D2 helps me mourn

I know this sounds weird, but playing D2 helps me mourn. I think there's something sad about the Destiny universe: Humanity's greatest ambitions lay in ruins, there is some aspect of inner conflict, brokenness and solitude about all the characters etc, which somehow resonates with me at this point in my life. I was genuinely impressed with how the characters started to behave differently after the loss of their light. Zavala became more aggressive and lost his self-control, Ikora started to doubt the worthiness of human existence without light and Cayde? Cayde used humor to distract from the fact how vulnerable and insecure he has become. Also the fact that a kind of "vision" of both death and the return to nature in times of great crises sort of came to our Guardian in their darkest hour, rang true to me. A lot of people in these forums say that the writing and the story in D2 is bad. I think it just tends to be misunderstood.

The story of the game isn't bad, it's just poorly told and has more wholes and questions than plot lines and answers. I am fairly new to Destiny for example, and purchasing Destiny 2 around a month ago was my entry to this universe. I have absolutely no idea what the Vex, the Fallen, the Taken, or the Cabal actually are, why they're around, or why we are fighting them whatsoever. Because none of this gets remotely explained. The writing of this game is not bad, but it is absolutely lazy and shallow. Like so many aspects of the game.

Perhaps D2 is a sharp story changing point. Without any Light any guardian is nothing special. It is just simply remind us about that. The only issue is the story is not deep enough to make us understand this. If there was a side-kick NPC guardian (bonded to player at the very first mission) dead and his GHOST captured and destroyed by Cabal, that scene would be stronger and more impressive. On the other hand, I just found a youtube that showing New player vs Verteran in the dialogues : https://youtu.be/sLqIkOWF1RI The writers actually did some work but I believe it is just limited to console, and never on PC.

    • Check out mass effect 1-3 to explore those themes in more depth with far better characters.

It is bad writing, and stop looking at the sun. I know it'll give you superpowers, but I detect some heavy bias in terms of what you claim to see in character development. Blue magoo is the only character that can be argued to have experienced long-term change, with a temporary disposition of hopelessness followed by what you can argue is a more "causious" attitude. Don't need no man is only slightly different for one scene and then goes back to acting like a smart, powerful, independent warlock lady. Quip-bot 9000 doesn't change, at all, unless you want to count finding a chicken as changing. Here's a question, who's death would be more impactful? One of those destiny characters, or Dom?
I may have empathy, but expect no sympathy.
• There is actually a lot there. Especially with Callus. If you read all the lore tabs from all of the raid gear, there is a much larger story set up. The problem is, they removed the grimiore, so it seems to be much harder to track all of the back story down and put it all together.
Ummm... I Forgot What We Were Talking About. Been drinking a bit. Why does everything start in caps?
• I agree the base storyline is very interesting and complex. Some people try to focus on one part and sometimes miss the bigger structure of the destiny storyline.

They don't know how to use their Imagination correctly... I never had read the grimoire in D1 till the end of the HoW Era. All I did was using my brain and thinking about the ingame plot holes and what could be there. And my results were extremely precise near to the grimoire story. Please kids, learn to interpret correctly and you don't really need a grimoire or better story telling.

                • And those story topics were all told through roughly 30 seconds of dialogue... that’s not a compelling story... I mean you can tell me The Fast and the Furious movies are ambitious and amazing... and that’d be your opinion, but few people would share it with you. I’d assume your perspective is poorly cultivated with even worse examples of bad movies, but maybe you just found a small instance that spoke to you personally. As for D2... it’s been done 1,000 times. Bad guy is taking over the world, you have to stop them. Mortality has been expressed in just about every other action game and movie... I saw nothing original that resonated on an level with me. Maybe you’re easily persuaded by the cinematic strings playing in the background or you found similarities (however brief) to the characters and your current situation, but as for me I just rolled my eyes and finished slamming that cabals head into the ground at the end of the game with zero excitement. This story was ‘so compelling’ I couldn’t even tell you his name if I wanted...

                • Mmmmnope. D2's writing is pretty underwhelming. The story hardly references what happened in D1 outside of a few vague snippets of dialogue and Bungie still insists on trying too hard to be mysterious when in reality, the writing is weak. The lore of Destiny itself is full of potential, but the way that the lore is presented in the game could be MUCH better.

                  • You have made a very case for the writing and the story, which I personally had no issues with. But some of the dialogue was awful at best! I can't remember the lines now but there were some truly cringe worthy moments and a couple of laughable ones too

Yeah, I was almost tempted to write up a whole essay “CinemaWins” style for the story, but then realized that it wouldn’t be able to fit on a normal Forum Post lol
