(EDIT: Now that this is trending, id just like to say that the main purpose of this post is to address all of the hate and negativity between users of two very different special weapons with two very different playstyles. Thanks guys)
For a LONG time (mainly since shotguns were nerfed, "coincidentally*) there has been a growing community of anti-sniper vocalists in this community. While this group is annoying to me as a sniper, equally annoying is the group that sadly associates with me: the anti-shotgunners.
Over months of reading through this forum, it has frustrated me to no end see these two groups fight, and it seems to mirror something we see in the modern political sphere: Both sides believe that they are 100% right on 100% of the issues, and they tend to base their opinions often times not on their own personal experiences in life ( or in this case, the game) , but on the opinions of others in their group and very little actual game experience.
In my experience, those who hate on shotgunners are typically the ones who have tried picking up a shotgun, but had very limited success or became frustrated with the high risk of trades and death by primary weapons that come along with using a shotgun. These people see the potential of shotgunning, but cannot master it for themselves. I PERSONALLY find snipers much more suitable for this very reason, especially in 3v3 and elimination where deaths are much more costly to the success of your team. My point? Shotguns take skill, and a lot of it. It isnt the same TYPE of skill (i.e. precision and finesse with a controller) but snipers are definitely much more forgiving and that is why they are my first choice in any elimination game mode.
But wait, shotgunners- youre not off the hook. On the other side, there are the guys who have had the same experience but prefer the fast paced life of a shotgunner. They are percieved as mindless rushers (and some are) but in reality if you let a shotgunner get close enough to kill you before youve killed him with a primary, you deserve it. Its a special weapon. Anyway, I was saying- The group of shotgun fans who always talk shit about sniping are often the ones frustrated by the time it takes to learn decent target acquisition and precision. There is nothing wrong with that, but you CANNOT say that snipers do not take skill.
Please stop spreading this cancer through the community. Both weapon types take plenty of skill, and ill even say it: High impact snipers need body shot damage reduced GREATLY if we ever want a balanced crucible. It is simply too easy to bodyshot primary at the moment.

I feel like snipers like you said need to have less body shot damage. A body shot should take shields off but should not leave you one shot for any primary. While on the other side shotguns need a slight DMG buff. The range is perfectly fine but the damage seems off, I have seen multiple occasion where shots with in melee range dead on there target do not kill the target. A shot gun should always 1 shot with in melee range of the shot is dead on. I run both snipers and shotguns pretty equally over the past 6 to 8 month in this game and do decent with both.

Everyones so elitist on this game. Jesus christ

Nice post. Very civilised. Get an up vote. Erfrideet Spear or Weyloran? What do you think is more ridiculous? 0.4 sec bodyshot TTK or 182 dmg on a bodyshot ?

10 RepliesI use both Shotguns and Snipers (depending on my mood). I must say neither one of them ever needed nerfing. They still do not. People just like to complain about things being "OP" when they can't beat it in any way.

"semi - pro sniper"

Yes you, yes🖒

1 ReplyI'm a sniper also. I don't think shotguns are op. Snipers just have way too much aim assist. They need to put it down from the 60-70 it is now, to 25-30.
-
5 RepliesSnipers don't take skill. Use a high aim assist sniper and you'll see what I mean.
-
Good post man. Finally someone that agrees.
-
3 RepliesAgreed 1000 yd stare arch types should do around 130-145 damage body shots so it requires head shots to finish off the person in 1 shot or 1 burst
-
I don't always agree with the "if you let a shotgunner get that close" statement. There are a lot of factors, just like sniping, like map position, 1v1 or 1v2 etc., and game mode. It's not always as easy as don't let em get that close or stay out of sniper lanes.

