Spartans were like war-machines that used tactics that complimented brute-strength, but they were known as just that, not for their morals, honor, skill, or discipline other than their brutal training. Like war-machines, all brawn and some tactics. Samurai were not known for brute-strength, but rather, being some of the best warriors in history due to skill, honor, morals, and discipline. Spartans mowed down their enemies, Samurai walked through their enemies gracefully and honorably.

It's a matter of priorities, really. To me, the enemy's only lifeline should be something of value.

Of course, but I view that as one of the few exceptions. But that's, again, my view, and I have been beaten before by someone who decided to take things slow and ultimately outsmart me. And, similarly, I have done the same, when brute force simply isn't an option.
