But my own view is that the debate about SBMM and CBMM will be endless unless Bungie makes some wholesale changes in philosophy about PvP. For instance, I think Clash/Control should be available every week with a SBMM solo option the way Survival is. Meanwhile, I do think it’s fair that both Trials and Iron Banner are run as CBMM, but I think Iron Banner should have a solo queue option even in that mode, to militate against the impact of 6 man stomp teams that appeared regularly last cycle. For the same reason, as it is currently set up, there should be a solo option for any 6 man CBMM PvP mode. A lot of problems would be at least attenuated just by adding that option. All that being said, I have been getting through the current CBMM options, albeit without a whole lot of enthusiasm. One thing I do is largely play Survival since it remains SBMM. And that has had the additional benefit of allowing me to work on getting both Luna’s Howl and Revoker before both weapons are sunset at the end of this season. I will lbe one of the very last players to get either of them, but at least I likely will get them. I do empathize with your experience though. And while as I did last cycle, I will again weather next week’s Iron Banner, I am sure it won’t be my favorite experience for many of the reasons you cite, though. One final note. I reached 1060 base on two of my characters this week, after a lengthy battle with RNG (lol, but that’s an altogether different grievance with the system). It’s a relief when you do hit that magic number, because then you don’t have to worry about Pinnacle drops at all. You just play what you want to play, and can ignore PvP altogether if that suits you.

3 RepliesEdited by chadley71: 8/3/2020 1:32:28 PMBit naive in respect of Bungie jsut changing it for us oldies (48 here) but either way its also naive of those younger kids saying reflexes have nothing to do with it. Everyone slows down with age, some more than others. Regular exercise helps the ageing process but sometimes your mind wanders and someone is on your back before you know it. Another time you would know and be prepared. That is where the reflex and reaction time matters the most. Still give the crucible quick play time and get say 1 in every 3 rounds a good tight match, where others can be one sided for and against. Never used to be like this but then again the wait times for SBMM did take the mickey sometimes. Sure I waited 10 minutes for a game to start once. Not good.

1 ReplyI think I'm loving the game more the less I really worry about the outcome of each match or battle. I might start my own clan for older gamers or gamers that aren't really worried about k/d's or results. Here's 5 mins of quality game play after I was launched into a match with my team already down 35v65. Living the dream ...... https://youtu.be/A0twZDSLI-U Lols.

Edited by BraddyBo: 8/3/2020 12:45:28 AMThats a sign to quit, not to ask for a handicap.

SBMM is bad, also young players are 90% of the playerbase

So i can spend 500 years in orbit and match people from mars? Ill pass.

I feel your pain but it's not reflexes it's hand/eye co-ordination. It definitely deteriorates over time but like someone else said take your time and don't go rushing in. I'm 48 and my aim is rubbish but this season I changed the way I play and found weapons that I find easy to play with (currently malfeasance and last perdition) and I don't rush into encounters unless I know I'm going to win (usually with shoulder charge) If you take your time, hug walls and step back when shot and hide until health goes back up you will definitely enjoy it a little more unfortunately there's so many people using cheats and mods right now there's always going to be a couple who ruin it for you but just ignore it and have fun

Play comp. Survival or freelance survival. It's way more enjoyable for us oldies than Control is now.

Nowadays the old thumbs are taking a beating trying to play fast, i use 8 sens on console and i keep up but you feel it in the joints now. I’m telling you now, these kids that grew up with the sticks in hand are gonna have a high number of arthritic hand problems when they get to our age or older. The tendons around the joints wasn’t designed for repetitive thumb stick gaming. Alot of us older gamers came up through the arcade parlour, first gen consoles and handhelds then back and forth between MnK and consoles again. Our wear and tear has been distributed over a lifetime of multiple gaming devices. It’s probably the main reason i play better with Warlock than any other classes in D2 because outside of Top tree dawnblade their mostly passive neutral game caters more to positioning with a rifle or bow in hand and i honestly find the pace of playing tactically more agreeable at my age than playing aggressively. Not talking about camping at the back of a map with a sniper, taking covered leverage spots on the map, blind corners, choke points and lanes and anticipating spawn flips and waiting to pop your super to wipe em coming out.
-
As a scrim player I don't use reflexes that much. Yes it's a tool but it's not everything. I'd say 50% is awareness and thought process. The other 50 is gunskill, ability use, and as you said reflexes. Reflexes play a small part of the game. They can be great but doesn't mean abusing them is the smartest play. If I were you learn to snipe and have a sidearm

I'm 49 and I do pretty well in PvP. Has little to do with age. PvP is not in a good place because the sandbox isn't very fun, but you can do well. If you haven't yet, switch to Hunter, it's EZ Mode. Literally the least amount of skill required to do some damage in PvP. And you have to run the meta, as much as I hate that. Use the guns that are killing you.

2 RepliesEdited by Chains: 8/1/2020 4:02:17 AMReflexes mean very little in video games to be honest the fact that people still bring this up is annoying. The reason you’re being out gunner isn’t because your slow reaction speed it’s because you don’t know what to do when you’re in a gunfight. For example my regular reaction speed is around 165-175 milliseconds and after an 8 hour sesh ( alcoholic beverage drinking session with the boys ) I came home and did the test to which by no surprise I got the average time of 290 milliseconds but guess what... I got on destiny 2 and played sum good ole Crucible and still was getting 30 plus kills a game while winning a majority of my gunfights because I have game sense and know what to do and when to do it. Edit: I also checked your Battlefield 4 stats and going from being unbeatable in bc2 to a 0.8kd in 3 years shows that’s this has been a rapid decline ongoing for years and I advise you to go to a doctor because there might be some serious medical condition going on here.

7 RepliesWhy would Bungie cater matchmaking specifically to you if all you're going to do is play your 4 weekly games and dip? It is, and should, create the most optimal and efficient experience for the people who play the mode the most often.
-
6 RepliesSo because you can't compete the game should dial it down and hold your hand? Nah, it's much better as is
