Let's Talk Snipers

I agree that these are pressing issues.

254

These are mild concerns at best.

107

I disagree entirely, snipers are fine.

314

There are a ton of people arguing for Sniper nerfs. Then there are those against it. I personally think buffs to other guns would be more deserving, but Bungo seems convinced nothing's wrong. So there are a few arguments against the legitimacy of Sniping inside the game Destiny as it is now. Recoil/Flinch While ADS (Zoomed): Try shooting through a sniper scope on ANY gun in real life. You'll notice that the magnification causes the recoil (ergo flinching,) to appear drastically worse than when you hip fire or if you used an iron sight. Yet the recoil pattern seems to treat low Impact Snipers the same as max Impact Snipers. Therein lies the problem; the Snipers are all given the same niche, with different levels of power. But the power given implicates a direct rise in recoil, which is where Destiny's balance falls short: The recoil doesn't emulate anything close to the real thing. Effectively, for the zoomed recoil/flinch to be moving those few short inches from its centered position, you could logically only be recoiling slightly bodily (when realistically, you'd be groaning and tensing a bunch, possibly leaning or wobbling.) It's physically impossible that it is simulating anywhere near the true intensity of the expectable recoil/flinch, considering the visual representation given and the natural implications of using a magnified sight. Higher Impact = Lower Accuracy/'Consistency': Normally, if you want to spray a sniper at a score of enemies, you don't choose a Bolt-action with a heavy round meant to down a tank's tracks in extreme situations: You choose a smaller, compact weapon with smaller bullets and a larger magazine and a faster rate of fire. You are compensated with increased accuracy for the loss of sheer stopping power. Your shots will barely bounce the rifle if you hold it down enough. For a higher caliber rifle, you're taking a single shot that you calculate carefully over massive distances. You're not blasting shots away like a madman, you can't afford to risk exposing your location so quickly. It's more of a waiting game. Inside Destiny, there is no distinguishable difference between either archetype, and that is the underlying problem with Snipers and choosing/balancing Snipers. Choosing max Impact makes more sense for Revive Sniping and punishing bullet sponges (a monopoly on PvE AND PvP,) and since there is no discernible differences in accuracy they get away with optimum damage AND accuracy when there should be a give/take. Any other time, Bungo is ALL about the give/take. Except now. Makes me wonder why. Think about it: This is the exact change made to Efrideet's Spear Year 1 that changed Sniping thereafter. It got hit in the accuracy, and then it was more fair to use. That nerf combined with the Final Round nerf alone put sniping back into the true "niche" category where they belonged to stay for those who love to practice at their competitive game. Lack of Competitive Counters: In truth, the only real way to achieve balance is to make sure nothing is top dog. Otherwise balance is merely an illusion, a word we keep saying to ourselves and we pretend to believe is real. So far, we have not obtained true balance. Only the illusion. Like most games. And that is because the only true competitive counters for Snipers are: Scout Rifles, Pulse Rifles*, and Rocket Launchers.* One of those counters got nerfed ('balanced too hard' I'd say,) while the other is Heavy Ammo that honestly only counters by sheer overwhelming force. MG's do the same but they can't cross-map bomb you like a Rocket, so I consider them an opportunist counter like Shotguns/Fusions/etc. Scouts are okay as a counter, but MIDA immediately obsoleted all the Legendaries and even Tlaloc. Pretty much the only Scout that can actually counter a Sniper is MIDA, the rest mostly just annoy snipers. And running a Scout practically necessitates a CQC Special, which just got nerfed, so running this loadout is still very questionable for elitist game modes like IB or ToO. The Sniper Niche: Stealth Assault A thing about Destiny that immediately signaled that sniping would go above and beyond actual physical constraints was when they completely botched the practical niche of snipers: the stealth assault. Snipers very rarely 'go loud' because they KNOW JUST HOW IMPOSSIBLE SNIPING IS UNDER RETURN FIRE! They're not running around and in your face about it... except in Destiny, then they're strafing, juking, and possibly Blinking/hopping around trying to outpace your crosshairs and get theirs into place quicker. It's like Bungo decided the nest big idea was to make "Call of Duty: Adderall Warfare." And that's the problem with the practicality behind Destiny's sniping: Bungo expects them to be jumping around, fighting other guns in the Crucible. They've actually designed Snipers around being a skill gun more for on-the-go trickshotting than the actual niche they hold in reality. They've been endowed with power beyond imagining while other options are having their viability torn from them through petty attempts at what they call balance. Conclusion: So at this point, we're left to understand that the meta is in a tricky situation, and the biggest problem is the lack of a true niche in Snipers. They've become a generic boomstick that anybody can use with enough practise. I only equipped Snipers sparingly, and even I can scrape up some decent kills with 1k Stare. The stuff you expect the pros to be doing in average/above average footage. Certainly not something you expect from a Sniper newbie. And then there's the pros, going way over the top with what they've been enabled to do. I'm sorry, but when I watch these allegedly 'pro' players all using nearly the same loadout to snipe, regardless of whether or not it takes time to learn to use the NLB or whatever sniper you argue takes skill (it takes practice, not skill,) the bottom line is there's obviously a bias towards Sniping infecting the meta. When I watch Mr. Fruit play, and I see him racking up kills with the weapons that are supposedly nerfed into the dirt, that's where I see a true pro in the flesh. A guy who doesn't give a quack about your meta and can still show you what for if you think your little one-shot Special Weapon gimmicks are enough to stop him. This is the type of pro player that deserves attention for going above and beyond expectations. All anyone else is doing is conforming to the meta; true legends challenge the meta. (Hail Mr. Fruit!) And I think that's the problem here, we've created this impossible illusion that these players are skilled when they're only practised. It's like saying a Katarina player in LoL is pro because they can Pentakill 1v5. ANY KATARINA WHO PRACTICES CAN DO THAT. It's not a skill, it's just the learning curve. It's not a skill you have or you don't, it's all about learning the ropes. Going the extra mile. (Seems awfully conspicuous to try and enforce a meta that requires the largest learning curve... almost makes one wonder if they're once again trying to artificially increase play/grind time.) What we've effectively done is nerf everything in the meta because it doesn't have a 'learning curve' near the scale of a Sniper's. But all that did was create a double standard. These other guns had less range and damage (which is the potential to deny shielded revives in one shot,) BECAUSE they were easier to use. Now Bungo has given them a learning curve (players have to re-learn the weapons' max range, recoil patterns, etc.,) all while their strengths are being beaten further and further down into irrelevance and oblivion. Speaking of oblivion, can't wait to see the sea of naysayers. Talk to you guys later.

