Unpopular Opinion: K/D Doesn't Matter

Why is it that every time someone's skill comes into question, the first thing I hear from someone is "Your crucible K/D sucks, so you suck"? Seriously, I heard someone say that to someone else in WotM the other day. Totally unrealated to the current situation. EDIT: People were missing the point of the second paragraph and it was kind of porly written on my part, so I'm modifying it. Basically: There are people who don't really try in PVP that are good at PVE, and there are people who wreck in PVP that can't seem to grasp raids. So don't base your judgements of one on the other. EDIT 2: Something I forgot to bring to light before despite being the primary reason my own K/D is lower than it ought to be (Thanks to BrassedoffDan for reminding me)- You can easily get a good K/D by being in the back the whole game. But some of us aren't sissies. Some of us are AGGRESSIVE. We're going to break their lines, grab those crests, cap that Bravo objective, dunk that rift, or just straight up disrupt the enemy by any means necessary, and take down as many enemies as we can in the process! If being that shift in momentum and topping the team comes at the cost of a few more deaths, so be it. Guardians are immortal after all. EDIT 3: There are three other K/D-affecting things I should mention. 1. Unbalanced teams- you know the games. Where you end up against a full team and your team is getting repeatedy wiped by teamshotting, pack memtality grenade spam, and super chains. One game wouldn't be so bad, but there are days when you need to get something done and you're just getting steamrolled every game. Speaking of which- 2. Bounty/quest grinding- Good example: When you really just want to get the thorn quest over with, mayhem isn't up, and all you have is a shotgun and a few smoke bombs. 3. Just generally not trying all the time- Maybe you are grinding the crucible while watching a funny youtube video snapped. Maybe you like to play drunk every once in a while. Maybe you're too tired to do good, but too awake to go asleep. Plenty more examples, I'm sure. EDIT: 4. Dropping in mid match on a losing team and getting repeatedly slain by supers and heavy. Thanks Scrubbiest Scrub Also, TexasJedi_705 pointed out this relevant and pretty funny video by Badass Gaming: link

Only people with bad KDs say that KD doesn't matter, because they don't want to admit that they suck. The truth is, numbers don't lie. Also I believe that if you suck, you have no right to an opinion when it comes to crucible changes/balancing. You need to earn the right to have an opinion.

    • If you don't have a 0.90+ k/d you are worse than the average crucible player. Good comes in when you hit 1.15 k/d with a 60%+ ratio. And expert at crucible is a 1.6+ k/d with a 70%+ win ratio. I'm at 1.04 k/d with a 56-64% win rate.

      • K/D is important. You can't determine your skill based of off only Gun Skill. You can be the best shot, but you also have to know how to engage so that you don't die after every kill. Just because you're an aggressive, doesn't excuse use having a low K/D. You can be aggressive and maintain a high K/D, but this requires doing smart pushes, manipulating sight lines, trying to only engage 1v1s. Alternatively, you're saying K/D isn't important and then mention something completely different like PvE. PvE, unless it's a race for world's first, isn't competitive, and even then, it's a race against AIs. Yes, a lot of crucible gods aren't that good PvE, but that simple because they don't like it. I don't find it interesting and were it not out of necessity, I would not play it at all.

If you play solo, a high K/D plus a high kills per game record may indicate a high level of skill. The fact you can do that consistently without the aid of call outs and team pushes/communication says a lot about a player. A high K/D alone could just mean your stat-padding (shotgun camping, hanging back and sniping etc...). I started playing this game solo and struggled stat-wise. After a couple of months I found 4-5 regulars who were good and only ever played with them. My K/D went from 0.8 to 2.0, my kills per game went up and it was easy to maintain. The call outs help a lot, it allows you to clean up a lot of one shots and allows you to challenge in smarter situations. You're also more likely to hunt in pairs/trips allowing you to team shoot and/or bait and switch. Playing solo you wouldn't have the same luxury and normally would be more likely to play conservatively. Since I stopped playing with the regulars my K/D and kills per game have dropped significantly. Basically, if you play predominately with a decent team, your K/D usually takes care of itself.

          • It might matter more if I didn't go from a 2.4 game to a .3 game in less than half an hour. It's to I consistent to maintain a decent kd.

          • You forgot to mention, most of the time most of us don't care. Rewards, gear...drops don't care. I usually jump in, act a lil crazy get my bounties done and try for some drops, K/D and wins don't make a difference. Yes, I do try to win....I don't go stand around and get shot, but I'm not afraid to die either....I don't protect my K/D, but.....come IB I have never had an issue getting overall High score Bounties. Just different approaches to the game.....some care and some don't.

          • K/D will only matter when Bungie proves that it matters. like with a game mode that makes the best K/D first place or bounties where K/D is an objective. Other wise K/D DOES NOT matter. the only possible way it could matter is if the record was kept in one game mode only, and that to me would be Rumble. Otherwise All Bounties, Quests, etc... can wreck your k/d. want to see your true K/D? play 7 games in one game mode and check your stats, calculate your average, OR play one game mode only for one month, then check your stats. other wise your k/d stats are trash.

            • It doesn't matter as long as it's around 1 or higher. If you constantly go negative your only hurting your team not helping I don't care if you get 20 kills, if you have 21 deaths then you HURT the team. The whole point of pvp is to stay alive.

To me KD matters but I don't care about it enough in this game simply cause it's unbalanced. Games like cod
Call me a cod noob I don't care
everyone has access to the same things. But in destiny you have exotic weapons that you can only obtain through Rng same with any other weapon in this game except for the ones you buy obviously. Just think about it this way, Lets say I'm completely new to destiny and I want to play crucible. I'm gonna run into Last Word, Matador and all these overpowered weapons compared to my uncommon weapons and I'm just going to get slayed over and over until KD is negative. Like I said, I do think KD matters but in this game I don't sweat it cause the lack of balance it has. You can check my stats on the recent cod game I have like a 2.30 KD

Kd is important. While what you said is true, you fail to give a valid argument as to if you have a consistently high kd, that doesn't matter This isn't true. If you have a 2.0+ kd obviously you are consistently good. If you consistently have a .2 kd, it's apparent you are not consistently good. Excuses can be made up to an extent, but your overall kd does matter

              • On the casual side then no, but on the Esports side of fps like halo, cod, Destiny then yes kd does matter

              • K/d doesn't matter, overall, if your win loss ratio and completions are up there, but you left out the most important aspect as a factor in the overall analysis: Fun. An additional factor to consider is someone like myself, who never played video games until Destiny and finds most call of duty type players to be obnoxious boorish twits. I had to learn how to play in the crucible, while learning the skills to engage in the kind of effort involved. I have thousands of kills and deaths -- depending on the k/d rating you look at, I either suck or I am great. Neither of which matters to me -- a game of mayhem is a about fun, so I don't worry about that and work on having fun. I am not the best player by skill set in the game -- nor do I try to be. I have fun, because I am playing a game. , not competing for some form of reputation that is, in my world, meaningless. But for others, that reputation is important, and, in the circles they engage in and effort they put out, it is important and has social currency. "Sweaty try hard" they might be, but for them, there is personal value in such statistics, because while I might have 4K hours into the game, they likely have that many in other games and probably use gaming as a central feature of their sense of personal worth. There are five types of gamer. They do not always get along or value the same things. As a result, when someone who values k/d comes into contact with someone who doesn't, neither is going to impress the other, and odds are good egos will need to be protected and appendages measured in order to keep the trash talk from getting too personal. Though, of course, one could always give up the trash talk and trolling... ... though that is most unlikely...
