Honestly to me, a bosses game play is only a fraction of what makes it good. To me the most important part of a boss is the setting and lead up to the fight. My favorite boss in video games actually come from the zelda series. The boss is very easy to beat but the ambiance and design is so cool you can't help but love it. It is the generically named Death Sword. You go into the room and there is a gigantic sword held in place by about 50 seal tags. You break only one and the rest go up in flames. And he begins to wail on you with his gigantic sword, what's even cooler is he starts invisible and when you use senses to find his true form it looks amazing. I kind of wish they developed him a bit more but oh well.

In some ways it depends, but this is a perfect example of a standard boss fight done right.

No visible health level. Unpredictable attack style. Repeat conflicts. No freaking quicktime button pressing. Work it out for yourself. Use the environment to your advantage - e.g. big-ass boss in front of you, use rocks to climb up and jump on top of them and deal damage to the head from an area the boss cannot defend. It shakes you off, you can either go for the rocks again or try another method.

Depends. A good boss is someone with ideals that are hard to find flaw in, that isn't evil because they want to be. They're antagonistic because the game needs one.

1 ReplyWhat about Metal Gear? They seem to do climatic boss fights.

2 RepliesOne who is understanding, and will allow you to be flexible with your schedule. If they let you off work early sometimes, that's great as well. Some bosses are also very motivational or have interesting stories to share, which is always nice too.

Edited by Charlemagne: 3/3/2013 5:43:19 AMThe main thing i can't stand in a boss fight is if the only "difficult" thing about it is the boss's outrageous amount of health.

2 RepliesI personally hate bosses. I much prefer scenarios that are very challenging. Unfortunately, Halo: CE is the only real instance of this being well done that I know of.

If I don't die at least 3 times, I think it's too easy.

The perfect example of a boss fight, nothing could be quite as skill based as this is.

2 Repliesmy bosses at the cheesecake factory are pretty good. its hard to explain what makes a good boss as there are many ways to be one

3 RepliesEdited by Snowy: 3/3/2013 3:45:45 AMTough and challenging, but beatable on your first try, No trial and error BS required. The best bosses also force you to make use of everything you've learned through playing the game.

Edited by Jim the Jew Lord: 3/3/2013 3:56:13 AMI think that when you fight a boss, you should have a clear understanding of the goal after a few minutes of feeling out the battle. You should be able to beat the boss with skill alone, only a small amount of dice-rolling should come into play(Dark Souls did this excellently, I feel). The boss should represent itself well, meaning like, the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus are all massive for obvious reasons. This doesn't have to do with gameplay, but it makes the atmosphere more enjoyable. If you fail at the others, at least make the boss non-frustrating and unique(The End from MGS 3) EDIT: Oh, and never make bosses feel cookie cutter-ish. Batman: Arkahm Asylum suffered from this problem to an extent.

Having to have your character(s) adapt to stand a chance against it. I encourage punishment to those who think they can cruise through the entire game as one class/weapon

Edited by Setter: 3/3/2013 3:45:36 AMA good challenge with it having different counters than just about all enemies in the game, sometimes have it big so they look even more of a challenge. But they don't have to be big usually have a specific look to them so they scary to fight (like glowing colors, a weapon you haven't seen in the game, etc.) Also having more than one way to defeat it, if there's only one way to beat a boss it will get repetitive fighting it. Oh and they should have lots of health.

Unique dialogue, unique attacks, and lots of minions are just a few things.
