Raids, do you NEED 6 players to try it?

I've been hearing many different things about this, and my one question is, is it possible for me to ATTEMPT a raid while going solo? Or do I need 5 others in a party to go on a raid. I just want to get this issue cleared up before I get disappointed I can't try raids solo.

No solo, it must be done by 6 players. No random matchmaking, only pair with up your people in your friends list
