How do people snipe? (Honest answers please)

Seriously! I've always shotgunned or fusioned because that's my game style. I decided to grab my 1000-Yard Stare with Hidden Hand (assuming I couldn't miss) and play some crucible. On top of no good clear shots or me shooting after they ran by, people were able to one-shot me from auto range with their sniper after a quick-scope! Props to those people. I really want to learn how to snipe, so any honest tips and help are appreciated. Edit 1: Firstly, thanks for all the positive feedback! So far I've only seen a small handful of rude people. I really like the kind side of the forums. It's a good change from the usual salt (oh god, I hope I didn't just jinx it). Edit 2: On an unrelated note, this is a good example of why K/D ratios shouldn't judge skill! As a mediocre PvP player, learning to use new weapons butchers my K/D beyond repair. I could care less, just a comment to throw around.

  • Practice with low zoom, then work your way up. If you feel ballsy enough, try using No Land Beyond for a whole match.

    • I'll be honest. Sniping isn't the easiest thing in the world, and its entirely acceptable for you to think its difficult. However, I have never given tips before, so don't judge. 1) Never throw yourself at the enemy. As fun as it may seem, jumping into it tends to never work unless you get lucky. I use Weapons of Light to body shot for fun, but that's the only chance you have. 2) Don't stay and fight. They're gonna kill you. Ensure that you are in position to attack before the enemy. One stray shot hits you, and its near impossible to aim. Retreating will always be your best option. Furthermore, retreat to an area that is not one you were at before. Learning to control the entire map not only makes you unpredictable, but also gives your team an advantage at these points. 3) Reload and keep your eyes peeled for special. Missing shots is okay. It happens more often than not. As long as you have ammo and are ready at all times, you won't have to worry about running dry in the midst of a fight. 4) You aren't taking down the opposing sniper. They can easily hit you first. Wherever you see them first, run. They will watch the wall you retreat behind, and emerging from behind that wall makes you an easy kill. Try to flip the tables on them. Watch where they retreat. Many snipers are desperate for the kill and pop right back out. 5) Try lowering your sensitivity. With a lower sensitivity, you can control the rifle much easier. You may be uneasy with this for a while, but you can get used to the idea. It reduces the effect of your clenching on the controller and the effect of sweat on your hands. I utilize sensitivity 10, but that is simply my playstyle. Snapping and shooting can work. 6) Don't hardscope unless you are safe in your team's hands. I recommend not staying in scope for longer than unnecessary. Try lightly tapping out of scope for a brief glimpse at radar; if you see red, move out. Staying in scope keeps you focused on one spot, and the enemy knows to come behind you instead of rush. 7) Know your weapon. A sniper rifle varies in power based on the perks it has. Your scope may grant aim assist or it may not. Higher impact sniper rifles are great for team environments as they can be bodyshot capable after damage is done. All snipers will one shot headshot a generic, unaffected target that is not buffed, so if you are willing to take the risk, a higher rate of fire sniper rifle is for you. If you prefer huge damage and capability to drop supercharged enemies, go for a high impact sniper such as 1000-yard stare. Furthermore, your perks can combine with the weapon type. A good example is the quest-drop 1000-yard stare. This is a high impact sniper with firefly. Firefly allows for precision kills to cause the target to explode. With more enemies nearby, the explosion damage radiates. At most, this explosion damage does 60 damage. Because of this and the high impact, 1000-yard stare can body shot any generic guardian who was near a firefly explosion. Another perk to be noted is hidden hand, as it gives you another jump in assist for each shot, which is exceptionally helpful in clearing single enemies and crowds. Perks such as Spray and Play and Partial Refund allow you to rip through a clip and get back to firing quickly. On another note, the trees are also helpful. Casket mag or Appended mag allow for a higher magazine but that does not necessarily mean more ammo per special crate. Skip rounds guarantees another round in a special pack as well as gives a chance for a rebound kill. (Note from the field: this applies inside Ward of Dawn.) Armor piercing rounds allow for potential double kills with one shot, and are great for clearing droves of enemies at the start of a match. Another key component is your base stats. Stability is great for focused, controlled firing you can rely on. Range allows you to kill far off enemies: great for maps such as First Light or Bastion. On the topic of range, watch your scope. Use a high zoom scope when you need it, but generically stick to a lower zoom scope such as Ambush or Tacsys for most encounters and maneuverability. Reload helps keep you fighting when your team needs you. 8) Keep the choke points in mind. In Control, choke points are obvious. Watch wherever enemies group up so you can take them down before they take you. 9) Keep your finger poised. Especially at the start of a match, keep your finger lightly on the trigger to minimize any delay or jump when you fire. You can hit a target easily if the bullet leaves exactly when you want it to. 10) Check your connection. Are you lagging? Are they lagging? This can cause delay and confusion. Invest in a new router or modem or find a better service company, it can help your real life too and keep you connected. 11) Don't get fancy because Heavy Ammo is spawning. Watching the enemy heavy is smart, but be safe. Stay at a distance. If they fire at you, the entire group will fall for cover and you are left without kills or Heavy Ammo. 12) Mix it up a little. Try Angel of Light or Empreyan Bellicose. Try Shade stepping and sniping. Don't be predictable. If they don't see you coming, they can't be prepared to shoot you first. 13) Don't be illogical. A sniper is not suitable for every map. You cannot look down every corridor on Anomaly or Thieves Den at once. Remember, you have a primary weapon. Use it for backup or when your sniper is unavailable. 14) Practice makes perfect. You won't get Mark of the Unbroken or Phantom your first sniper match. Try at least one match a day with your sniper until you are comfortable. Learn to put your abilities into play and use smoke, or throwing knife, or a grenade, or whatever you enjoy. 15) Listen to feedback. Your team knows you. Your friends know you. We can help. Many people here know their way around a sniper better than I do. Everyone has a sniper strategy that can work for them, so you can make your own too. Most importantly, don't put yourself down. Anyone can have a bad day. If you fail to snipe well, take a break. Its just a bad moment, not a bad player. Even more so, don't give up on Destiny. Just because you may think you're bad at sniping doesn't mean youre bad at everything. Any of you need help, my xb360 gamertag is RS That Rookie. I am often open to questions. On weekends, I may be willing to help you personally. I am a main Defender, and my strategies are unique to me as your skills are unique to me. On another note, I plan to release a montage soon. How exciting! Keep fighting, Guardians. It is the only way we will survive the long night. Rookiecookie, out.

