Exotics costing 3 is a bit overkill, at least based on the situation that exotics aren't dropping with base star values of 65+ by default.
But otherwise...I think it's fine.
I just masterworked 2 of my gear pieces today, One of which is a Void chest piece with a currently stat value of 85.
Void in particular fits well with me, because I used Snipers, Hand Cannons, Grenade launchers and Scout A LOT, so I mix of unflinching and reserve perks makes it a valuable gear piece to masterwork, whether I'm playing PvP or PvE.
That armour isn't gonna go away.
There's no reason for it to go away.
And yeah it might have a Undying slot on it, but that doesn't make it useless.
I assume I'm gonna have that chest piece forever, until I get insanely lucky and get something better.
I think that's what people aren't acknowledging.
I do think we need more places to EARN the materials, but at the same time, people need to kind of accept masterworking stuff is a big deal and the gear you masterwork, you should intend to use, presumably, forever.

Except when Bungie introduce new gear/armour system and make stats of your older gear lower to force you to regrind old gear. Happens with my masterworked gambit prime armour.
-
Says who? When did they replace it last time? Never. Did they change how weapon work? No since pre Forsaken. You have literally no proof that armour 2.0 all go away. The only chance 2.0 will go away, is it the game out grows armour 2.0, and we need a deeper system, which is hardly a problem
-
They replaced it at the end of year 1. Remember when Forsaken dropped and we got armor with random rolls on it? So thats a year ago yea.
-
Right, so? Because that gear mattered at all? At the end of the day, it's a videogame. You're not actually spending money on masterwork cores. At the very least, in the worst case scenario, in 345 days, your current gear might be irrelevant. Damn. Damn dude, what a shame /s But currently, based on the fact that random roll weapons works as a system, I still have my rapid fire/rampage Duke. I still have my weapons from Year 2, and the only reason they're replaced, is because something better came along. Its not a big deal, get a life.
-
I am talking about armour as armour got changed. Yes, armour 1.0 is still in your Vault but armour 1.0 got terrible stats at least in my case.
-
Not only is it overkill as far as cost, who wants to spend three shards on poor stat exotics with these stupid element restrictions because it's the only one you have. This whole system is lame. This is the worst update they ever did and I think that a lot of players will end up leaving when they realize they are forever stuck at a certain base level because you know, good ole bungie rng is so reliable.

Well I agree it is overkill. But that doesn't mean you can't level it up. Masterworking armour is there for armour you won't throw away or replace, so you wouldn't do it to a low value Exotic anyway. I just got a 58 base Doomfang, with 20 Strength by default. That's worth masterworking, if I decide to do it. But it's still worth bumping to at least level 8
