Edit: to all the people complaining "But it's a Year 1 weapon!" "Who cares?" It's going to be coming into Year 2. Sooner or later, it's coming. And if it remains the way it is now when it makes the transition, Trials and Iron Banner will be added to the list of playlists that will be infested with it. THAT is why people should care, THAT is why I'm complaining about it, and THAT is why action should be taken now, before the problem gets any worse (and we saw what happened in Year 1 when Bungie didn't take aciton...).
And to all the people saying that Thorn is balanced, you're simply wrong. It is less powerful in relation to what it was in Year 1. That is an undeniable, solid fact. BUT, it is still far too powerful. Can you honestly defend a hand cannon that kills in 3 body shots? Can you explain to me why "sweaties" is filled with Thorn and not other, arguably more powerful, weapons like MIDA and Last Word? I'll tell you, if you think that it's balanced, Bungie will think it's balanced. And the problem will continue to get worse and worse, and, eventually, when the gun comes to Year 2, we'll have the Crucible in the state of Year 1 all over again (allbeit to a somewhat lesser degree). We have to make our voices heard to SOLVE the problem, people. If I shut up and don't come here to the forums, and Bob does the same, and Joe, and everybody just keeps their mouth shut, how is Bungie going to know it's a problem?
Also, no TLDR. A TLDR gives the basic points with no evidence to back it up. If you're going to come at me based on a paragraph-long TLDR, then chances are you won't be as knowledgable about my opinions than if you read the post. Thanks.
(End Edit. Continue reading for the actual post.)
Let's be honest here for a second. Thorn is completely and utterly broken in the current PvP meta. Granted, it was a hell of a lot worse in Year 1. Nonetheless, it is making a massive comeback. Any game mode aside from Trials and Iron Banner usually is plagued by AT LEAST one Thorn user in EVERY game. 3v3 sweaties has been reduced to using Thorn 24/7. The weapon is a monster, and it has to be stopped. But how?
Let's examine what makes Thorn far stronger than any other weapon in the game. The DoT that it has (Damage over Time) is undoubtedly the source of the problem. Now, this DoT used to do 7 damage per tick in PvP in Year 1, and it made the weapon far too lethal. Now, it only ticks for 3 damage, but it has a stacking effect (2 hits will result in 2 sets of ticks, 3 damage each, for basically 6 damage ticks. 3 hits will set upp 3 sets of ticks for essentially 9 damage ticks, etc.) This means that the weapon is STILL capable of 3-shot kills to the body. That is just wrong, and I'm not even going to explain why. If you think 3 shots to the foot, resulting in a kill, with a weapon of this type is ok, then you should probably leave this post right now, as I'm going to assume reason doesn't work with you.
But it is not just the lethality that makes the DoT too strong. The mechanics of the DoT make it so that you can hit a guardian, and, while it may not kill them, it will force them to back down until they stop burning, keeping them down until their health begins to regen, then until they are fully healed again. This process can take anywhere from 10-20 seconds, depending on your recovery stat (no tests here because I'm lazy). What this means? Someone can shoot you ONCE in your pinkie finger with this weapon and force you out of an engagement, leaving you weak for something like 20 seconds. Again, that is just wrong.
So how do we go about balancing this atrocity? We should have two goals in mind when thinking about Thorn's rebalance.
1. Reduce the lethality of the DoT to disable its ability to get 3-shot body kills and tear through guardians in their super, with enough stacks.
2. Reduce the time the DoT forces you away from an engagement.
Let's begin to tackle the first goal. Reduce the damage over time. This one's an easy one. Reduce the Thorn's base Damage over Time to 1 damage per tick in PvP. This greatly reduces the lethality of the weapon in PvP and will prevent the weapon from killing in 3 shots, much less tearing through guardians that have supers. The 1 damage will see almost meaningless, but it will keep a guardian's shields down without resulting in an overload of damage.
Now all of you filthy scrubs that ACTUALLY USE this weapon in PvE will no doubt be complaining right about now. "Nerfs in PvP affect PvE too! Waaah!" Here's what can be done to remedy that. Increase Thorn's base Damage over Time by X% in PvE to bring it back in line with where it is at now. (X representing the exact percent needed to keep it where it's currently at.) And don't say this can't be done. The DoT should be coded no differntly than any other form of base damage in the game. And, as we've seen numerous times before, the base damage can be reduced, and then buffed by a percentage in PvE to counteract the base damage nerf. We've seen this with pulses and autos, and it can (or should) be replicated here.
Next mission: reduce the time DoT forces you away from a fight, causing you to hide in a corner until your health regenerates. This one can be done fairly easily as well, believe it or not. Put quite simply, Reduce the time between damage ticks for the Damage over Time. Essentially, this means that you will be doing the same amount of damage in a shorter amount of time. Let's set the time to about a third of what it is now (although Bungie should be able to tinker with this and determine what they think is right.) 1This can actually be seen as a buff for the weapon. No damage is being lost, and the only difference is that the enemy will die quicker (in PvE). Whereas in PvP, players will burn for less time, causing players to be able to get back in the fight sooner and heed Lord Shaxx's constant screaming, "FIGHT BACK!"
Additionally, I've heard an interesting suggestion from PopeBear on Planet Destiny's podcast. He was upset with the fact that a person spraying the Thorn should not be rewarded for getting a lucky ankle shot, doing decent damage, and forcing them to back down. He suggested that Thorn's DoT should ONLY proc on precision hits. I think this is a very good idea. It rewards players that would actually take the time to aim with the thing, and punishes ones that spray it at the body. Only problem is, this change would probably affect PvE as well. It would be very difficult to code in the DoT to only proc on GUARDIAN headshots, while not affecting PvE in any way. Additionally, I feel that this nerf, in combination with the nerfs I suggested, would be a bit too drastic. Maybe people would prefer my ideas, and maybe they would prefer Pope's.
I would love to hear some feedback on this issue. I know the community is very vocal about the problem, and I have confidence that Bungie is aware of it as well and is looking for solutions. We can only hope that it won't take 6-7 months to balance, like last time...
That does it for me, Guardians. I'll see you out there.

