I still enjoy d1 more than d2, even to this day

Despite all the hours I’ve put into d2, I still have a huge feeling of emptiness playing this game that I never felt playing d1. I saw a post on Reddit the other day saying d2 is a better game than d1, and personally I couldn’t disagree more. D1 to me was so much more FUN. There was no superficial seals, extreme monetisation through eververse, fomo, no bounty overkill disguised as seasons. The original game was designed to be a game, which is supposed to be fun and players having fun. You played the game on your terms, as and when it pleased you to do so. Somewhere along the way this has changed with Destiny 2. It became way more hardcore to the point where they employ people from the gambling industry to make their game more addictive. The game is now designed with the intention of it being a job and over time it’s slowly sucks the fun out of the game and my soul along with it with its artificial endless grind. Anyway, this is my opinion and that’s how I’ve been feeling for some time. I’m fatigued by the game being a full time job and I’d actually like there to be content droughts, especially when the content (seasons) isn’t really content at all. That way the game wouldn’t feel like the checklist chore it is today and it might start to feel like it’s as good as the original.

  • D1 armor is 1000000x's more appealing. Raid amor looked or still looks sick on all toons. The Spektar Titan armor made my Titan look like Iron Man, with SRL shaders. Wish we could re-aquire it in D2. Thundercrash + Spektar chroma armor= Mark-ll Iron Man.

  • Couldn't agree more. I want to play a game, not feel like I'm living a lifestyle. I like D2, but I really stopped having fun a few seasons ago. I play because I'm more concerned about missing out on things. The more I miss out on, the less likely I am to come back. I can't event begin to consider preordering or buying the next DLC. I want to experience other games. I feel Destiny no longer allows for that, if you want to experience all the game has to offer. After this season (because I've paid for the pass), I'm probably going to let Destiny go. I've enjoyed the game for years. But, it just doesn't bring anything new to the table that makes me excited to play anymore.

Destiny 1 Summary D1 was designed like a traditional looter shooter rpg like you would expect it to be where you had a customizable skill tree and random rolled loot, but the rng drove people to complain on forums for years demanding quests etc because the grind sucked. Raids had unique legendaries and exotics that RNG made it hard to get in many cases, but on average people enjoyed the raids on 1 and most of us had different favorites. People also spent years complaining about balance among other things and that leads us to the problem child. Destiny 2 Summary: D2 was designed to be what everyone wanted it to be and also what everyone asked for, which means no one was happy about it. It was designed to be a place where everyone could do quests to get their perfectly balanced weapons where nothing was better than anything else. It was designed so you could have 2 whole choices with your subclass, because balance says you can’t have more than 2 choices in an rpg unless an expansion adds a third a year later, which again is for balance. Naturally we need something to grind for since everyone was given all the loot they wanted with no effort, which is power. Now we need to grind for power fighting RNG from hell that everyone reads about on forums for people raging about that 9th kinetic pinnacle in a row, which mind you is time gated content. Mind you this power doesn’t make you strong like in d1 where you crush enemies when you are more powerful, but if you lack it they crush you. Power level is more accurately described as “not underpowered” in d2. Problems with process: D1 gated us out of getting guaranteed drops immediately, but consistent play would eventually give it to you and you would have the satisfaction of having it. D2 set a scheduled power grind with RNG that is not fun because you are higher light and only get the “not underpowered” status for it, which is not being stronger. On D1 we got stronger while on D2 we get “not underpowered” and I think most of us can agree that getting stronger is the point of an RPG right along with customization and trying out new builds. RPG’s have skill trees not 3 nodes, which destiny has and that leads us to next problem. Problems with armor drops: RPG’s have set armor or random rolled armor drops and ability to craft equipment that is different from the droppable variety, which destiny 2 took a middle ground on and didn’t add traditional random drops with perks, but rather cool down reduction and “craft able” perks, which is okay and a decent way to do it, but lacking in both forms. The problem is it mostly makes grinding for armor a matter of cosmetic preference since getting the cool downs you want in both type and correct total is arguably the worst possible tier of RNG with low reward or value since you are playing with percents on multiple things when we could just have random rolled perks with something that offered 8-20% cool down reduction across the board instead of pure number RNG on multiple stats, which just makes everything tedious to manage when all people want is a basic cool down reduction. This wasn’t as bad in D1 because mobility, resilience, recovery were tied to subclass rather than armor, but adding these to armor just added another rng tier to armor that doesn’t really add anything to the game. Problems with the weapon drops: After destiny 2 reversed course on the forum warriors request for balance that led to static rolls at launch we finally got random rolls back, which were both less valuable and less customizable from what we had in 1. For most of D1 we had a set of 2 perk columns much like what recaster has where you can toggle between perks(I don’t remember how many, but know we had more than 1 perk on legendaries to choose from). Additionally these perks were pulled from a loot pool for most of the game and what this meant was it allowed any combinations of perks from the loot pool. This admittedly caused some bugs like rocket launchers getting triple tap, which was hilarious for a time. This added what I would call customization hell where that one legendary you wanted could come in hundreds of varieties, which gave you more to grind for. D2 has 2 perk columns and each have separate perk pools, which dramatically cuts down on “random rolls” from what we had in 1 and even what they do have is mostly limited to 1 perk in each column with exception of recaster giving you that extra perk node. This perk pool structure in 1 allowed us to get truly unique setups if you played long enough, which made the grind for guns fun because they could come from most anywhere and not having a perk wasn’t crippling even though it wasn’t quite what you wanted. Problems with raids: D1 raids were relatively varied and many of us had different likes and dislikes about them and various favorites, but for the most part they could all be called a team effort minus most of the plate mechanics. D2 raids are set up such that at any given point your team is operating entirely separately, which typically means each person is required to perform perfectly at whatever they are doing due to team wipe mechanics. This is problematic for the casuals, but it’s not the majority of the problem that D2 has with raids. D2 has created a “scheduled” power grind where people have bullet point list items to hit each week to hit max power, which translates to a schedule on the weekly basis that they must follow down to the hour and minute. From a community perspective this means that no one has time to waste in the raid working with someone who doesn’t know what they are doing since they need to move onto the next bullet item to hit max power. We all know the enemies you kill in the raid aren’t going to raise that power level or drop you an exotic, because why would the game reward you well for playing it? This means if you look at fire team finder in our very own destiny app you will see every raid post says “kwtd” and I read that as “I’m on a schedule and don’t have time to waste.” On destiny 1 I ran some raids with friends as a Sherpa, but on D2 I can’t even stand the raids and obviously people on fire team finder aren’t much bigger fans since they are following the schedule and not playing for fun. TLDR: D1 was a quest for something fun to use and most everything in game could drop it. D2 is a quest for being “not underpowered” and only certain weekly tasks can provide that.

