*A Wild Gringo has appeared*
So if you haven't seen, Bungie makes a lot of strange weapon names and descriptions. Here are the explanations for some.
Badger CCL is "Badger Couldn't Care Less".
LDR 5001 is "Long Distance Relationship" plus "five hundred and 1" is just outside the average restraining order.
Telesto- Telesto is actually a moon of Saturn. The weapon was formed from a remnant of the Reef's weapon, the Harbringers. They were used against the Hive during the Battle at Saturn's Rings and destroyed Telesto in the process.
No Land Beyond- A Quote by a WWII Russian sniper
Gjallahorn- In Norse Mythology, the Gjallahorn was a horn blown to signal the beginning of the end of the world.
Another NitC- "Another Nail in the Coffin"
TFWPKY 1969- "The Fall Will Probably Kill You..."- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, made in 1969. The quote is completed with "..., but if that doesn't, the bullets surely will."
The Trolly Problem- A moral experiment of which you stand by and let more people get killed or go out of your way and only get one person killed.
Two to the Morgue- "They put one of ours in the hospital, we send one of theirs to the morgue."- The Untouchables

Two To The Morgue could have a different reference as well, judging by the flavor text "you know the old saying"
The saying has several variations of course, but the one I believe it means is "When you seek revenge, first dig two graves".
- TheFishE77
123 Syzygy- A reference to an astronomical phenomenon where celestial bodies align. Also it is a catastrophic event detailed in the Books of Sorrow.
The Devil You Know/ The Devil You Don't- "The Devil You Know is better than the Devil You Don't."
Against All Odds- The description is "Threat assessment calculates your odds of survival at 3,721:1...unless you pull this trigger." In The Empire Strikes Back, C3P0 says "Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately three thousand seven hundred and twenty to one."
Time On Target: TOT is a military term which means to fire all artillery at one target, at one time.
One Way Trip 000- 000 is Australia's "911". This means you're going to the hospital and not coming back.
Zero Point LotP- "Life of the Party!"
Up The Ante- A Poker reference. In the old days revolvers were common ways to settle gambling disputes, as this is a Handcannon.
Pax Totalus EPR8- Latin for "Total Peace". Which isn't a fitting name for something created for murder.
One/One Synesthete- Synesthete is when the brain connects two unconnected stimuli. Like you hear your car honk and think of the sweet taste of Maple Syrup
1000 Yard Stare- A blank stare a vet gets after experiencing emotionally traumatic events. (Insane1rish)
The Ram- A reference to a Dr. Who creature who was Ramlike and made people worship him.
Loner.Rebel-From Peewee's Big Adventure. "You don't want to get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel."
Loner, Dottie, rebel -> Loner Dot Rebel -> Loner.Rebel (Lootcifer)
Up For Anything- Its description, "Risk is its own reward" is a reference to Swiss Linguist, Ferdinand de Saussure. He was quoted saying, "Risk-taking brings its own reward: it keeps a continual agitation alive on the heart." This would tie into the name as, no matter what you do, you will gain purpose from it.
Zombie Apocalypse WF47- The WF seems to stand for "Wichita Falls", where a large Zombie Crawl takes place annually. I can't seem to find where the 47 comes in.
Eyasluna- Latin for "Hawk Moon." (Or Baby/Little Hawk Moon. I am getting conflicting responses)-PandaTaco, Powershelf, etc.
Hawksaw- A reference to Seattle Seahawks. Bungie has stated that they love the Seahawks (They are based in Washington) to the point where the Sunbreaker Hammer looks like a Seahawk (yes, they admitted this). The description, "A Northwestrly wind is blowing." Is an obvious remark that the Seahawks come from the American Southwest.
Hereafter- The description, "Huddled at the mountain's base, we had no choice but to beat our ploughshares into swords once more." is a reference to a part of The Bible, where farmers have to "Beat their ploughshares into swords" (meaning use their farming equipment as weapons for defense)
BTRD-345- "Be The Real Deal". Do that and you'll be "better than the rest." -KingGenius777
Apple of Discord- A reference to the Snow White tail. The name is representative of the magic apple Maleficent gave to Mrs. White. The description, "For the farest" is a reference to the fact that that Snow White was "farer" (prettier) of the two, and the apple was intentioned for her.
