650+ hrs year one, just got taken king
I was a hardcore destiny player for the almost the entirety of year one, and then during the summer I decided to take a break and stop playing. Now, in February, I picked up the Taken King. All of my friends are light level 310+ and I need to catch up with them fairly quickly. Any advice for getting started?

The vendor version of Dead Orbit Scout Rifle gives Fatebringer a run for its money. The 1000 Yard Stare and Conspiracy Theory D quest rewards are a must have. Don't bother buying Exotics from Xur or the Kiosk. What until you get to 300-310 Light before using Three of Coins. Infusing Exotics isn't worth the hassle because Xur doesn't sell Shards anymore. Exotic Shards are scarce and they will be eaten up because you can now purchase Glass Needles to re-roll Exotic armor for desirable stats and perks. Only quest Exotics should be infused. Pick your first sword... Want the highest DPS output for single targets? Choose the Solar Edge to get Raze Lighter. Want a ranged attack on your sword? Choose Arc Edge to get Bolt Caster. Want a sword for crowd control? Choose Void Edge for Dark Drinker. The only Raid weapons worth keeping are the Pulse Rifle, Heavy MG, Rocket Launcher if it has Tripod or Cluster Bombs and maybe the Scout Rifle if it has Full Auto. Use the rest for infusion fuel. Trust me, the rest are worse than the PoE weapons.

1 RispondiWhen handing in engrams make sure to equip the highest light items available on you even if you never plan on using said items. The engram system works off your current highest light at time of hand ins.

You'll end up with a ton of engrams that will decrypt into acceptable sets to do things like the weekly heroics and nightfall. Also, if you just got TTK you can probably do that Recruit a friend thing and make someone's day in exchange for any help they offer as those quests consist of getting to 40 then doing a few endgame activities. Kind of you "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" arrangement.[spoiler]98% sure that Recruit a friend is triggered from TTK so you could've played vanilla Destiny for months and only after buying TTK would you be able to for 7 days after the fact.[/spoiler]

2 RisposteQuest then court of oryx. The when you get around 295-300 run normal for 310 gear. After a few weeks you should be high enough for hard.

Just do the ttk quest...alot of them reward legendaries at the end...they are fairly simple todo as well...maybe ask a friend or 2 for help...an easy exotic to get early on is the boolean gemini from completing petras quest lines...just rank her up to lvl 3 and complete the lost and found quest and youre good to go...its really easy once your over 280+ light

Play with them and have them carry you through things like IB that comes back in 2 weeks, and the vanguard heroic strike playlist too. Also, make sure to always have your highest light level gear equipped, especially when decrypting engrams of any kind. Only decrypt things one at a time, check its light level, then equip if it's better than what you've got on. Using that method, you can easily hit 300 within a week, 2 weeks max without even doing the raid

Very simple. Every time you go to the cryptarch to get a blue, the RNG will always be close to your light level. So decrypt one blue, look at it and see if it is higher than the one you have now. If it is, equip and and do the next one. And so on and so forth.

Honestly that's a good thing. You'll have plenty to do to keep you busy until the spring update launches, which will hopefully keep you busy until the fall expansion launches. This is a good time to start playing again, IMO.

2 RisposteDon't buy anything with marks, just save up.. You'll need them. You'll get drops replacing your highest light level armor consistently. Other than that, Heroic strikes, Court of Oryx, Crimson doubles

play 7 matches of crimson doubles. run court of oryx(have your friends help)run strikes when you dont have friends to help. run banner when it comes back on the 23. soon as your high enough light have your friends drag you through normal oryx a few times.

Only equip your highest light gear. Decrypted loot is rolled based on what you have equipped, if you wear low light then you'll get low light.

From there grind vanguard strikes / heroics strikes till about 290 light , then start slowly inching towards kings fall, up your light with raid gear and weapons with help from friends . Iron banner will be hitting the 23rd and I highly recommend doing that event at 280+ light , though that is a minimum in my opinion since by this time even the Christmas noobs are probably 310+ and light level differences will be significant if you have a deficit of even 20 light compared to the avg iron banner player . Crucible is also a good way to earn xp towards leveling up overall however light level is an average of all your weapons and armor values , so there is no option but to do strikes from lvl 40 to raise your light and get good drops .Also three of coins should be your best friend so unless you really desire something from xur , which I expect you will if you just started , then pick that up and the rest of your strange coins should be allotted towards purchase of three of coins , which is the most effective way to get exotic drops off of ultra pve boss kills / crucible games . These exotic engrams will decrypt at 290 light standard but have a chance at 310 light once you hit light lvl 300 , beyond 310 its guaranteed 310 .

If your friends are cool and any good then they'll take you into the normal raid at around 270-280 light, you should be able to get some gear to bump you up. And get you closer to 300. Trials of Osiris is good to get gear if you have a couple of friends that are willing to take you through it. 5 wins will get you an armor piece and 7 wins will get you a weapon. Also the bounties are really easy to complete for potential good loot. Just getting up to level 40 is actually really easy. Just do the story missions.
