In my opinion she was out of line shouting at you immediately, especially if you genuinely did not know you were asked to clean the hallway. My mum does that on the odd occasion; sometimes without any sort of provocation. I'm starting to think that she has it in her mind that since I'm 17 I need to be yelled at in order for me to do anything. Anyway, I'm going off topic (ayyy). However, I don't see how calling your own mother "mentally ill" and an "idiot" is any less out of line. You started being in the wrong when you came back shouting at her when you really should've tried to keep your cool.