  • In my opinion, the weapon types that need buffs would be -Auto rifles, slight range increase -Pulse rifles, bring the impact up a smidge and erase hawksaw from existence since that WAS and still is the issue of pulses -Handcannons, add a small aim assist increase... not y1 insanity assist though I see how everyone jumps to the cheez whip guns each time a buff comes through, bringing more variety for countering would make it feel better. Snipers need something done, I used to snipe in the appropriate manner... now? All I've done with 1k stare is flick rhe thumbstick and fire off a headshot. It used to not be this easy, people used to not snipe much at all compared to this. This is like Sniper Elite: Destiny edition. As for how to fix snipers, I have no ideas aside from a lot more flinching and smaller precision hitboxes for sniper rifles. I mean hell, I headshotted a shadowshotting hunter mid air on accident tonight even xD something is wrong with this.

    • I have no problem with sniper but sidearm start of match. Then switch it to sniper... I know lot of players are weak on primary and wait it out on 2nd round of match then start switch to sniper..... It happen few times in trials but I report them for using loopholes with sidearm then switch sniper rifle on 2nd round...I think it should removed ammo on sidearm at start of game or you switch special weapons should removed ammo....Bungie will fix this soon.....

But the power given implicates a direct rise in recoil, which is where Destiny's balance falls short: The recoil doesn't emulate anything close to the real thing.
Partly because this is a universe where people can bring themselves back from the dead using Fire. It isn't suppose to emulate real life. If it did, then anything should one shot you and Destiny should uninstall once you die. If you want to argue from a balance standpoint, I can say from experience that the flinch is fine. If someone hits me while I'm scoping, I can hardly still hit them. And when I do, it was a lucky shot.
I think your biggest problem here is instead of arguing from a balance standpoint, you are comparing it to how real guns work which isn't applicable since this is a fantasy universe and guns should work as such. If you want a "give/take" with the high impact snipers and the low ones, I'd really make the fire rate distinguishable: make the higher impact ones shoot slower than they do now. Because as it stands, it is pretty easy to double tap someone with a sniper that supposedly shoots slow.
I'm not sure what "Lack of Competitive" counters is suppose to mean. If it means that snipers are the best killing weapon, then it depends. In a skilled sniper's hands, it may seem like there's little you can do but, this is a result of practice...a learned skill. You can't give someone who just started a sniper and they do well, you must learn how to snipe. I think this point is being overlooked. Year one Thorn, for example, had no competitive counters. It was the best primary at close, medium and long range. No gun besides TLW even came close. With Snipers, this isn't the case. While in Theory, it can skill at any range in Destiny, shotguns outperform it at close range and it works as intended as being the best at longer ranges. Additionally, because fusion rifles are nerf'd to all hell, it comes down to Snipers and Shotguns and because Shotguns are really inconsistent, Snipers are a favorite. This doesn't mean it's overpowered, it means that Shotguns and Fusions need rebalancing. Shotguns need to be more consistent while Fusions need to be worth a damn.
The Sniper Niche: Stealth Assault A thing about Destiny that immediately signaled that sniping would go above and beyond actual physical constraints was when they completely botched the practical niche of snipers: the stealth assault. It's like Bungo decided the nest big idea was to make "Call of Duty: Adderall Warfare."
Again, you are trying to apply real world logic to fantasy. Destiny never claimed to try to copy reality, so why are you trying to criticize them like they did?
Conclusion: So at this point, we're left to understand that the meta is in a tricky situation, and the biggest problem is the lack of a true niche in Snipers. They've become a generic boomstick that anybody can use with enough practise.
