I'm well aware that Rift is not the most popular game in the Crucible, but it's my favorite way to play Destiny. Please allow me to explain.
I've been playing shooters with a Clan - the same Clan - since Halo 2. We've taken a long path to get to Destiny, migrating through Call of Duty, Gears of War, Battlefield, Grand Theft Auto, Titanfall, and anything else that let has let us play as a team. Throughout those journeys, I've always loved objective-based gameplay.
My favorite scenarios occur when a game lets me acquire a crucial element (i.e. "Ball Taken!" or "I've got the bomb!") and choose my own path. I've never been comfortable defending a fixed position, and I'll usually lose a one-on-engagement in a kill-or-be-killed scenario. In a gametype like Rift, however, a gamer like me gets to shine. I know I'm not alone.
It's a rush to collect the Spark and go into full Quarterback Mode. I'm always telling my Clan that, if you want the Spark, you need to be willing to call the shots. The perfect Spark runner has a good sense for enemy choke-points. They link up with teammates and drive forward as a unified front. Or, they can use those same teammates to lure enemy defenders away from the flank they intend to exploit. Some of the best moves in Rift have nothing to do with pulling the trigger. I love the mental game - the tactical cat and mouse of it all.
I know... I know... This makes me "part of the problem," entering Rift with a solid team and winning through the brute strength of coordination. Playing Rift reminds me of amazing times that I had with the same old friends playing Assault or Capture the Flag. You can't change what you love. I'll take the scorn that comes from what we call "Victory through superior recruitment" if it inspires just one of you to go here and dip your toe in the water.
Please don't be mad at me for saying so. Please understand that I've been cannon fodder in every other Iron Banner. I've caught more than my fair share of Nova Bombs in the face like an idiot as I tried to control Zone B all by myself. I've been sniped out of the air like a clay pigeon as I floated around on Warlock wings in a game of Clash. I've bathed every map of the Crucible in my own blood - and I've been happy to do so. I love playing Destiny, and I don't mind giving you my Light. Someone has to lose, and it usually tends to be me. With Rift, I get to enjoy what's in my wheelhouse. It's been refreshing.
So, if you've played Rift this past week, I thank you. This Iron Banner has been a great time, and I truly appreciate the people who have played with me, even if against me. I've added some much-needed Light to my Warlock. I got to reconnect with some people on my friends list in the ways we used to play. Much love for every single Guardian we've met up with through Matchmaking - and that one lone wolf we pulled onto our team.
Mind you, the Crucible Team did not put Rift into Iron Banner circulation because I asked them to. I think maybe they know that there are players like me in the community, and they wanted to give us a chance to play some ball. Peace.

Wow I just saw this and wanted to say I agree that rift is easily the best 6 vs 6 game mode in Destiny. I didn't enjoy it at first until I said to myself it was similar to football or basketball which I prefer to something like golf or tennis. Once you know the game and maps it's great fun even if solo. An individual player can impact a rift game to a greater degree than any other 6 vs 6 mode, and as you are saying it's also the perfect team game. Rift really does have a great flow at all times. Never stagnant. The spark forces the action and the playing field stretches from spawn to spawn. There's only 1 football. 1 basketball. Everybody has to respect where the spark is at all times. I don't understand why it seems to be the most disliked game mode in the Crucible while sports like football and basketball are the most popular in the US, and even soccer dominating the world. Rift is similar to all 3. I'd recommend rift to all solo players. To teams- I'd suggest looking at things like deej where he's equating the carrying of the spark to playing quarterback or point guard. Pretend you are playing one of those 3 sports. Tons of fun if in the right state of mind. Thanks for writing this out I really enjoyed it even if 4 months later. Bring it back to Iron Banner!

deej i like rift i just cant find anyone to play with. have a nice day deej

Translation: We're appealing to shitty below average players. Yea because that's not the theme of this game since day 1 right?

31 RepliesDude, stop acting like you're playing your damn game or like you know anything about it. You don't even know what playing Destiny is. I seriously wonder what you're doing all day? You're our Community Manager. Yet you don't manage anything for or with us, you don't speak with us more than once a month and you don't even play the game regularly. And even when you play it, you don't play it with your community, just with your clan clowns. What the hell is your purpose? Do you really get paid for shit like that? I work 12 hours a day and still could manage your "job" easily. You're a joke tbh.

1 ReplyDeej, I'm sorry to say but... no one actually cares.

3 RepliesDeej, what is Bungie's general attitude toward the Round/Flat earth controversy? As a Destiny fan and Flat Earth Theorist I have always been interested to know what you guys think about the physical shape of the planet we live on. Thanks.

1 ReplyAM THE BEST RIFT PLAYER.... I WENT IN SOLO 90% OF THE TIME AND CARRIED YES CARRIED THE TEAM TO A WIN... COSMO I CHALLENGE YOUR TEAM TO A ONE OFF GAME. THE WINNER MAKES A CUP OF TEA. SORRY ABOUT CAPS MY BUTTON IS BROKEN

Rift is a solid game mode as you said with a full team agree. However without a team it lacks the Ability for instinctual team work that many other game mode provide. As destiny has come and gone from some people's memories I'm left not able to unit the team for it. While it has a place in something like iron Banner it does not. That said it's a great game when there are two made fireteams the epp and flow the fast save and cut offs is really quite nice, be great if we ever get a spectator mode ( keep it in mind). I get your trying to keep iron Banner fresh but rift is not ideal at this time to do that. Though I do look forward to playing it when destiny re-peaks which I really think it will.

1 ReplyYawn. I wonder who wrote that for you.

Hi deej

I enjoyed playing, was able to get both my character's bounties done easily, and even got my first Phantom. For a 55 year old Scrub Lord like myself, it was a good time.

3 RepliesI love Destiny I love Iron Banner I love Rift I had a great time, despite some laggy matches, it was fun. I'm mostly a soloplayer , and i do good. I love the strategic plays that comes with Rift. I reached LL 400 this Iron Banner without doing the new raid. I haven't touched it. So it is possible to go full LL through pvp. I love you DeeJ and Bungie. Happy Holidays!

4 RepliesI love rift! The absolute worst part about this game is all the people who act like it's the end of the world because they don't like the play list for IB. Or the map for Trials 😭😭. Salty, salt, salt. Get over yourselves! Your not the only one playing. This forum is so negative, you forget how many people actually like the game.

1 ReplyTL;DR -Game mode sucks

7 RepliesRift is so bad for solo players. Try playing solo and there will be a guy who makes you lose because he only goes for the spark. Ends up with 0.26kd Doesn't know how to shoot, aim, ...or even reload.

11 RepliesEdited by drew012278: 12/13/2016 5:10:47 PMYou literally barely play destiny then try to make a post to relate to the community. Cozmo was literally on twitch with some streamers playing the game. Deej you have little to no validity in this community online anyways, to be its community Manager. Maybe you are better in person at events. No idea. Leave online to cozmo he is doing a much better job than you. Drew out.
