Unlocking Achievements for High Schoolers?

TL;DR As a math and comp sci teacher, I'd like to know the best strategies for using achievement/triumph badges in a high school setting effectively that reward the repetitive nature of good character and academic growth or achievement in a way that is rewarding for the students and efficient for the teacher. I feel that Bungie does this really well and I am asking them and the community for ideas about this. Although my content may not be as exciting as an epic galactic throw-down for the survival of humanity, Calculus might feel that dire at times. All of my students do awesome things at some level (crushing a test, showing up, giving a compliment), and I'd like to give them a chance to be recognized for it in a fun and unique way. ******** I am a math and comp sci teacher at a public high school. I also have grown up playing video games and have found my favorites to be from Bungie's Halo and Destiny games. Not only am I compelled by the game design, artwork and stories, but I also enjoy unlocking achievements. Whether it is tenacity tasks (repeating an action for a certain amount of times) or a skill-based achievement, I feel that Bungie has a way of keeping the game relevant and rewarding by having these Triumph awards/badges that acknowledge the player's time commitment and/or ability. I am asking for ideas on how to implement these concepts into a classroom setting that the students can buy in to and is not too cumbersome for me to track and keep up with. This idea of gamification has been floating around education pedagogy for many years now but has not really caught on. This generation of students has more gamers than any other before them. The gaming club at our school is one of the most popular and even those that don't consider themselves as gamers still value game-like achievements (they will do anything to keep their SnapChat streaks going). In researching the psychology of the badge reward systems and the successes and failures of trying to implement this, I wanted to reach out to Bungie and its community for ideas on how to get started in a way that is not frustrating for me but, more importantly, engaging for the students. I have rewarded achievements before by generic things like tracking perfect attendance or posting up perfect papers on the "Wall of Fame". But most kids do not fall into these categories but should be rewarded for their hard work and small successes, not just the big ones. Several online platforms offer digital badges that are customizable but I am not sure that that is the best route because of how hidden or remote those badge displays seem to a user. Using this reward/recognition system should allow for students to consistently see what the badges are for and how to achieve them. Here are some questions I have on how to set up a system that the students would be invested in and proud to look at or show off: Should they be digital or displayed on a bulletin board in the classroom? If the bulletin board method is used, I was thinking of using different name associations so people wouldn't know whose badges belong to who (unless they wanted to share it) and whenever the unlocked an new achievement they got to color it in themselves. How many achievements should there be for a semester class? Should they be tiered achievements? Should I take the Bungie approach and have witty names and secret achievements too? Are there any other games that have fun achievements that keep the game engaging throughout endgame? Are there any other resources that would be beneficial to getting more ideas or information on this?

on tests, tell them that every point under 100 equals one broken finger so if jimbo gets a 95, he has to choose which hand he likes the least punishment > reward

    • Achievement Unlocked You didn't fail Seriously though, grades are the unlockable achievements. Hanging artificial awards on doing their work or test scores may motivate some, but I doubt it will make any affect on most. Not unlike in games, if there is an achievement that requires me to do something I don't want to, I ain't doing it. When I was in school, if I didn't like the class, I didn't do anymore than I had to to get through it, and get out of there. I will add that how the teacher teaches means EVERYTHING in getting students to participate, care, or try. So making a 'wall of fame' will likely only be a carrot on a string to those who make a point of being teacher's pet, or the brainiacs who were going to get an A anyhow, but don't expect the majority of the class to care. Then again, this is the view of a guy who's been out of school longer than most here have been alive. I just know that what I experienced, and talked with my sons about in their high school years is that unless the course of study means something to you, and you are not being forced to take something that you will likely never use throughput your adult life, no amount of tempting or prodding is going to change that. But for all of us, having a teacher that made the class fun and understandable makes a world of difference. My algebra teacher knew the subject, and basically expected us to all know it as well. His teaching style was as cold as a dead penguin, and I still don't understand the subject at all. Good News though! Never once in my adult life did algebra nor the metric system (something else they tried pounding into our heads) become a need for me to know.

A couple folks where I work definitely play this game and I can't confirm they don't use this forum. 🤔 That's a position I haven't been in before. What I can say is that we did a competency based thing that worked pretty well. Edit: Hidden, Gold Trophy (so playstation)
Welcome to the PCMR. Aced the final.
I think this has potential to be successful. In order for these to feel like an achievement, students need to be invested in the system and the class or they`re just going to feel like an added bonus to having good grades or mean nothing to those who don`t. People don`t go on snapchat just for streaks, they do it for to talk with friends, streaks are an added bonus. Students who choose to willfully not care will always do so, I`m not sure much can be changed about that. So before any of this is implemented, you need to create an environment where students want to get the rewards.

Whatever you do, don’t make it look like you’re trying too hard. I’ve seen too many classrooms with signs that say something like “To get that epic Victory Royale, always brush your teeth before going to bed!” Or something similar. But, since you are on Bungie.net, you should be fine. Go for it!

                • Put a grid up on the wall, left side a list of "Classtags" (students can pick their own classtags like a gamertag) and a series of achievements along the top. Give achievements point values (like a gamerscore). The classtags will allow them to share who they are if they want (they will) or remain anonymous (but let's face it, this'll never happen, even if they wanted it to). Post the top 5 Classtags along with their current total points. For added fun, add an "in game shop" where students can spend their points. Something like "+10 points on an assignment" or "all mistakes half-off on any non-exam". Give each prize different values. This should keep the high ranking students motivated to keep up progress and but low ranking students a reason not to give up earning them. It also means there's a trade off, use up points and risk your rank or bring that 70 up to an 85 using the half-off perk. Also, add secret achievements. Don't tell students how they aquired them when they do. They'll work together to try and figure out what they are once a few students have them, as well as try to figure out what the remaining secret achievements might be. Make some easy but fun and not necessarily material related like "Say 'Thank You' when the teacher hands back an assignment," "Greeted the Teacher when you entered the room," "Asked three questions in a single lesson," or "Held the door for someone." You can also allow score-streaks (like killstreaks). Each time they score the same or higher than they did on the previous assignment, they add a score to their streak. Give points when they reach certain lengths in their streak. Allowing the same score rather than only higher scores gives them a reason to maintain them rather than reset them at high scores. You could even add an achievements such as "Score-streak of 5 over 95%"
