Will Destiny's Legacy be a franchise of Missed Opportunities?

Loved playing Destiny since it was released back in 2014. As a shooter there's no game out there with better gunplay and feel. That has been the main attraction for many who value that over the wealth of well-written Lore that accompanies it.....Sadly, "accompany" is the extent it is implemented into the games. For example; Before Beyond Light and Season of the Hunt was released we had a new lore update on this website to read. Osiris investigating enemy races being brainwashed by Xivu Arath, in an attempt to create her own enthralled army. Sagira was destroyed trying to save Osiris' life as he attacked a Hive Royalty get-together (Ritual) Decent read, but could Bungie not have improved this by forgetting about the story alone and widely unread, and create an extended cutscene of the event, thus setting up the Season with a bit of added excitement and peril? Had it been secretly shown to us when logging into the beginning of the Season it would have had a tremendous impact. There's another real issue for me. This is good Vs evil endgame stuff, and at no time do I ever feel in danger. The system is being invaded by the ancient enemy of the Light, and I'm asked to bake cookies.....cookies. There's no sense of doom on the horizon, and the in-game story is just so widely disconnected from the amazing lore that Bungies writers have created. Many players out there I'm sure couldn't give a toss about lore. They just want to shoot stuff. But they're not really being given the in-game means to learn why they're on a specific planet to kill a specific boss, for example. Each season I just found myself saying that they missed another great chance to show, not tell. Thats always been my main gripe with the franchise. And I put it down to laziness overall. I think their writers and Lore-creators need a bit more respect, and the opportunity to deepen the waters of a very shallow game.

  • Meh. The formula gets stale, but it's been a pretty successful franchise. Though pretty inconsistently, there's no game that I've played as long as Destiny. I think a LOT of players could say the same.

Brings back Undying but does not bring back Imago Loop. Has strike specific loot, but only in nightfalls but not in Scarlett Keep, not Festering Core, not in Glassway... never got skeleton keys to guarantee drops. Brings Factions to D2 but had to reinvent the wheel and give us a limited faction rally event instead of the pledge to a faction system we had in D1. Mess it up so bad that removing factions completely was their only way out. Give us a Trials of the Nine themed Dungeon that rewards Trials of the Nine themed armor but give us Widow's Bite, Hoosgow, Death Adder, and Ikelos instead of Trials of the Nine weapons. Easy Bake Oven and Fed-Ex simulator instead of SRL during the Dawning Make us grind the same sets of Iron Banner armor 3 times for each set and no new weapons in 3 years. As much D1 content we've been getting, where is Clever Dragon ect? (We got Felwinters Lie) but where is the better looking D1 IB armor? Armor 2.0 in Leviathan raids but the static rolled weapons never got random rolls. Remove 5 older raids instead of bringing them to current power level and making them relevant with rotating weekly raid challenges like we got in D1. Instead of remastering D1 and releasing it to PC and next gen consoles as a stand alone game with 4k 60fps, ledge grab, dodge/rift/barricade... they removed most of D2 to bring D1 into D2. In D1 if you were Warlock class, you would pick up vanguard bounties from Ikora, Titan to Zavala, Hunter to Cayde. In D2, Ikora has been pointless 99% of of the game and they killed off Cayde and never replaced him or brought him back as Cayde 7. These are my examples, my opinions... Nobody said you have to agree

      • Destiny 1 died horribly because of bad decisions on bungies part by listen to the wrong people. Destiny comes along breaths fresh air into the game in trying to make it not destiny 1. But third dlc in the game reverts everything back to destiny 1 because of listening to the wrong people. Now the game has gotten worse every single update every single “season” and everyone who continues to play this game is lying to themselves. The game is not fun and hasn’t been for awhile now. Everyone who continues to play the game as if bungie has not screwed up is not helping the game or the community. So no the game won’t be a franchise. It will die with destiny 2 since bungie “is not making” a destiny 3 and destiny 2 is apparently a cash cow piece of crap. That’s my word on it with it being on point to the topic.

      • I missed when saving the world or stopping the darkness meant something, now it's just repetitive and boring in a way. I understand that's the whole story but like I don't feel like we accomplished anything anymore. Ever since they killed Cayde off the game just lost it feel.

