TLDR … removing sbmm negatively impacts the experience of the vast majority of players resulting in low player retention.

Peer to peer connections and crossplay negatively impacts the experience of the vast majority of players…

7 RisposteYeah, one article from activision definitely proves SBMM is good. You know, the same company that has patented the more money you spend on the game the more accurate your guns are, and people only found out after a lawsuit. Yeah… I DEFINITELY trust that company. Oh yeah, let’s forget about the time Fortnite tried SBMM and reverted it, let’s forget about the time Halo tried SBMM and reverted it, let’s forget about the time CoD tried SBMM and reverted it, let’s forget about Destiny 2 launch and SBMM and how they reverted it… twice. Yeah none of that is relevant, this ONE article from activision (the extremely trust worthy company) is correct. Clown.

Its all about the implementation of it. Not an easy thing to get dialled in but when its done right its by far the better system.
-
Yep. It's settled. If you take the time to get good at a pvp game, you wasted your time, and your experience will be worse for it. Stay trash, everyone.
-
Bro thats for cod, where weapon ttk is instant, player movement is ridiculous and things are more cheesy than destiny.
-
2 RisposteSadly. But in this low population, SBMM actually hurts the game. It was an interesting read, but it is too late for strict sbmm. This means I'll never touch pvp on this game outside getting my IB title each season.
-
COD has the player base for it. Destiny doesn’t

4 RisposteIt seems like Bungie is going the other direction again, as there is no more SBMM, or variant of it, left in the PVP list this week. Going back to the shitty old days of CBMM... If SBMM is completely removed going forward I will stop playing this game, as I had enough of playing against cheaters, flawless or unbroken lately
-
1 RispondiSweats just wind up playing each other anyway, CBMM is a self fulfilling prophecy
-
19 RispostePeople never let facts or game population health get in the way of their desire to farm easier players
-
Who would've thought that giving everyone fair games would increase playtime. What a concept 🤯. If the sweats hate facing other sweats, then well, welcome to our perspective.

5 RisposteAn yet having done the research of how SBMM works in Destiny. I've never seen such a joke of a system. Per example. If you're the 3.0 in one team your team mates will not be. They will be 1.0's or less. While the system in it's infinite wisdom. Will give your opponents 3x 2.0s or better. You can circumvent the issue by stacking but then you upset everyone who can't make friends. SBMM doesn't do what you believe it does. It screws everyone equally an that's about it. Unless you're the bottom of the bottom. It will not benefit you.
-
This is talking about Call of Duty. Massive playerbase. Dedicated servers. Extremely low TTK. Has nothing in common with Destiny.
-
There is no more SBMM. The population is gone. All that’s left is the hard core PvP players now. I’ve been matching the same players over and over. There are no relaxed modes now.
-
And yet the most loved/played time of pvp didn't have sbmm, weird.
-
I’ll play CBMM, SBMM and RBMM. They all have their benefits and the game mode is a more important factor for me anyway. The only thing I avoid is no team balancing (Trials), but I’m glad it’s there for the people who enjoy that.
-
There's no issue with CBMM if there's FREELANCE modes.

I have some issues with the report, less its conclusion and more how it got there. This was actually longer than I wanted, so I'm going to put it in a spoiler to lessen the scrolling.
You can't look at PvP in an analytical way because it in itself is a variable. Time of day, game age, meta, etc. Looking at cod, you have several variables like perks, weapons, weapon attachments, and kill streaks. Most people in the community will label various bits of the sandbox as "pure cheese" and "overpowered". Just as the destiny PvP community does. This takes away from talk of skill be sure the question gets raised: "Are they actually good, or just abusing an OP strat?" Lastly, you can't quantify fun. This should be evident, especially to destiny. Look at raids and dungeons pre-final shape. Pre-FS some enjoyed the level of difficulty while others hated it for being too easy/hard. Post-FS with the -5 delta, the people who thought it was too hard simply stopped playing, those who liked it before complained, and those who wanted to be harder were happy. You can't please everyone, and the same can be said about PvP. Some people play for the sake of PvP and enjoy the game win or lose. Others obviously want to stomp and feel good. Then there are those (like myself) who just want to progress challenges, bounties, etc. Skill based matchmaking affects those trying to progress because those challenges often require off meta or unfamiliar weapon or ability usage. Taking a (maybe dated, haven't aged in years) look at cod, in order to unlock camos you had to use weapons and then do specific things with those weapons. Such as get kills streaks, double kills, etc. For off meta or just plain bad weapons, these challenges were just frustrating, but they also lowered a players skill rating. So when they go back to what they were used to, they stomped and felt like a god. It creates very different hills and valleys of performance that takes a good while to even back out.
2 RisposteHopefully lots more sbmm… bungie must support and protect their casual playerbase

3 RispostePure CBMM is difficult to maintain in a game as old as Destiny. All the more casual players have moved on; which leaves only the people who play Crucible regularly. This creates an issue for newer players as they have nowhere to go and are just fed to the regulars. This makes Crucible unwelcoming for new players so they stop playing and the regulars start to cannibalize themselves.

Modificato da Kiro - 13: 7/28/2024 12:03:25 PMObviously grading players on a curve is going to be favorable to the average person & encourage player retention. Using a round robin type system or a MMR seeded system pushes every one but the top 10% out and is only viable for a for-profit company as an "exhibition" to generate public interest.
-
1 RispondiWell COD actually has servers, not some Franken-Mess Hybrid non dedicated Server - Peer to Peer networking hodgepodge. Basically they are using a modified version of the Halo 3 network coding model, except they added 2 commodore 64's for Server support. Combine that with low population numbers and then matching that tosses anyone from any country into the same match (both of which make Peer to Peer an even bigger laggy mess) , and this is what we've experienced for the past 5 to 10 years.

3 RisposteExcellent Article! An enjoyable read with my morning coffee. Great emphasis on how neglecting skill causes lower skilled players to leave a game or game mode can heavily impact the best players in the game. The article explains very well why so many players never touch PVP in this game; they tried it and left the mode. In short, Bungie does not use any of this and could learn a lot from this PVP team. Neglecting skill in PVP MM is the main cause of low player population and retention. Neglecting skill in MM causes and increase in quitting, imagine that.

19 RisposteRight. A white paper, non-peer reviewed, straight from the company store, must be the last word on the topic. Looking forward to actually reading this critically. You guys realize paid research like this is *slightly* problematic right?????

3 RisposteThe only way to actually prove which is the way to go is to vote for matchmaking preference. You can vote as many times as you want but each vote is 1000 silver. The side that spends the most silver gets their matchmaking preference.