I personally don't get killed by snipers too often, but they are generally the reason I avoid 3v3 like trials. I think they mostly take a lot of skill to use, but I haven't given them enough time out of PVE to know for sure. I actually don't usually mind when I get blasted by a shotgun gun because I should've never let them get that close to me. They earned that. Snipers feel a little different to me. There's no engagement there. By their design, they are a campers weapon. They don't inspire movement or engagement, and therefore aren't very fun to me. I really don't think they need to be nerfed into the ground though. I think they should add "sway" if you scope for more then four seconds, and have it on a cool down. And they should also descope after two headshots or three body shots (scout type speaking). That would give primary users a chance and essentially award them for "winning" the engagement.

Each has a different play style in their own right. Shotguns are fast paced, while snipers are nice and slow. All that we need is sniper flinch to be amped up.

body shot with sniper should take 2 shots off any primary to finish them off...... shotties take skill baby cakes... and fluctuating speeds make the task a lot harder. dedicated serves would help immensely

4 RepliesAs a shotgunner, this is spot on. Sniping takes right thumb excellence. You have to be able to aim quickly and accurately. I would just like for the huuuge body shot damage to be toned down (rewards inaccuracy too much) Shotgunning requires you to be able to push your engagements correctly and to be able to move like no other.
-
1 ReplyI'm a really good sniper I have an overall total of 85% precision kills with a sniper, but I've recently tried shotguns and it's not that easy getting a double down or even a triple down you need to be think ahead and know what your plan is going to be when you approach the enemy.

2 RepliesEdited by A Tigerstorm: 8/2/2016 10:05:32 PMPsh. Everyone knows snipers and shotguns don't take skill. FUSION RIFLES TAKE SKILL
-
I agree with OP. Both take skill. Get over it. Snipers have high aim assist and it can be too easy to body shot and switch to primary. Shotguns have crazy range and combined with ANY melee it's a formidable foe. I mainly use a shotgun but as a defensive weapon. I usually fight with primary weapon first. Preferably my Grasp and occasionally a strong hand cannon. On a side note before I receive hate for it, I had a Grasp since month of TTK. Didn't start using it until the April Update. I can still snipe, not nearly as effective as I use to be able to, lost of practice, but I use both. Fusion Rifles do take the most skill by far. Besides Plan C of course.

What about guys who use fusion rifles? We count
-
Just happy snipers don't 1 body shot kill like COD BO
-
4 RepliesShotguns don't take skill. That's why so many players use them. Same with Snipers as of now. Each week in trials is either shotguns or Snipers that dominate based on the map of the week.
-
Use all special weapons frequently, and none are over powered. Body shots don't bother me much either, when we have primarys like grasp and MIDa, you would of did the same amount of damage just as quickly, of not quicker if you're accurate.

2 RepliesI feel it is not about shotgun vs sniper, I think the way Bungie has been rotating the meta is the source of the problem. Limiting special ammo and heavy reduces the fun factor for everyone "What about BALANCE!" you scream at me, I have an answer. What if tactics, foresight and information became the winning factor. Here is how... Add a high resistance and a weakness on armor pieces. For my argument I suggest 3 armor pieces Helmet for Primary Weapon, Boots for Special Weapon and Chest for Heavy Weapon. The resistance must be high enough that the player must quickly switch weapons for a better tactical option let's say time to kill is 5 to 6 seconds for resisted weapons. The armor vulnerability will allow attacks to the back count as precision hits, blasts (rockets and explosive ammunition) increase damage by 20%. a few examples may look like this Helmet High Armor vs Auto Rifles Vulnerable to Scout Rifles Boots High Armor vs Shotguns Vulnerable to Sidearms Chest High Armor vs Rockets Vulnerable to Swords or Helmet High Armor vs Hand Cannon Vulnerable to Pulse Rifle Boots High Armor vs Sniper Rifle Vulnerable to Fusion Rifle Chest High Armor vs Machine gun Vulnerable to Rockets Tired of being killed by snipers armor against it, but it will cost you. At this point you control your own meta and Bungie can increase the amount of reserve and magazine ammunition. From this a wide array of tactics, builds and communication occur. In addition we can see a larger variety of weapons.