My whole problem with this paragraph is that it's using practice in a negative connotation. What I draw from this is that "if you practice with a sniper enough, it becomes Overpowered", but isn't that how it should be? Shouldn't those who practice enough be very good with a skill weapon?
I only equipped Snipers sparingly, and even I can scrape up some decent kills with 1k Stare. The stuff you expect the pros to be doing in average/above average footage. Certainly not something you expect from a Sniper newbie.
I highly doubt this. I need proof.
watch these allegedly 'pro' players all using nearly the same loadout to snipe, regardless of whether or not it takes time to learn to use the NLB or whatever sniper you argue takes skill (it takes practice, not skill,) the bottom line is there's obviously a bias towards Sniping infecting the meta.
"It takes practice not skill" Contradictory statement. If it didn't take skill then you wouldn't need practice. The whole point of practicing is to acquire or hone a skill you previously didn't have. So you admit that being good at sniping needs practice but doesn't require skill when if you need to practice sniping then it must require skill. I find nothing wrong with the rest of your post as it gets a little silly so I didn't take it seriously. I'm completely open to argue wether Snipers need nerfing or not but like everything else, we need reasons to nerf them and frankly these aren't good reasons. You argue from a balance perspective once and then you mis-apply it. All the other reasons are "this doesn't add up to reality" which should be apparent considering people are literally teleporting from place to place. You are an exceptional writer and this post could have been so much more. Edit: Before we nerf snipers, I do think we should buff the underpowered weapons (high impact Auto Rifles, Fusion rifles, Sunbreakers , etc.) and then see if we need to nerf them.

      • Snipers were in a great spot before shotguns and all the other guns got nerfed. all everyone ever wants is to nerf this game into the ground. (Besides fusion rifles - someone wants them buffed because they are truly awful, due to getting nerfed into the ground) The issue isn't snipers, it never was. It's the constant nerfing of other guns in the game. Snipers havent really changed other than a few perk modifications which was across all weapons. They were easily countered by shotguns, blink users, any hard pushing player really easily. (Everyone is so passive these days due to the fact that they use snipers, blink got nerfed too) Maybe we should consider rebalancing all weapons and even class talents in order for all weapons to be a viable option, for any weapon to be a counter to another. Balance is key and nerfing more weapons is not going to fix a thing.

          • I dont think you are supposed to take on a sniper from long range with any weapon other than a sniper of your own. I have learned a few things just from playing against all the snipers in this game: 1) Dont walk through choke points and when you see a sniper hard scoping do not try and peek out and shoot them. YOU will probably lose. Get to them by going around a different way or close distance using cover between you. 2) Do not chase wounded people around corners or into choke points 3) Force mid-close range fights. Make the enemy come to you where you have the advantage or feel most comfortable. Don't walk around aimlessly. 4) if you have to press don't press through a choke point and always get a grenade (preferably one that does DOT) at their feet to make them move and get in close quickly. 5) Know your surroundings - When picking up ammo, when going for the revive. Assume the enemy is always hard scoping all choke points and all guardian orbs. 6) Don't fight alone. Team up to take snipers out. Its almost impossible for one sniper to get you both at the same time when you are coming from different directions. 7) You will not win them all. Some people are just experts at this game and you will not beat them. Yes my K/D is mediocre but I had a terrible time learning to play Crucible and destroyed my K/D year one but I am getting better. Good luck out there!

