Real question.

Why in the -blam!- are people so easily offended these days? I mean, literally everything is getting "offensive". It's hard to say anything at all without people raging about it. When and why did this start happening?

  • The problem is threefold. 1. Some people are over sensitive, and make ridiculous claims like "negative representation of a character in fiction from this demographic is discrimination" or "saying 'Merry Christmas' is racist." 2. As a result of this overzealousness, the majority of people assume that when a genuine discrimination claim is made, that it too is "oversensitive" and a "real version of 1984." These people basically don't believe in discrimination, and frequently use words like "free speech," "entitled," "oversensitive," and attempt to vilify the person making the initial discrimination claims while also defending people who discriminate, often without realising what they are doing. 3. While the first two points provoke an almost constant argument, a third group of people try relentlessly to be as offensive as possible, demonising minorities, making "dark jokes" that aren't actually jokes, and harassing the aforementioned minorities. As a result of 3: 1 continues. Because of 1: 2 and 3 continue. This cycle leads to both the continuation of people who want to keep on discriminating and being awful to other people, and also leads to the continued oversensitive and mislead claims.

To have a basic grasp of American history, which I am kind and generous enough to believe everyone here does, and still somehow believe that people are more offended nowadays than they were in the past is textbook identity politics. You don't see "offense", or you consider it legitimate and label it something else, when it benefits your identity or group association. So it becomes possible to know the history of taking offense but dismiss it as not taking offense, whereas this other thing that is threatening to your identity actually is taking offense. And now I've said offense too much and it doesn't sound like a word anymore. Offense offense offne sensfoo offff

    • You seem offended by this. At the very least angry about it... Just let it go.

    •
Why in the -blam!- are people so easily offended these days? I mean, literally everything is getting "offensive". It's hard to say anything at all without people raging about it. When and why did this start happening?
I’ve done some thinking on this, as I do with all things, and I’ve come to a simple conclusion. But I need your help. Y’see, what I’ve learned is that all things have meaning. Obviously. Yet I think, in times long ago, this meaning was not meant to be overthought or bring entitlement, but to be looked over as a part of society and life. I believe that somewhere along the lines of the evolution of our society, this said entitlement escaped our minds, letting loose inspiration. Wtf does this mean? Well, let thou telleth thee. Look at the song “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas.” Many people thought of this song as racist as of this day and age. However, in times of old, this song was looked at as “just a part of the world we live in” aka normal. Yet now, with the changing of the world, and people have been thinking that “everything being offensive is ok”. —————————————| TLDR: people feel entitled. —————————————| If there is anything you can suggest for this comment, please do. It’s easier to shield yourself from criticism than it is to change. And it’s easier to block out the ‘haters’ by calling them trolls or bigots or libtards and pretending they couldn’t possibly be right about anything. A lot of it also has to deal with a bullshit search for identity. Why be an individual when you can dye your hair and screech about hormones, or don the Don’s red cap and ride his red rocket all the way to the red dawn of right-wing heaven?
