Rant About Dark Souls 3 PVP.

Don't read any further unless you want to see the effects of being exposed to toxic Pontiff PVP for over 3 hours straight. Dark Souls. It is a tough game. Fair, but tough. This sense of fairness is true, atleast, for player versus enemy. Delve into PVP, and that gets thrown out the window. Here is a dandy list of things that FromSoftware should have never made possible, and/or should fix. Any and all developers responsible for these horrors should have definitely not been given the job title they were. 1. Phantom range exists. Phantom range is basically when you swing at someone with a sword or other weapon, that someone is clearly out of range, whether by a lot or a little, and theyll still get hit for full damage. This is unavoidable, even using a LAN. It is literally a part of the game for whatever reason. 2. Ganking is so f*cking easy. Invaders get half their estus, can't even keep their ember active, and up to 2 or 3 phantoms can be summoned which are other players that help the host, the person you, as an invader, are trying to kill. While phantoms also get half their estus and can't keep the ember active, they have severe numbers. If one person gets damaged, they fall behind their line of R1 spamming zombies, and they heal, then join the "fight", once again where they proceed to demonstrate that they do infact know how to press R1. The invader, being one person, can easily be annihilated in under 5 swings with heavy weapons. Hosts and their phantoms can destroy when it only takes five hits to kill someone, and they do. You may say that invaders have the benefit of hiding behind hoards of enemies, but that advantage can screw you even further when the host uses a Seed of a Giant Tree. This abomination of an item turns all ads to attack you as well. Your only advantage has been taken away, and even been turned into a disadvantage. After every invasion, whether successful or not, a host can go back to Firelink Shrine and grab one. For free. It's a neverending cycle of giant tree seeds. 3. DLC weapons. If you're going to make them, make them balanced. Fromsoft obviously doesn't know what balance is however, judging by any weapon you pull out of a DLC world. Most weapons in base game have some of the same abilities or same concepts of abilities. Once moving out of Lothric though, every single weapon has its own little special snowflake of an ability. Whatever that one rock hammer is that launches those shrapnel pieces at you once it slams down, that is such a moronic idea. Its a guaranteed hit if you swing it at someone, as if the person being attacked dodges the slam, they're almost guaranteed to be hit by the rock pieces that come immediately afterwards. And boy, oh, boy does it do a ton of damage. Unavoidable attacks + high damage are obviously not good concepts to apply to the same weapon. There are many other weapons that have some bs like this, like the twin paired ultra greatswords. That thing's ability lets you swing around like a crazed hollow, covering e v e r y s i n g l e direction, plus rapid attacks, as well as you being extremely mobile while using the ability. Fromsoft needed to stop making their low level workers' dream weapons come true, because those weapons were all horrible ideas to be added into a game. 4. Ultra greatswords that have similar attacks to the Farron ultragreatsword. For those who don't know, ultragreatswords that behave like the farron ultragreatsword's R1s are some of the dumbest R1s in the whole game. These things swing forward from their back on their first attack, then from there, the second attack drives forward, and then slams backwards. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't able to turn while they're driving forward. You can cover nearly a 360° radius by moving to a side while driving forward. Your back is protected by how much your character swings backwards. Thank god nearly nobody uses these things. This isn't even everything wrong with Dark Souls 3's PVP, but I'm not racking my brain anymore thinking about how inconceivably bad this mechanic is. I hope you enjoyed the frustrated musings of someone who has been getting killed because of these absolutely disgusting concepts.

  • I honestly don't enjoy PvP in Darks Souls 3 at all. For me Dark Souls 2 had the best PvP in the franchise, to compensate for it's shitty PvE.

  • They've never been good about weapon hitboxes. Ganking is a lot easier in 3 yes. DS3 was made to be accessible for a wide audience. Balance will never exist in a souls game because pvp has never been a priority and likely never will. None of the games have ever been perfect with invasions or pvp in general. Each one has their own horrible issues. It just depends on what you can swallow to enjoy as a player.

    • While I’m not a fan of Dark Souls pvp jn any sense (definitely the worst part of an amazing franchise), I do want to bring up a point on gankers—that being there’s nothing wrong with them. The Undead Arena exists for fair fights. You want a 1 on 1, go there. But if someone’s just trying to make it through the level, and you invade them, they have every right to team up on you. They’re not trying to PvP, they’re trying to get through the level. Nothing wrong with the Seed of a Tree of Giants, either. People who summon Red Sign Soapstones and gank are punks, though. You are an invader. You are jumping into someone’s world, whether they want you to or not, and trying to murder them. Things should be stacked in the host’s favor. I do agree phantom range is an issue. I’m so bad at PvP that any weapon can destroy me, though, so I can’t say much on balance.

      • The PvP aspect is just plain annoying, and something i never touched until i wanted to 100% the game (which you unfortunately then have to go online). Getting randomly invaded just to then lose all your soles at a crucial point just because someone shows up with better gear than you and can apparently just kill you from a mile away due to lag, is just not fun or interesting gameplay. I know some people love the PvP (for some reason that i will never understand), but i to me the perfect version of the game is playing offline. If it didnt have an offline feature, i dont know if i would have played it nearly as much as i did.
