What did Destiny 1 do right?

I’ve taken it upon myself to replay the entire Destiny campaign on a fresh character. Let’s compare D1 during ROI to D2’s current shadowkeep. CAMPAIGN: Taken King and Forsaken were both top notch and are in direct comparison with each other; Rise of Iron and Shadowkeep are not. Shadowkeep fails to deliver on anything “fresh”. Yeah sure we MIGHT have gotten a new “area” (moon) to explore, but what was there really to do after you finished the lackluster campaign that was shadowkeep? After the ROI campaign I was actually surprised about the fact that there was actually content that I forgot about. Memories of the iron lords that give substantial changes to gameplay, Iron Gjallarhorn and every other exotic quest, and an actual good raid with secrets, exotics and challenges. Keep in mind everything listed was available at launch and within the first week of launch. What did we get in Shadowkeep? A laughable few exotic quests that are not at all comparable to Iron Gjallarhorn or even Outbreak Prime, a very lackluster, dry, and repetitive vex invasion, and Eververse. Besides these, what other incentive was there to return to the moon? None. EVERVERSE: ROI eververse wasn’t the biggest thing regarding a “season” or “dlc” and didn’t overtake any quality from the earnable things through playing. Shadowkeep eververse was the focal point of the season. Shadowkeep and the season of the Undying was centered around eververse. Best of year 2 engram or whatever it was called? Doesn’t give dust. If you already have these items (because they’re all old) then it’s useless and everything new would have to be payed for. The dust economy is terrible, stop making excuses for Bungie. Eververse should not be the focal point of a season and take all the quality away from the actual gameplay. Tl;dr Eververse is taking away gameplay quality and Bungie doesn’t care. Let’s face it guys, stop trying to defend Bungie for their greed. They’re doing the least bit of work for money. Roi wasn’t perfect but was a lot better than shadowkeep by miles. Anyone defending bungie at this point is oblivious to what they are actually doing
Moderator edit: This thread has been moved to the #Destiny forum. • I think most raids from d1 were better than d1

  • I got pretty much everything in D1 and I didn’t have to dedicate my life to the game. Also, none of my content went away if I decided to go on hiatus for a few months. Just overall more fun IMO.
What did Destiny 1 do right?
Customizable subclass trees. Bright visuals that brought attention to the details of gear. D2's colors are faded and not very interesting to look at. Better looking armor sets. SRL. King's Fall - what many consider to be the best raid out of both games. Iron Banner gear that was regularly updated. Shaders that didn't require repurchasing. Vendors and factions that actually had rotating perk rolls and were worth re-visiting. Microtransactions that didn't feel like they were the focus of the dev's efforts. The best era of PvP - Taken King/House of Wolves. And just more memorable moments in general when it came to finally getting that exotic or god roll you've been hunting.

I completely agree. There is too much focus in the current eververse system. I regret ever letting some microtransactions slide when they first launched, although the Carlton was kinda fun to do. Bungie has crossed the line on their promise to keep microtransactions as not pay to win either. With the new season of dawn pass you can get 64-66 stat rolls free of grind. Bungie needs to let go of their money cow, eververse, and return to the main focus of the game. If bungie focused a lot more on gameplay rather than extending events, trying to sell us new eververse sets and re-using old armor sets for years then the game would feel very fresh. Sadly, we know where the priorities are.

        • Yeah, do you want to know what the difference is? Bungie solo is far worse and outmatched by Bungie with the backing of a multi-billion dollar investor that offered two top notch studios to fill in the pieces. I would rate the annual pass better than Shadowkeep. Hell, I would rate the combination of CoO and Warmind better than Shadowkeep. They couldn’t even be bothered to create a new boss. Damn. That’s about as low as you can get. So if they were able to produce something as good as Forsaken and then follow it up with the annual pass, the only difference I see now is a lot less help. Bungie solo doesn’t appear to be that top notch. I don’t know how else you look at it.

        • Rise of Iron was a closing chapter to the first game, so it had to have more of an impact. I'm sure before Destiny 3, we'll get a sweet closer DLC to add some depth to Destiny 2 before the inevitable watering down of the new start (not a negative thing, just inevitable)

              • 1. Paragraphs, damnit. 2. More toxic nostalgia. I loved Rise of Iron. But this notion that it was this perfect experience that the game somehow fell away from is BULLSHIT. ROI was D1 finally getting to the minimum standard of being an RPG. But it was a game with lots of loot but very little to do. All ROI gave us was a raid, a few story missions, a few quests and a few strikes. It gave us one update to an existing play space and one very crude horde mode. Then nothing else. That was all the original content for the year. 3. Destiny 2 at this point blows ROI out of the water both in terms of quantity and quality of content.... and we still have two-and-half SEASONS of additional content to go. In part because the revenue that Evereverse is generating pays the cost to create, and maintain that content. So I’m really getting tired of hearing you kids whine about cosmetics that have no impact on the game, while taking the content that money pays for for granted.

                  • Sparrow racing, sparrow horns, strike specific loot (on all strikes), best armor, raid armor ornaments were earned by completing raid challenges, always had faction vendors, had test weapons and arms week, they never stopped Trials, made all raid weapons into exotic adept versions, had better raids, we had the Dreadnought to explore and patrol

Armor design! No subclass forced game play! Trials, refresh of vendors! Factions we're a constant! Exotics didn't feel as useless! Iron banner felt worth it! Desire to play pve! Warlocks weren't trash till they over nerfed them later on and are still trying to recover in y3 of d2. Bungie and the community hates warlocks!

                    • *Heavy ammo drops and saving your ammo. If it dropped for you, you got to keep it. *Being able to drive your sparrow. -blam!- Bungie, at the very start of D2, made it to where as soon as you jump on your sparrow the firing rate of the enemy quadruples and your sparrow is destroyed in a second!!! *Rocket launchers shot more than one rocket before having to reload. *You received the “quality items” by playing the game. Rewarded for gameplay *You didn’t have a problem running around on the maps. *One could solo most of the activities! Most of the nightfalls. *The guardian wasn’t made too weak by constant nerfing and then giving the enemy buffs(stealth but easily noticeable) *Thats enough for now!!!
