I recently realized the actual horrors of war
It always came to me in a different feel. But after talking to my grandpa about Vietnam it makes me hope I don't have to get drafted into a war. The stories he told me sounded awful
The enemy holds no respect for you or your wishes. The weak are relentlessly tortured and crushed by the strong. No wonder why war veterans don't come back the same. Both physically and mentally

My grandfather left his medals behind when moving to NZ and never once talked about the war. Real hard ass kinda guy so whatever happened must of been pretty disgusting for him to completely disown what ever happened. Wish he lived longer so I could of picked his brain when I got a bit older.

I was in the Army for 4 years but thankfully under Clinton and out before Bush/Cheney started Afghanistan and Iraq. My grandfather fought in WWII and told us some -blam!-ed up stories about fighting overseas and one of the death camps he saw. He also said when it was near the end of the war there would be places where walking into the town pretty much every light post had a body hanging from it. Captured Allied soldiers, people who were in the camps.....

War is horrific. Take D-day for example, watching footage like that is scary.

It's understandable to see why a couple of my veteran friends didn't like their time in the military since they were all deployed overseas and saw their battle buddies die in front of them. They also realize that because of Basic, the military lifestyle, and the things they saw overseas, their lives will never be peaceful again. War sucks, definitely. It never determines who is right, only who is left after all the fighting is done.

Had a neighbor that had to go behind enemy lines during WW2. Not only were the enemy lines in Germany, but he was also Jewish. So he had to leave his dogtags behind because they had the Star of David on them.