24 RisposteOkay so I actually read your gibberish. The weapon is called "Thorn". The thing is supposed to be a pain in the ass. It was already nerfed all to hell, which was okay at the time. This is an alt account before you go digging into my stats. Your suggestions would basically turn Thorn into a sad shadow of itself. Keeping it as is while bringing it forward might actually make it useful in PvE. There is always a better weapon. Someone picked up a rock. The rock was better than the fist. Then, someone figured out something better. They didn't say, "Hey, your rock is unfair." They just got their head beaten in. You are going to get your head beaten in. Always. It might be Thorn. It might be the Vex. It might be a big rock. Close your mouth. Go back to the chalkboard. Dig into the bottom of your toy box until you find what works. Your frustration only wastes precious time that could be spent learning how to survive.

Remove it from the game

Bring back y1 thorn and make sweats fun again tbh

I like thorn just as it is, and no I'm not using it. Why not just get rid of dot? You are dumbing down the main perk of the gun anyway.. Replace it with kneepads or something. If anything needs to be changed its how bulky that thing is , taking up my whole damn screen..

While thorn is an amazing gun, it is not op in any way. It is an exotic handcannon that is meant to be strong, just like the other two. Hawkmoon and TLW are both able to two shot, although not very reliable. Thorn on the other hand requires at least three shots. TLW only requires three shots to the body yet it shoots significantly faster. Hawkmoon can also three shot to the body with the lucky rounds which are usually, in my experience, spaced out so one lucky round and two body shots normally kills. In order to have thorn as the medium range god you describe one must run send it to get do anything good in the medium range fights. In order to have a good close range one must use the perfect balence perk to help with the stability, also the send it perk destroys the closer range lethality since it reduces the handling, think of how shotguns were nerfed and its essentially the same. So yes thorn can do well in both but i highly doubt the person will switch perks while you rush them. Thorn is my favorite weapon because of how unique it is. Check my grimoire, it will account for about 7500 kills and about a third of my overall handcannon kills. This thing i have been using since the early days of vog. I know this gun and how it works. It is a pain sometimes but TLW and mida and just as good if you can use them well. I have been outplayed and outgunned by both mida and TLW simlpy by getting in close and using the exotic abilities of the weapons. Instead of crying nerf ask players how to counter. For example, i run the send it perk. If you run mida simply have max agility, since the armor wont save you from a three shot, and strafe side to side once you get close. This will make the send it thorn a very clunky weapon and might be able to land three shots but i would be mildly surprised. Between the reduced handling and the increased agility from mida it will be quite difficult to beat a mida user. TLW is essentially the same, get close and since TLW kills in an insane ttk it should win before the third thorn shot is even fired. The perfect balence thorn is the complete opposite. Keep your distance and it will be quite hard to hit your target although the recent ads patch does help the thorn it does not perform well past close range since send it is not on. Hope this helped. Thorn is love. Thorn is life. Thorn is eternal.

