Spider-man was the catalyst for Venom's existence. The symbiote learned human emotion from Peter Parker. Even though he tried to destroy it the symbiote saved his life. Eddie Brock felt personally slighted by Peter Parker after he was exposed as fabricating a lead story. He encountered the symbiote in the Church and they bonded over their hatred of Spider-man. This is what makes Venom. Can the writers of the movie do better than this? Doubtful.
