Ever since their introduction (not even properly explained) in D1, we've been given no other information. Sure they were introduced in the post-credit scene and somewhat in Season 6, but Bungie hasn't gone too far in-depth about what they actually ARE.
Do they rule as a collective body? Are they ruled under one leader? Is there an anti-traveler?
So many questions, yet some are unanswered. So, I did some digging.
I went back to the Grimoire cards from D1 and read some information on "The Darkness". I was trying to figure out if the Darkness is ruled under one leader, but the answers were pretty vague. Now, if someone were to read this entry, it would explain that people have different interpretations of what the Darkness could be. But this one struck out.
The Pujari Position describes the Darkness as a force with both physical and moral presence, an actualization of evil.
The word physical there really interests me. As we see from the post-credit scene, we can see the physical nature of the Darkness because they were operating a tangible spacecraft. Granted we don't know what they look like, and the quote is somewhat biased as well (considering the word "evil" there might be a loaded word) but I tend to agree with this position of the Darkness. Because what supernatural entity uses spaceships as a means of transportation? They have to be physical.
Overall, most of these theories in this entry seem to have come true.
- Saint-14's theory of an alien armada [check]
- Monist position that the Darkness is a superior technological force [check]
- Ulan-Tan on the basis of balance [maybe]
I thought I had to point out that section of the entry because it's gonna lead me down to theories that have already been suggested or that I possibly never thought of theorizing.
1: The Vex is the Darkness
This probably was addressed a million times already, but the Vex = Darkness theory is not too far off. Coming back to "The Darkness" grimoire, there was an interesting description of Darkness from the perspectives of the Monists.
Adherents invoke information theory or contend that the universe is a simulation, allowing advanced intelligence to gain weakly acausal powers by bending the rules.
Simulation? Advanced Intelligence? BENDING RULES?
That's Vex written all over it.
In Destiny 2, we've got some more expanded information on the Vex. If you're playing Gambit and come across Vex as the enemy type, the Drifter says something along the lines of:
(paraphrased) The Vex we're fighting are only the builders and constructors. we haven't come across their combat models.
Which raises a lot of questions, considering there is some deeper threat out there that we don't know of. And I haven't heard or seen a lot about this concept that the Drifter is explaining to us. Maybe it's just because the Drifter cannot be trusted and most of the things he says should be taken with a grain of salt. But, considering his interactions with the Nine (and I mention the Nine here because they're aspects of Darkness according to "Ghost Fragments: Legends 2") and whatnot, it's safe to assume he knows a lot more than us.
But with every theory, there is some complication to it.
One is that if the Vex cannot simulate the Light or control it, then it shouldn't possibly control the Light's counterpart - the Darkness. I think to some extent this is true, but we've never seen the Vex attempt to control the Darkness. And I don't think they would ever get the chance to, because this leads to a possible 2nd debunk to this Vex = Darkness thing.
The Vex don't care about the Light or the Dark.
Which makes sense because if we got back to Curse of Osiris, we're introduced to the ideal Vex future - one that is ultimately void of Light and Dark and the Vex are the only remaining thing. However, claiming that the Vex are separate from the Light and Dark totally debunks Ulan-Tans theory on the "balance" because if the Vex succeeds, there really isn't a balance anymore. Unless there is something between the Light and Dark - that "thin line" that some people refer to.
Maybe the Vex is that thin line? The Veil perhaps? I'm getting sidetracked but I want to remind everyone that The Stranger from D1 mentioned something about the Vex being the evilest thing from the rest of our other enemies. The whereabouts about The Stranger is unknown, but if I recall correctly, she can jump through different places in time.
But here's the thing: we don't approach a Vex and think "wow they're pretty evil".
Which finally leads me to the conclusion (based on what the Drifter has been saying, The Stranger's concern over the Vex, and the lore entries) that it is VERY possible that the Vex is the Darkness.
But there still are more possibilities on what the Darkness could be. I'm gonna address those in a future post because this one is getting too long. So this will be Part 1.
TL;DR: questions about the Darkness, Vex = Darkness, Part 2 being a continuation of these theories.

The Vex is not the Darkness. The Vex does not care enough about the Darkness. Calus says as much. All they want is to get rid of every single living thing in the galaxy so it’s just them. The Darkness as beings are those Pyramid ships.

7 Replies<The Vex cannot simulate Darkness. This was shown when they invaded Oryx's Throne World thanks to Crota's idiocy. They could not fight the Taken similar to how they cannot fight us. More importantly, the Mind Quria was unable to simulate Oryx due to his complexity thanks to his Dark powers. Quria is only able to simulate him now thanks to the combination of time and because it is Taken itself. The Stranger is an idiot. The Vex aren't evil. Evil means socially maladaptive.>

The Darkness is when you forget to pay the electric bill.

It's coming, that's all we know. clearly Mara knows about it, clearly the Drifter knows about it, and clearly the 9 know about it. Why we haven't told the vanguard is beyond me but hey whatever

7 RepliesEdited by MC 077 Lasombra: 8/26/2019 12:27:38 PMAfraid not. 1. The Monist quote you used would mean our universe is a simulation. This idea was floated back in D1, the cards of the Stranger showed she has been watching an unknown number of Guardians over time and was altering the past without her own future changing. 2. The absence of Light and Dark is balance. Zero is equal to zero. Ulan Tan is confirmed at this point. In game talk about balance has been persistent since D1 to present. The Vex are an interesting species. They’ve undergone the most changes during this ongoing retcon. Also...the “leader” of the Darkness has made an appearance in the grimoire. Oryx has spoken to it when it posed an unborn ogre and someone else saw it possess a dead Fallen Captain. I want to point that out again. That entity possessed a body twice. Well...didn’t the Black Heart try to do the same thing to the Vex in the Garden in 1? The Garden asked a question and the Vex are the answer. There is a good chance the Vex are related to the Darkness in terms of being a minion. A minion made for the Darkness. The Vex actually embody both the Sword Logic (in principle) and the Final Shape. They will convert or kill everyone (sword logic) until only Vex remain (final shape). Becoming part of reality...isn’t that the only way the Darkness could guarantee it can’t be defeated again? Maybe the Vex are meant to be the end game army of the Darkness. Just like Guardians are the end game army of Light.

I wish you to remember one thing: during an interview for Kotaku between Luke Smith and Jason S, Luke admitted that they [Bungie] had no idea of what the Darkness was and the entire narrative core of D2 was going reboted. Which means that many things we've heard about the Darkness and other topics in D1 are probalby... well, wrong or they've been modified in the meanwhile. For example, we now know that the Stranger was a complete off-character so basically everything she said was just garbage. We've got more informations about th Darkness and what's going on into the Destiny world during the last months that in the entire Destiny 1 cycle. Also, the Vex = Darkness thing it's pretty unlikely under many points of view.

Did you know that the original scene of the traveler was with her guiding it