Modificato da Kain: 1/8/2016 6:48:05 AMLet it come. I guarantee more people will still use MIDA. It would spice things up a bit though... (no nerfs please, it's fine as it is right now)

Holy wall of text!!! TLDR but are you seriously crying nerf for an already nerf'd weapon?
-
Honestly, all thorn needs is either restore the base stats to yr1 (never reload). Or make the damage last longer with the same damage. That would be because it would give you some time to recover in between and if you stack it, you will be able to kill someone before they kill you
-
Or they could simply decrease the fire rate slightly instead of hampering the DoT which will finally make it good in PvE when it comes to Year 2. If you can't get away when there's more time between shots then you're fine

1 RispondiModificato da Squidwood4513: 1/8/2016 6:07:45 AMThorn doesn't stack and it doesn't reset after another shot.

What little i read before the novel began, you have no idea what the hell your talking about.

Red Death and any Legendary with Life Support counter it. Why does everyone complain about the ONE gun that has DoT when every class has DoT effects they can use in PvP? Some of them multiple DoT's.
-
2 RisposteI didn't read any of this, but the only way to nerf thorn right is to put the barrel on backwards.

Answer to title Step one don't do anything Step two profit

Go hug your goddamn Suros stop hurting my weapon that I used ever since the second week of destiny. Can't use a thing without you fools crying about it.

IMHO the 3x3 playlists like Salvage and Skirmish do indeed see Thorn users in them, but I don't think they break games at all. I've been playing a lot of Crucible now that IB is over, and I've lost when either I'm outclassed by skill or teamwork, not by a weapon. If Thorn gets nerfed again before it returns in Y2, though, I really don't care. I just want to use it in PvE again!

7 RisposteModificato da Lord Corignis: 1/8/2016 5:31:14 AMWell, I do agree Thorn is an asshole's weapon, and it's still overpowered as SHIT. But not because of the Mark of the Devourer. Thorn is OP because of the way it breaks archetype. Currently, there are two main archetypes of hand cannon. One is the low damage, high rate of fire category; and the other is the high damage, low rate of fire variant. Normally, these balance out. In the case of Dredgen Yor and Shin Malphur's signature weapons, they don't. The Last Word, however much you hate it, is working as intended. It's a stylish, close quarter combat primary, most at home in a tight room for it to Swiss cheese your enemies. Its range limitations make it pretty balanced in comparison to its evil counterpart. Thorn, however, engages at multiple distances; far outreaching its cowboy cousin. This is fine, were it not for the problem that it, too, is an archetype breaker. Too much damage, too much rate of fire. Thorn needs a decrease in either Rate of Fire or Damage. That's it. Mark of the Devourer is fine as is, provided we get one of those nerfs.

14 RisposteModificato da l CIII l: 1/8/2016 12:50:56 AMI think the DoT is what makes Thorn Exotic. However, I do agree 3 shot body kills are wrong and that should be fixed The REAL problem is in Thorn's base stats. Most people don't realize this because HC's in general are the least used primaries in crucible with the exception of TLW (I personally don't count this as a HC) Thorn at its core has the best of all worlds. Fastest firing model, high range, high impact, lots of bullets, fast reload All other hand cannons pale in comparison to thorn at its base. Adding the DoT is what really puts this weapon in god tier unstoppable Solution: some things must go! (Pick your poison) Either give up the impact and make it a 4 shot kill or give up the fire rate Give back its god awful reload and decrease bullet per magazine or give it TFC rate of fire

1 RispondiModificato da Rokkudai: 1/8/2016 4:28:22 AMHaving read your post, I would have to agree with precision DoT proc mentioned by another poster. It would allow the Thorn to come in to year 2 whenever it happens, balanced, and still reward skilled players with the DoT if they actually take the time to aim.

3 RisposteWhat you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Dot is what makes it exotic Really? Would 5 shots with a normal hc kill someone? Didn't think so. So the whole foot argument was irrelevant. Didn't read much further