              •
My proposed changes: Double the ADS time. (Snapshot=current average sniper ADS) Increase sway when strafing, just slightly. I don't think it's totally necessary to increase flinch under fire, but make it a little more unpredictable. Lots of encounters are won because the reticule drops back into original place. Not all the time, but a noticeable percentage. MOST IMPORTANT: Snipers are easy to use because of Destiny's fixed focal point (common in fps). Zoom in, spitball the reticule, and start practicing to be a quick scope God. Increasing time to ADS will help, but I would have the fixed focal point removed or moderately randomized, only while in the motion of zooming in. A lot of videos I've watched will slow it down, show how the reticule is not on target, and attribute their headshot kill to aim assist. But this is not (entirely) the case. The bullet already had a predetermined path to the center of the screen, and the shot was fired before the reticule could catch up. Now add snapshot and aim assist to that equation. If you are able to align your fixed focal point with the opponents head (easy, use sensitivity 3 or less and tell yourself to play slower), all that is needed is for you to zoom in, allow the aim assist to take over, and pull the trigger. Some learning curve physics, some practice, and a cheater mark for the focal point. I know the game is rated T, and is a bit easier to learn, but these changes would at least muddle the sniper usage a little, while still leaving them up to expected fps standards and a bit more competitive play.
The term "cheater mark" does not represent my attitude for the above strategy, everyone wants to play as competitively as they can and all available outlets to improve game will be used. This one is actually quite old..

You posted twice so I thought I'd share twice as well.

I'm sure they can make some kind of change that affect snipers only when being shot by another player. But yeah, for the most part Bungie sucks at balance and should probably look to hire someone with a good history of fair/close balance design choices.

That.....was beautiful. Poetry, almost. Personally, I really don't want to see snipers nerfed. However, Bungie refuses to buff other guns, and they seem pretty satisfied with how the changes have affected the game. This is fine. However, they fail to understand that EVERY weapon type needs to be brought down for a better, more balanced playing field. Snipers weren't just not used as much during Y1 until ToO. In addition to that, they had more competition from primaries and other specials. Does anyone remember the Pulse Rifle meta? Pulse rifles were an amazing option that allowed you to compete with snipers. But alas, those were nerfed as well. It actually pisses me off because, the same "players" that I've seen beg for nerfs previously are now moving on to complaining about subclasses such as Titans and Warlocks (Trying to make the game into something it's not). However, when you bring up sniper rifles needing adjustments, suddenly, they pull back and claim that you are a "scrub". Ummm....no. I don't -blam!-ing think so. You either want a balanced crucible, or you don't. Me? I just wanted a fun game, kind of like how it used to be. However, the constant nerfs and biased changes ruined it. Snipers in this game are probably the easiest that I have ever seen. No weapon sway or breathing mechanics. Additionally, you have tools to accommodate them in unbelievably versatile situations (snapshot, unflinching, low range scopes, no real movement disadvantages, STUPIDLY high bodyshot damage and etc).

                          • Idk how anyone could say snipers are fine unless they were biased sniper fanboys. I see no way to defend the sniper epidemic. Ppl love to say that snipers haven't changed since year one why do the need nerf now? And the answer is because THE OTHER SPECIALS HAVE BEEN NERFED! Is it hard to understand how it works? Fusion rifles kept shotguns in check and they were nerfed. Shotguns kept snipers in check but because fusions were nerfed shotguns ran rampant. They got nerfed. Now snipers are the same as the always have been while the other counters are at low low low points. Either buff things back or nerf snipers. Simple as that. Or else this game is dead. You'll have no casual players at all.

                            • well if we are going to nerf snipers, let nerf shotguns too. just cause.( same reason you want to nerf snipers "just cause" you suck with them.) how about people quit whinning about every little thing in the game. i guarantee you that if everyone keeps bitching about the peoblems they have with the game it will end up being a pile of shit game. just look at other popular MMOS, I.E. Runescape. Runescape is RUINED because of people like you bitching about evey time you encounter a player who is better then you. "lets go bitch and say things need to be nerfed because i suck at the game and its not fair that i suck" that sums up everyone and anyone whinning about the current state of the game. in fact, if anything needs to be changed, its hand cannons, they need a BUFF