      • It's essentially pure reaction time along with hand-eye coordination. The difference between getting a head shot and missing completely can come down to a tenth of a second. You just have to be fast on that trigger and trust your aim.

Check out Myzter''s YouTube Channel. He has a very informative video on the mechanics of sniping in the Crucible. Learn the basics of quick scoping and drag sniping and you will be fine. More importantly know when NOT to snipe. If you are on a small map with an opposing team full of shotgunners, don't even bother pulling out the long range rifle because you will get flanked every time while staring down the scope. and RS That Rookie's post is FULL of pro tips.

        • I personally am always thinking about what could be on the other side of that wall. NEVER challenge a sniper if he gets there first and is aimed in. You can do the sit emote and tell where they are on the other side of the wall. Other than that I take out mid range entirely by using Last Word (Destroys up close) and my sniper (Long, obvi) sometimes it's okay to get a body shot if you switch to your primary and clean it up Just my 2 cents

          • You should put Auto Centering on. When you sprint it puts the aim dot where a guardians head would be. Practice Quickscoping, drag scoping, and ADS Reflexes in Patrol. Tbh I practiced to get better in crucible with a Dot on my TV for a few weeks and I got used to where the center of the screen is.

            • You've just started out. Try different scopes and different types of snipers till you find one which you feel comfortable with. And keep using a sniper. You just aren't used to it yet. I'll take some time but keep on trying it. You can also watch TrueVanguard's sniping tutorials on youtube. They will help you.

              • During year one I was all about shotguns. But then during dark below I got my hands on a perfect Eff. Spear roll. Shortgaze, double down, clown cartridge, and perfect balance. I really wanted to snipe with it. So after weeks and weeks of practice I finally managed to learn how to snipe well. Then I started to pick up other snipers like longbow and LDR. Now during year 2 I love my 1000 yard stare. I bought the vendor one and have it at 310 now. Haven't gone back to shotguns since dark below.

              • Look, i snipe A LOT and i have to say, those guys that kill u at auto range are lucky... Its kind of a "oh God please let aim assost be on my side" thing, however, if you get good you can quickscope and whatnot... You just need to dedicate all of your time from shotguns and fusion rifles into snipers, you'll see, once you get that one good game your confidence will be sky high and you'll automatically become better at it! :) good luck bro:D

              • I am in the process of learning to snipe and it has been pretty rough. I have gotten better with practice tho. No need to get used to strafing while sniping and also getting your positioning down. If you hold down choke points, you can really keep a team at bay. This is the best I have done so far: http://xboxclips.com/iD0NTGIVEADUCK/20f606b3-b7bc-48fd-bb79-974b2db8949c

              • Just some basics: 1.) Learn exactly where the head height is of a guardian and keep your reticule at this height. It is FAR easier to aim if you only need to move your reticule to the left and right. Once you mix in any type of vertically, it makes the shot significantly harder, which will require much more practice. 2.) Always be moving. Don't stand still to line up a shot and instead always be strafing. Going along with this, if you are able to pick off a few people, immediately relocate because your positioning will be comprised. I have always told people that positioning is the absolute most important aspect of being a good sniper. 3.) If an enemy sniper sees you first, don't challenge. 4.) Try different sniping angles rather than the clear cut sniper lanes. People expect a sniper to setup camp in these areas. 5.) Do not get caught hard-scoping for long periods of time. You need to constantly be zooming in and out so you won't be caught off guard by a flank. 6.) Practice, practice, practice.

              • Most of the time you just need to aim to the left or right without moving the reticle up or down thanks to the flat and even ground. That's what makes sniping so easy.
