Where to start as a new player

Hi Everyone, First up, I'm sorry as I'm sure this has been asked many times before. But I'm looking at getting in to destiny 2 and struggling to figure out where to start. I've gone through youtube and google, and things are all out dated. Most of them talk about the long grind to get to certain power levels, but after completing the tutorial I'm given a full set of 300 gear. From what I can gather, there is the old expansions still sitting there for free, but not sure there is much point playing those other than for story. It won't progress the character or my gear at all as only the current paid DLC does that? I enjoy playing through story, but not if it's not going to progress my character at all. I guess my end goal is getting to a point where I'm raid ready. I have a group of 6 friends who play online together and raid content would be great for the nights we are all online. So Any tips on where to start, and power up in current state would be greatly appreciated!

  • Start with Beyond Light (think that's the earliest campaign still up) which gets you stasis powers, then Witch Queen (because it's awesome), next Lightfall for strand powers and finally The Final Shape to get prismatic powers and an end to the Light and Dark Saga.

Final shape gets you prismatic Lightfall gets you strand Beyond light gets you stasis. Beyond light is free & you can buy the aspects/fragments with glimmer, short campaign & simple. The other 2 subclasses are very grindy post campaign & can take a while, a few missions are tricky but practice & you're golden - YouTube helps find all the hidden subclass bits & -blam!-. Levelling is basically any portal stuff & nothing else matters, no huge point in levelling though as the higher you get the weaker you become, there's a chest in the tower near zavala that boosts you straight to 300 so prioritise those 3 campaigns first. In a lot of aspects the game has never been better, in others it's never been worse, & the future is honestly unknown, a very low population & almost no support in months from bungie, lots of bugs & issues that never get fixed or taken months, even years to fix, if ever. If you've got friends that's a fantastic start as the community can be very toxic especially in the raid sphere, & you can buy what you need from 3rd party sites like cdkeys for peanuts so you'll get your money's worth for very little outlay, just make progress on something everytime you login or you'll get overwhelmed, don't get bogged down by it & enjoy it. It's a good game but with lots of issues, don't take it seriously & avoid PvP at ALL costs. It's decimated by low population, cheats, elites, awful netcode etc etc & could you off the entire game. YouTube is your best friend in getting through things you get stuck with. The creators did great jobs getting guides out there. Enjoy it & welcone 👍

    • The old expansions aren’t free, but the frequently go on sale for like 10$ for all of them or something crazy. Keep an eye out for the legacy edition bundle The best way to level is doing Portal activities (fireteam ops, pinnacle ops, crucible, etc) I think the Lawless frontier is pretty good too if you own renagades If you’re trying to raid with you friends you don’t need to worry about level, just focus on getting good quality loot. When you’re in a raid everyone is brought up the the light level of the highest team member for that activity

If you're trying to level up and get raid ready as you stated, renegades and the lawless frontier is the most current content and will offer the best rewards. (Plus you get a light saber 😁) However, you will need to play the old campaigns to unlock your subclasses. I would do that first. When you get your power level to 450ish, tier 5 gear will start dropping. At that time I would start looking into learning the Equilibrium dungeon to obtain sage protector armor and weapons like Bitter End. Also, Ferropotent armor and Swords Master armor are good. Each of these armor sets offer 2 piece bonuses. You obtain those from portal activities. Ask your friends what exotics you need and go after those. Some are obtained through exotic missions, some can come from the archive in the tower. Others through dungeons and raids So my opinion: Play through old campaigns to unlock subclasses and prismatic. Then.. Renegades. Equilibrium. Portal activities.

      • Story wise: Witch Queen is the best place to start in the current game for the Light and Darkness Saga. Edge of Fate and Renegades are post Light and Darkness but give current tiered gear.
