Anyone miss the way destiny used to feel

I recently returned after not playing properly for a year and been catching up on the story stuff and does anyone else feel like it’s missing a sort of vibe or feel the way destiny 1 and early days destiny 2 felt. When I think of some of my best memories I think to my first time clearing vog when the max light was 30 and I was stuck at 25 being floored by praetorians and not knowing what the darkness was, just knowing that there was something out there. Even at the end of destiny 1 playing rise of iron and the vibe was still good and there was still so much depth to the game and the stories were interesting but still left a bit of mystery. Then destiny 2 came out and imo it was great I enjoyed the story and how we had to come back from nearly being killed to taking down Gaul, even then I think the game was still good getting the seeds of the traveler to unlock the subclasses for the first time, exploring Edz and Nessus when it has the leviathan in the sky box and the ending to the base game with the triangle ships waking up not knowing what was coming but just knowing the big enemy that’s been spoke about since d1 is on its way. Then starting to see it get. Closer and closer to earth in season of worthy was cool and when it showed up in arrivals, my point is does anyone else miss the way the game used to feel I don’t know if it’s a story change or the execution is worse but I miss the feeling of playing destiny 1

    • It feels like Anthem. Anthem had great scale and concept (and the flight was amazing!) but it felt hollow. This is why I’m so frustrated with Destiny — just like Anthem, it has (had) so much potential. For some reason though, the devs can’t capitalize on it, almost like they’re just coasting on past success. I want to game to succeed, but Bungie’s current direction isn’t good enough.

      • I still play D1 regularly. I much preferred the yearly DLC model, with a few events sprinkled throughout the year.

        • The difference between D1 and early D2 compared to now is the lack of depth in the universe. Because of the narrative mistakes Bungie has made (for whatever reason) it has left the universe feeling flat and with little room for expansion beyond everything we have already seen. While some narratives in D1 and D2 were absolutely -blam!- (CoO, D1 Vanilla) they still made the universe feel bigger than you, and like there was room for us to explore what the universe had to offer. Then starting in Lightfall, all of that intrigue died. We got our first look at a piece of humanity outside of Earth and our first look at something beyond Sol as even the races not original to Sol have made it their residence. And yet, this little factor was so inconsiquential to the story that it has completely killed any intrigue anyone has had for something beyond the Solar System. And now, we’re focusing on the Nine, and suddenly, there’s a whole number of factions popping up like the Exiles (Now with a Kell) and the Imperium who are just more Cabal like Caitals Ascendancy, the Red Legion, and the Shadow Legion (which are also inconsequential. Thanks Lightfall.) Unlike other reskins and variants, these enemies do nothing to make the world feel bigger. Nothing! IM MORE INTERESTED IN THE VEX WITH CLOTHES THAN I AM THE NEW CABAL FACTION THAT HAVE TIES TO THE MAIN PLOT OF THIS WHOLE SAGA! Why?! Bungie has failed at making the world big, and as a result, the only thing holding this game together is Gameplay. Even Witch Queen managed to make the world feel bigger with our first look into the Witness, the Disciples, and everything in between. Bungie had routes they could take after the death of the witness before immediately shoving us right into our next saga. They could have focused on the Guardian, Vanguard, and everyone in between securing the Solar System, while alluding to what’s happening to the Nine. We sort of see this happen in Heresy, where Eris is vying to gain control of the Echo of Navigation as a means by which we could travel the Ascendant Plain beyond just the Ley Lines. We see this with the events of Vespers Host, where we have a minor event that connects us to the events of Edge of Fate. Bungie could have made us encounter other Disciples, reeling from the defeat of the Witness and trying to stake their claim in the universe, or have us fight Bad Lightbearers before we introduce this whole Starwars bullcrap. All we ask for is a little set up to the events of the world to give people the time to decompress after saving the Universe and to hook people into what the New Saga is presenting. Bungie has -blam!- yo because they killed off or have defeated most of the enemy factions that were present back in D1, leaving the races that are left as either small groups that pose no threat, or as allies. There are no more scorn enemies. There are no major cabal or fallen factions beside some asspull Bungie does. The Vex have been consistently weak besides the Vex that Maya has and that’s because of the Echo of Control. The Taken got a resurgence, and there is a supposed God for them, but that takes time to brew (a good thing, but feels bad right now). The Hive have Xivu Arath, but at this point, we just bully her. There is also Savathune, but we had a tenuous alliance with her, and she’s old news at this point. At least in Final Shape, she had some value and intrigue, as we felt threatened by her presence. Cause we didn’t know what she would do with the Traveler, and more importantly, PRISMATIC. Oh, oh, and speaking of Prismatic, has that at all been acknowledged lore wise after the events of Final Shape? At least Strand has some acknowledgment in its relevance to Osiris and the fact that it’s the other Darkness Subclass, but Prismatic? That was game changing and yet nobody makes a peep about it. We even have the Echoes, whose whole design motif is based around Prismatic, so why don’t we seen the Guardian interact in strange ways to these Echoes? Huh?! -blam!- Bungie.

          • Yeah most of us do, they have killed 80% of the game, removed as much fun as they can from it. The game is now a grind, so much is locked behind higher level content which a lot of us don't have the time of skill to do. It used to be so nice to jump on for a bit, do strikes, complete pathfiner and bounties for a bit of fun. The game now is only about being forced into doing higher and higher ops, I am at 400 but not interested in doing grandmaster ops at all. Bungie have bet the whole game on forcing the grind, hoping it will keep players coming back but look at the numbers already a quarter of the launch of EOF. Unless Bungie undo the grind and the op levels and rewards the game will be dead, but that maybe what they want knowing Sony is about to step in and takeover.

            • I think the new story is interesting and fairly well done. Nothing is ever going to recreate that feeling of the original story though. Not unless they did something with the winnower. The nine being the central part of the story is actually pretty smart because they are one of the only things that are huge mysteries still.

There was this feel that Destiny had, so much mystery and excitement for what was to come. There were points where you would discover hidden locations with cool loot, or you stepped into the wrong neighbourhood as you saw enemies with question marks above their heads, and they would one shot you. The feeling when you got that one piece of strike specific loot you've been dying to get. When Gjallarhorn or Icebreaker dopped, and it was amazing! Just knowing that you got a gun that made others jealous because of how good it really was. I miss those things.

                • Whatever this game is now, it's not Destiny. This went from a Gen x developed game to a millennial game, and it's failing as hard as it's competitors now. It's more agenda and posturing than it is an actual functioning game.

                • Yes as for someone who has played from about 2 months into d1 it’s not the same, it’s lost it’s ⚡️loot just doesn’t seem worth it, not special enough. And it’s just to arcade game now “ insert coins to play” feeling.

No issue Playing “The Final Shape” (maybe a few tuning on PvP)….but dang, D2: TEOF (DLC) knock out half of the player count. 40k last year. 20k this year.