        • Since it's release, I feel this game is just one disappointment after another. Building up to release, I had envisioned what I thought the game would be like, and hyped myself up. Upon release, I was a little let down (especially the ending. I was speechless with that black garden/heart/whatever) but still optimistic. This was bungies game, their vision. I'd have to give them a shot. Since then, it just seems like they take one step forward, two stumbling steps to the left, three steps back and then fall down a set of stairs forgetting everything they just did. I feel like they have no clue what they want with this game. It had such a drastic change in direction with the release of destiny 2, and even though destiny 1 had it's problems (those content droughts...) I feel like D1 had a great leaping point for them, and they just dove into a dumpster instead of soaring to the sky. I think a lot of people's trust has been tested over the years with bungie. Personally, I'm dissapointed in the lack of anything new/substantial. Hell, we still don't even have a new enemy race since the game began. We've fought the fallen in what, 3 different variations now? Mars had "frozen" hive. The moon had "nightmare" enemies. Same enemies being shot with the same guns in the same locations. Sometimes they were a different color. It just seems like they really don't care, and probably haven't for awhile. So to answer your question, yes. I feel like this game will eventually fade away as a sad disappointment of missed opportunities that missed the mark one too many times.

        • It really feels that way most of the time. Make no mistake, no game is ever perfect or fully lives up to its potential. However it feels like Destiny is always falling short of its potential significantly. From story to loot it almost always feels like Destiny is missing the mark. It’s what makes being a fan of the game so frustrating.

Maybe. Until the game’s end of life it’s hard say. For many the game has been and still is the benchmark for a solid live service game. The game hasn’t really been remarkable, amazing or abysmal. It neither saw the pop culture defining success of a World of Warcraft, or has been so bad it will be known as one of the worst games ever made, like a Superman 64. It’s not even as lackluster as games like Anthem or Avengers. Destiny 2 doesn’t even have the most egregious micro-transaction store. Some us may remember the missed opportunities, but I don’t think that will be its overall legacy. Especially for a title that some of us have already played for 6+ years and will keep playing. And for a title that has seen many “Destiny killers” come and go that never rose to Destiny’s heights in terms of players, player engagement, and even reception.

Hubris! That's the Legacy that they wanted to create and to leave behind from the very beginning! I remember an article a long time ago before D1 came out that they wanted this franchise to sit alongside other franchises like Star Wars. That's Hubris right there! I think Star Wars is now the most successfully created franchise of all time. It's become a Cult Classic that will never die, as long as Disney and Disneyland is in business. The Star Wars franchise will live long. For a long, long time. Star Wars franchise is a Cult Classic. Destiny franchise is nothing but just a Clique. Star Wars became what it is now because it is truly special. It is still special. Star Wars got it's status now because it is special and it wasn't pushed. It just happened. Destiny on the other hand feels pushed. A try-hard. Everything about it is pushed. It's status is being pushed by the makers before it even came out. Now the gameplay is pushed. Bounties feels pushed. Even the guns and gear are being pushed. Exotics are pushed. And my favorite, out of game merchandises are being pushed. 😂 So superficial and unnatural. Star Wars merchandise was a hot commodity on Christmas time all over the world when it first came out. It's the toy you've got to have at that time. Destiny merchandise isn't. It will never be at that status like Star Wars. No matter how they push it. Soon, there is a rumor that maybe supers will be reworked and also pushed into how you play the game. Everything about Destiny is being pushed in your life.😂😂😂 That's why it will never reach the status of other franchises like Star Wars. Heck, no! Not even close. Star Wars is a Cult Classic! Destiny is nothing but a Clique. That's gonna be it's legacy. And of course a bearded dwarf and some Fairies in "Fantasy Land!" 😂

            • Destiny has always had potential and it could have been one of the base games out to date. Arrogance, greed, and stubbornness have gotten in the way of what this game was mean to become. The idea of becoming a Guardian and what a Guardian is today is far gone. Everything this company needs to improve this game to head it down the right path is right in front of their eyes. Why they are ignoring it is beyond me.
Each season I just found myself saying that they missed another great chance to show, not tell. That's always been my main gripe with the franchise.
If they build it into the game, it becomes written in stone. If it accompanies the game, it can be changed without a need to change the game. Bungie/MS ignored a multi-$billion opportunity to create a series of science fiction movies that would have rivaled the best. Imagine the increase in revenue when leading a game release with a Cameron/Jackson-produced full length movie. Imagine the impact of sharing and cross-pollination of just the CGI creation... It could even surpass the Marvel movies in revenue. While I don't think the Destiny story (as a movie) is as compelling as Halo could have been, it could still be huge. Back in the day, a few well-known and famous writers and directors volunteered to work for little to nothing if they could write and direct/produce a Halo movie. Even Peter Jackson wanted to be involved. Such a tragic lost opportunity...

Our guardians life could fall anytime the darkness wants it to but ur right we are making f'ing cookies.how cool would it be if the further the planet was from the traveler the darker everything got.

              • how scary are the hunts.. even below power they took longer to kill the servator at the original lure spot, then the boss every did. Hell the travel time to get to the boss of the hunt takes longer.. a big waste of time when 3 seconds later the boss is dead.. And then you have the final knight lol.. and we are told.. kill it slower bahahaha so much peril there. Huge disconnect between story in game, lore and story outside of game and how it connects to our actual game play.