It seconds as the Apple of Discord from a Greek Myth. The story went that Eris (The goddess of Discord, not the Destiny character) had a contest to see which goddess was the most fare. Because she was the goddess of discord, or conflict, the threw the prize, The Apple of Discord, into the group causing a dispute between the Goddesses over who won which eventually led to the Trojan War.
Shadow Price- A Shadow Price is when an object has more value than originally apparent.-c111whelan999
Red Death- A reference to Edgar Allen Poe's The Masque of The Red Death where a plague manifests itself as a living being to kill a noble and his staff.-Kongu2525
also
in the novel The Shining, the idea of the "Red Death" from Edgar Allen Poe was actually planted in the main character's mind which showed that he was going insane. The phrase "The Red Death held sway over all!" cropped up during his periods of insanity frequently.- Rickylumic 77
MIDA Multitool- MIDA: Martian Interplanetary Defense Alliance: Multi-Tool.
If bungie is sticking to it's Halo roots with the U.E.S.C Marathon.
Jade Rabbit- Several cultures have recognized a "Rabbit on the moon". The Chinese version, the Jade Rabbit, was seen pounding a mortar and pestle, creating the elixir of life which makes their gods immortal.-H111xPower
Three Little Words- a reference to the King Lionidas (Spartan King) statue. On the statue are three words "Come and take", which is rumored to be the King's response to the Persians demand that the Spartans lay down their weapons.- The Breezy Bree
Monte Carlo- Monte Carlo is a city in Monaco (south of France). It is a lush city based on gambling, and the name "Monte Carlo" has become "an international byword for the extravagant display and reckless dispersal of wealth"
The Comedian- A reference to the DC character, The Comedian, a member of the Watchmen group who carried around his lucky shotgun.- TheBrownieD2W
EVERY OMOLON WEAPON- Powershield
Thesan (Thesan FR4) was the Estruscan God of the dawn and divinity. The Flavour text pints this out:
"Hasten the DAWN with the new Omolon Thesan FR4."
Eirene (Eirene RR4) was the Greek god of peace and Spring. The flavour text says
"A new Golden age is on the horizon. With the Omolon Eirene RR4, you'll be the first to see it coming."
This, I believe, is saying about how a golden age means PEACE, and comes around like the season of Spring.
The Kumakatok (Kumakatok HC4) were basically 3 Philippine Grim reapers who knocked on your door and brought bad omens. This is referenced in the flavour text:
"When the Omolon Kumakatok HC4 comes KNOCKING, even the Darkness locks its doors."
Uffern (Uffern HC4) is Welsh for hell, as referenced in the flavour text:
"Omolon's Uffern HC4 sentences the City's enemies to BURN"
Susanoo it may make more sense to say it is Japanese as well as it being the Shinto God of storms and water. Flavour text says:
The fearsome STORMS of today become the healing WATERS of tomorrow.
Cocytus (Cocytus SR4) is the river of wailing and one of the 5 that surround the Greek underworld. Flavour text says:
"The Omolon Cocytus SR4 will DROWN your enemies in a RIVER of pain.
Tuonela (Tuonela SR4) is a Finnish hell. The flavour text says:
"Hell will freeze over before the Omolon Tuonela SR4 will fail you."
This is referencing how Tuonela is a hell yet Finalnd is very cold, hence it freezing over.
Uzume (Uzume RR4) is the Shinto God of revelry and the dawn.
They've already used dawn with the Thesan so they kinda just winged this one with the flavour text.
Tlaloc (Tlaloc) was a very important Aztec God, hence its exotic status-the supreme God of the rain and storms. The Flavour text says:
"Release the STORM. Hold nothing back."
So, now I've done all of the year 2 Omolon weapons. Does it stop there? No! The year 1 bikes follow the same pattern, but there are no special Flavour texts here.
Helios (Helios SR4) was the Greek personification of the Sun.
The Yamaduta (Bronzed Yamaduta SR4/Primed Yamaduta S4) are Hindu messengers of death, basically Grim Reapers again.
Eos (Silvered Eos SR4) is the Greek personification of the dawn.
Sorg (Painted Sorg SR5) sadly, draws up a blank. However, it could be an abbreviation is Sorginak, assistants to the goddess Mari or witches in Basque mythology.
Abaddon (Painted Abaddon SR5) is either a Hebrew Bible bottomless pit, or the name of an angel from the Bible who controls a swarm of locusts.
Kin (Silvered Kin SR5) also shows nothing but is probably short for Ah Kin, a Mayan Sun-God.
Sorry but we ran out of room

