Something I have to get off my chest

I’m sorry, you don’t have to read any of this. This is just the result of several days of emotional buildup and I need to let it out somehow. What better place than a bunch of internet strangers who also happen to like video games? So a few days ago, I showed my mom my favorite YouTuber, Davie504. As someone who plays the bass guitar, he’s a big inspiration to me, and I love his videos. After showing my mom a few of his most impressive videos, my mom straight up says some bullshit like “you could be as good as this guy if you didn’t play video games so much.” She even goes to say that I could have been as good as Jimi Hendrix and such if I didn’t like video games. And I’m not the type to disagree with my parents over something like this, but it took a lot of willpower to keep myself from saying that I don’t play video games that much. Or I haven’t even played the bass for 11 months yet. Or Jimi Hendrix and Davie504 have years and years of musical experience under their belts. I’m just a novice. I have talent and I can play, but there’s still so much I haven’t learned. And I’m not perfect ether. I can’t master a god damn instrument in under a -blam!-ing year. The reason I can’t just playa 24 string bass or the flight of the bumblebee is because it’s so much damn harder than it looks. I’m good at it, and I’m willing to try, but I lack experience. In fact, I’ve noticed in the past few months that I’ve leaned towards playing my bass over video games. Now understand that I still love video games and I still love the bass, it’s just that the reason I haven’t achieved total mastery of my instrument is because I can’t learn at the speed of light. Video games aren’t blocking my progression, and they aren’t the center of my world ether. Edit: You guys have given my lots of great insight into this. I’ve decided to stop dwelling on it and not think about it as much unless it comes up again.

  • She could be right. I've put many hours (over 1,000 into a single game), and I still do it. Why? Entertainment. I could've gotten several college degrees with that time, and been in a way worse financial state, but also have an amazing future. It's hard to continue work, find a girlfriend, keep up with family, get deployed, etc. and stay engaged. Basically, it's hard to stay working with enthusiasm without a break here and there. You do you, as long as you stay productive.

Non-gamers do not understand gamers and older non-gamers are even less understanding of it. She is just trying to encourage you in her own way, so try to take the good away from it and ignore the bad. As a parent, you rely on a mixture of how you were raised, what you have seen that you liked from other parents and a shit load of mistakes. Kids do jot have an instruction manual or a tutorial, so we -blam!- up and yeah, it sucks and makes no sense until you become a parent.

      • I totally get that. My dad says stuff like that all the time, about really everything. I've learned that not placing any importance on stuff like that is the easiest way to not dwell on it, to just not let it matter to me. I am my own person- what is important to me, regardless of what others say, is important. If I want to spend my night playing games instead of doing my homework because I've been crazy stressed and just want to relax, then playing games is more important than doing my homework. Simply because society or family or whoever says one thing doesn't mean it has to always be true. And not everything has to be a competition, not everything has to be improved on. Could you be an amazing bass player if you wanted? Yeah- but if you were happy with being mediocre, then there's no need to push yourself to improve. The moment your hobbies start taking a ton of effort and creating a lot of stress, you should stop and evaluate if it's really worth it. Improve if you want- not because you have to. Just my two cents, from a college student who's living with his family so he doesn't have to pay far more money to live than he currently makes.

      • Just think of how many times Jimi Hendrix's parents probably told him he could have been something if he'd read more books and not waste so much time goofing off with his guitar.

        • I think you're reading too much into it and took things more harshly than you should've. Remember that not even your parents know you as well as you know yourself, especially on things like video games which weren't as prevalent in their generation.

        • Since you say you're already moving on, I won't give any insight and just offer up this: If you haven't already gotten it, Rocksmith 2014 may be something you'd be interested in. It's like Guitar Hero, only you plug in a real bass-/guitar and it adjusts the songs based on your performance (adding more notes if you're acing it, or removing some if you're struggling). I've been playing it for a couple years now, and I feel like I've made huge strides in my mastery of the guitar (more than the several years before getting Rocksmith).

        • My mom compares me sometimes, or says I play a lot of video games. Don't worry about what she says. Parents say silly things. We all learn, think, and do things differently. Davie504 is like I think close to his 30's and must have been playing bass for a long time. I personally, have been playing both Upright and bass Guitar since I was in 4th grade (Now I'm a freshman in college).
Very impressive Plague Doctor, but can you give your mom a hug?
• I wouldn’t let it get to you. If they bring it up again, I would hust say what you said here; that learning an instrument takes years, and that you can have two hobbies without one crushing the other. Someone will always disapprove of some aspect of your life, but it’s your life not theirs. You should always strive to be yourself, not what other people want you to be. That’s what I think, anyway.

              • I know exactly how that feels. My dad would always tell me how I would have a flawless GPA and would be an amazing drummer if I didnt play video games as much. I barely play video games as it is lol, I spend most of my time studying or at work or with my girlfriend. There is no arguing with them over it since they think video games are nothing except a waste of time. Just gotta ignore them and keep on doing what you're doing. Parents can suck sometimes, even though they want you to succeed, the shit they say is questionable. Hope you follow through with the bass! I never ended up continuing learning how to play the drums since I didnt have the money or space.

                • I raised 3 children and all I can say is sometimes parents say dumb things. It sounds like your parents think highly of you though, thinking you could be another Jimi (although Jimi played guitar, not bass) Hendrix. Just keep doing your thing and don't read too much into it. If it still bothers you, bring it up to the parent that you feel disrespected or whatever its your feeling. Let them know in a nice way that the remark upset you, then give your case as to why the remark was hurtful. Keep practicing the bass and keep playing video games, its who you are!
