Since the new arrivals to the store, the usual two groups have emerged.
Group A: the whiners that look for anything to call Bungie out on and don't understand what pay to win is
Group B: the level headed group that understands what pay to win actually is and understands how little of an impact this actually has.
Pay to win is not getting to level 25 faster than me because you paid 30 dollars to do so. Level 25 doesn't have any advantage and I will reach that level in ten hours of gameplay. There is nothing about it that lets you "win" over me especially for the current player base.
Examples of what pay to win really is:
- buying an exclusive subclass
- buying an exclusive exotic weapon or armor
- buying a boost that significantly (like way greater than 3of coins) increases exotic drop rate and is usable all the time
- buying something that would be required to play content such as the raid
- buying things that would give you a significant advantage over every other player in the crucible
Now that you have real examples of what pay to win is, maybe you can make a better decision next time before coming and bitching on he forums about things you claim to be, but are not, pay to win.
Edit: Good fucking God I did not expect this to catch this much attention. I hope you all realize I won't be reading these comments lol. But thanks for giving me my first trending post! I will add some follow up points below.
1.) it is a slippery slope, I agree with that much, but it is in no way pay to win, no matter which tiniest little scenario you come up with in which it shows a glimpse of that nature, this has no effect on "winning" considering we were all given the spark of light for free when we bought ttk
2.) people are saying I'm the kind of person that would defend them even if they sold 320 gear. No..no I would not be. Selling end game gear, although it is something earn-able, is not something I would be okay with. What this current boost does is get you caught up quickly if you really want to blow 30 dollars, not allow you to spend money on something to get endgame gear while others have to grind for it. Not okay with that in the slightest.
3.) if Bungie ever sells anything available only through purchase with real world money that gives a significant advantage, like if they had sold the touch of malice or a thorn 2.0, that was not obtainable in game, I would be standing right alongside the rest of you rioting and protesting. Or if they sold any exotic gear for that matter.
4.) to recap, pay to win is not this. Pay to win is being able to buy something significantly advantageous that is completely unobtainable in game. But I would still not be okay with them selling anything of real importance in game. But xp boosters? The least of my worries.
Edit: I notice a number of you mentioning the "cosmetic only" promise. Technically, they still haven't broken it because eververse is what they were referring to. These items are sold through the console store :p (I'm just being a troll lol, but I do get what you're saying)

Of course it's not pay to win, but it's not cosmetic. I would guess they are worried, if bungie will go past cosmetics only what's next. Either way none has an affect on me. Just trying a level headed approach to understand why they may be upset.

Level 25? What is this about? All my characters are level 40. What are we talking about, and how does this help me win?
-
i agree wholeheartedly.

6 RisposteYou forgot Group C: The level-headed people that understand that this will only have a minimal impact, but also understand what this can lead to.
-
1 Risponditwo kids get Destiny for xmas. One buys this and gets to compete in Iron Banner on the 29th. The other doesn't. Or the other grinds his way to a decent level, but STILL doesn't have his subclass maxed out due to the ridonculous xp nerfs since 2.0 - he spends IB getting hammered, shadowshot and fist-of-panicked to hell with no response.
-
6 RisposteLol at your biased logic. Next argument: Eververse sells weapon for 1000 silver. OP "It's not pay to win because you have a 1 in 100 chance to get it from an ingram, or if you beat Trials. "
-
It's just one step closer to your examples. It started with emotes... Harmless right? Well now it's the racing book, sparrows, gear, and shaders. The game becomes a little less special every time something like this is added.
-
1 RispondiIn a matter of what, 2 months (?), Bungie has gone from cosmetic microtransactions to consumables now. If that's not an indication of where things are heading then idk what is. But of course, the white knights will defend this. I can't wait to see when they actually start selling pay-to-win stuff and what the knights have to say about that.

4 RisposteWait until they throw out the weapon/armor packs that can get you to 300 light - $19.99, 310 light - $24.99, 320 light - $29.99. Will all be gear that's obtainable in game, so not P2W, perks not special compared to drops. However, it will allow players (like me) who are unable to invest the time to hit 320 be able to play end game activities. If you don't think this is on the horizon, you're delusional.

+5 Internet points for shedding some light for some who don't see it.
-
It isn't pay-to-win yet, but this is another step closer.
-
Agree 100% this just cuts down on grind does not grant any advantage. If anything it takes away their experience of playing a low-level character and being excited about every drop they see, etc. But there is no advantage given. An advantage would be selling an exclusive exotic weapon, or would be selling a buff that increases weapon damage. Cutting down on grind is not an advantage as in fact something alot of people have been asking for. If it wasn't so much I'd use it to level defender and striker on my new Titan.

1 RispondiModificato da Arron Rift: 12/15/2015 8:56:20 PM-car revs it's engine and comes screeching down the road towards a group of Destiny players -one group screams "OMG it's gunna hit us!!!!" -other group "you idiots, do you even know what it's like to get hit by a car?? We haven't been hit and we never will, git gud!!"
there is a difference between saying it has happened and saying it is getting closer to happening at an alarming speed
2 RisposteModificato da DirtyGuttz: 12/15/2015 8:37:32 PMYou be like its only lvls, emotes, and mask it wont hurt anybody. Bungie be like M.O.N.E.Y M.O.N.E.Y Its pure corporate greed. You desticles defend it open your eyes not your wallets
-
3 RispostePay to win is where any person can buy an item to give them self an advantage over someone who does not buy said item. You have two new players one buys the boost and the other does not, the one who buys the boost has a clear advantage starting out over the one who does not. Does it effect you and me no probably not, you just have to look at it from the point of a new player.

Thank you for being one of the few people around here to display some rational thinking and common sense.

2 RisposteModificato da jbarbarian: 12/15/2015 8:34:08 PMthat moment when a dumb dumb calls himself level-headed. you are as dumb as a frog in boiling water. also, this guy had a K/D of .84 in Halo 3. of COURSE he will defend this. baddies like him benefit the most from stuff like this.

Good points from OP. I agree, I don't think that getting to 25 quicker affects me one bit. I am a little concerned for our future as a community. Does this mean that Activi$ion will pressure Bungie into making more microtransactions? Will future microtransactions be pay to win? I'm not sure, and even though I'm fine with everything right now, what will the future hold? I guess only time and Robert A. Kotick will know.
-
4 RisposteThey're getting really close to pay2win. First it was MTX emotes, then it was sparrows, now it's a character boost. Next thing you know its gear for money. It always starts with small shit.
-
I side with both on some things. Yes it isn't a very big thing to buy lvl 25 but this can lead to them bringing pay to win into the game. Again bungie is treading a thin line
-
It doesn't impact the game but selling a level 25 boost for 30 bucks seems excessive and pathetic. These level boost aren't worth 30 bucks. At most 5 bucks or less. If a gamer is happy to drop 30 bucks on the level boost then that is fine with me since it's their money. I just hate this because it makes bungie look desperate and greedy.
-
Bump... Too many group A

4 RisposteModificato da Graystash: 12/15/2015 7:29:34 PMFlawed definition of pay-to-win. Just because you cannot get to the highest gear by paying does not mean it is not pay to win. You defined pay-to-win what you want it to be not what it actually means. Consider two people just starting with this game. The boost gives an advantage to the player who buys it the one who does not has to grind and wait for that 3rd new subclass.