Actually I believe Monte Carlo is a reference to the monte carlo method purely based off its flavor text: "There will always be paths to tread and method to try. Roll with it."

4 RisposteModificato da Atom Alchemist: 8/7/2016 10:32:07 AMCORRECTION, Hawksaw is a reference to a Shaekspeares Hamlet play, Act II, Scene 2. Hamlet, who has been acting more than a bit loopy, gets into a conversation with the courtiers Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, in the course of which he hints that his apparent madness may be a tactical pose he adopts at specific times, and not true dementia, saying “I am but mad North North west; when the wind is Southerly, I know a Hawk, from a hand saw.” CORRECTION, Three Little Words, have nothing to do with King Leonidas, as the words HE said are TWO words, (MOLON LABE) which translates into 4 words (come and get them) the most liekly reference for Three Little Words is likely the numourous SONG written about three little words (i love you) whihc has cropped up since the late 30's. it's commonly said in a relationship that some men simply can't say those three little words.

Y u no fix TOT? TOT has nothing to do with artillery all hitting the same target.

The 'Badger couldn't care less' weapon is a nod to the viral YouTube video "The Nastyass Honey Badger." One of my favourite 'documentaries ' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7wHMg5Yjg

1 RispondiSusanoo is more than just a Shinto god of water, he's a god of storms as well (hurricanes in particular). He played a major part in the creation of the Kusanagi, the emperors traditional sword passed down since forever (A part of a three piece set of regailia consisting of the sword, a mirror called Yata no Kagami, and a jewel called Yasakani no Magatama) No-one but the emperors and a handful of others have actually seen it. It is often depicted in art work as a katana (being Japanese) but the sword itself predates the invention of the katana by many years (its at least a couple hundred, but i don't remember how many). But yeah, Susanoo's a bit more than just a boring shinto water god.

2 RisposteI'd like to correct the 1000 yard stare. It's the stare of someone's face as death approaches. Example as someone in a hospital bed slowly moves from life into death, they have the "1000 yard stare"

2 RisposteModificato da Ersatz_Lord: 8/7/2016 4:59:51 AMCocytus SR4 - In Greek mythology ,Cocytus (the river of wailing), is one of the rivers leading to underworld. Hence the quote "The Omolon Cocytus SR4 will drown your enemies in a river of pain." Which may reference the poem Paradise Lost. Tuonela SR4 - Tuonela (Finnish mythology) is the realm of the dead (aka Hell.) Hence the quote "Hell will freeze over before the Omolon Tuonela SR4 will fail you." I have more but I'm typing this only phone and my fingers are going numb. Also Eyasluna is not Latin. It's a portmanteau (blending of words.) Eyas is old english for nestling but used to describe young hawks in falconry. Luna is for latin moon. I took Latin for a couple years.
I'm no fun at parties
Gringo, you never cease to amaze me.

Modificato da MORSE: 8/7/2016 8:23:48 AMHawksaw surely has a link to a quote from Shakespeare (hamlet, act 2, scene 2): " I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw." Also - apple of discord does not relate to Snow White - it's wholly related to Greek mythology. Good list though - should we do ship names next?

3 RisposteModificato da Ersatz_Lord: 8/7/2016 7:23:37 AMPax Totalus EPR8 : Pax totalus is Latin for Total Peace The EPR is likely in reference to the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox, a topic in quantum physics and the philosophy of science concerning the measurement and description of microscopic systems 8 - representing planets (9 since game was released) in our relatively microscopic solar system. So total peace of our solar system of 8 planets. A weapon representing mutual assured destruction. Also Xur could represent the 9th planet, Planet 9, which was recently discovered. Food for thought. Plot twist!