You people romanticize D1 so much. Remember your content droughts? Course not. Remember when legendary engrams turned to blues? Nah Remember when exotics turned to legendaries? Why would you? Remember how disconnected the story was? Yea? Oh.. you meant no That game has sunsetting, remember? You don't remember? Pepperidge farm does. It had micro transactions But let's not mention that right? Remember the bounties? Oh but those are D1 bounties right? But hey at least you liked that one aspect of the game right? Cause that one good thing was an indictment of the game.

        • Did I enjoy D1 more then D2? Absolutely yes. But that applies to most sequels, I throughly enjoyed Diablo 2 over Diablo 3. Mass Effect 1 was better then Mass Effect 2. Morrowind was better then Oblivion which was better then Skyrim. That said even though D2 is missing some stuff the D1 had I feel overall D2 is the better game. Still didn’t enjoy it as much though

          • I loved d1 it was amazing and I feel like d2 is a good game too at times but it has flaws just like d1 did in the beginning and at the end. Take your pick neither of them is entire great or awful for everyone who says d1 is just better true it was but it was also the first game so it had a better feel to it because bungie never intended for destiny to get a sequal d2 was Activisions idea. But d2 happened it anyway and it fixed issues d1 had but also brought in new ones to deal with (bad shader system, reused exotics, and cheaters) Sequal are never better than the original but that doesn't mean they're complete trash either. Designer's tend to go all out in their first creation of a new series to get the story off the ground. But it was flawed just like d2 is. Hell some issue are still the same talking about content drought, boring story moments, and ugh eververse. So it really just about the same either way both are broken and it just depends on your opinion in the end. I did everything in d1 and in d2 and the raids where just better in d1 but how can you top that in d2 I mean come on they just kind of recycled d1 into d2 anyway but thats different argument altogether.

                • For me, there something about Destiny 2 that always felt a little ”off”. Content wise, Destiny 2 runs laps around Destiny 1, but Destiny 1 feels more like a game ( something created by gamers, for gamers ), and Destiny 2 feels more like a product created by marketing execs, psychologists, and people chasing profits, instead of making something fun.

                  • I agree with you on that! D2 isn't Destiny. To me, it feels like an expensive Beta and the fun factor's been excluded. D1 had a unique feel to it and grinding wasn't such a chore as it is in D2. I don't know what Bungie's thinking about but, hopefully they'll stop trying to fix what ain't broke so to speak. Cause, "Ain't nobody got time for that!!!" 🙄

                  • There are some quality of life things in D2 that are better but somehow the D2 pvp is just miserable garbage that isn't fun (Destiny pvp was garbage but still managed to be fun) and the loading times on D2 are inexcusable in a modern game. Factions need to come back like destiny Y3 along with arms day. Actually just turn on all the things currently shut off in Destiny and I'd play that more (Iron Banner, Sparrow racing, public events, etc...)
