THE FREEMIUM EXPERIENCE... (Welcome to Activision, The Future of Destiny)

BEHOLD. This is the future you are creating for this game and potentially other AAA titles. Why does this community hate Destiny so much? I need to ask this question, because if you were any kind of actual fan who loves the concept and potential of this game from back in 2013, why do you continue to destroy this franchise? If you spend money on Destiny, you are hurting it. Period. Vanilla Destiny? We were duped into buying an incomplete game. Dark Below? We were tricked into buying something we thought was going to be an actual expansion. House of Wolves? We were manipulated into buying what we thought was fixing our major gripes, such as ascending older weapons. The Taken King? You had no excuse. NO ONE had any excuse. Bungie/Activision got their three strikes. How many months were we screwed over time and time again? How many on here complained and protested and demanded change...only to go ahead and continue buying the product? You want a voice, you want things fixed or features added. But unless you actually put weight behind your cause, unless you choose to JUST SAY NO and pull the needle from your arm? Then you can never truly expect anything you want to see ever really happen here. YOU are your own obstacle standing in your way. This is simple logic. Its common sense. Now look at what we're seeing happen here. Look at what has been allowed to happen. And I bet your FIRST REACTION to this post is "well its not really that important." If that is your mentality? You only have yourself to blame for what ends up happening down the road. You seem to think that because this is Bungie that everything is just fine. Its all on the level, right? That's just a delusion... ACTIVISION has been at the front of this from the very start. The people you loved at Bungie no longer with the studio? Activision. An incomplete game at launch with a butchered narrative? Activision. Cut Content from the game sold as DLC in the form of false expansions? Activision. Unfair Pricing of the new expansion? Activision. Paywalls being thrown up to effectively block players out of content they already paid for? Activision. THE INTRODUCTION OF MICRO-TRANSACTIONS? Activision. Emotes aren't a big deal, right? Who cares. Its all just cosmetic anyway. What happens when its Weapon Skins? What happens when its Guardian Customization Options? (Premium Options) What happens when its Random Engrams? What happens when its Random Resources? (Motes of Light, Strange Coins, Upgrade Materials, etc.) What happens when its Legendary Weapons/Armor? What happens when its Exotics? What happens when its Etheric Light 2.0? ($1.00 each used to upgrade ONE Weapon or Armor from Year 1) How far will it be allowed to go? Do you have any say in it? Of course not, because you just keep spending your money on it. You have become addicted. Your favorite game was hijacked and corrupted by Corporate Commander years ago. In your denial of this, so much has been allowed to happen. Bare in mind, this is the precedence you are setting for Destiny. This is Stage 1 for micro-transactions. They are "easing you into" the notion of Destiny having an in-game Cash Shop and they are telling you that there will be "free story content" being gradually released because its a trade-off. But you have zero clue what you are really trading off here. Go ahead and watch the video. Take a look at your future. In case this hasn't made it rather obvious, Bungie, I am 100% AGAINST this Cash Shop concept. There WAS a time when I would have been alright with it. But that was long before everything else that has already happened. Its painfully clear that Activision is calling all the shots and now Destiny is nothing more than a Halo/Borderlands version of COD. Those Emotes and new Skins should be added to the game for anyone who purchased The Taken King, NOT USED TO TRY AND SUCK MORE MONEY OUT OF THE COMMUNITY. This is NOT the kind of innovation I have been advocating for and its not something ANYONE should be encouraging any further. I know and you know that TTK was the last of all the Year 1 Content that you had and now you need to spend the rest of this year developing more to be sold, and the "free story content" is only there to keep giving the addicts their periodic "fix" to keep them hooked. That content is either already finished and was kept out of TTK so as to be released later at intervals or your have a small team assigned to make new missions similar at best to the Taken War quests. Fact is, none of that is really "FREE" though because people already paid for it. Year 2 is all about this new Cash Shop which you'll be expanding over the following months. I'm still waiting for my original $100 investment to equal the value of its cost. I demand Year 1 Content be overhauled "FOR FREE" so that the game I bought back in 2014 is an actual complete product. THEN. Provided you fix the broken, or rather non-existent progression system for this game, THEN I will possibly consider the notion of buying something. MAYBE. At this point? I see very little reason to do so.

  • The problem is that even if the microtransactions stayed cosmetic for the whole game its still wrong to put microtransacrions into a retail game in any form, basically we've paid £100+or $130+ ish for a game that now wants even more money from us and we're only in year 2, i know people will say its optional but all microtrans do is exploit the worst aspects of a gamer in the case of cosmetic items it plays of peoples jealousy of seeing a person with the dance in this case and that makes them want to buy, micros are not about giving someone something extra for extra money there about making people who havnt bought it feel bad they havnt bought it

Malphisto, stop bro. A great speaker once said that you can't change the way a man thinks if you give him all the info at one time. Instead, you must give it in small amounts, eventually leading him to verify the truth for himself. Malcom X said it, and it is true. People just wont realize how slippery this slope is going to get. They won't look past this game. You and I both know that the community is addicted. So when Destiny fans realize how much money they have spent so far, and still are being asked for more, you will have won. Besides, the game isn't even all that. Don't get me wrong, it is fun, but why is it fun? I play every day. I don't know why. And the releases for next gen games have been similar to this game, sub par. The only thing you do in Destiny is grind. Doing stuff over and over for that CHANCE to get something out of it. Personal example, I have done the Dust Palace strike on all difficulties, atleast twenty times. I have did the Hard Crota raid atleast twenty times. How many of you think the a Flayer Mantle or Crux has ever graced my screen? Malphisto, you can't save those that are already loss. I appreciate you giving this much effort. But unless you were being interviewed on National television, the millions of kids, stoners, no lifes(like me), and new age gamers will continue to be milked of cash. Well, not me. I haven't spent a dime on this game, I just pay for the PS Plus. My cousin loves this game, and he only plays when he comes on the weekends.

          • It appears that I've upset poor Malphisto. And? It is with a wonderful sense of irony that he loves to write condescending responses while at the same time claiming to be the humble everyman. Sitting high in his inscrutable seat of power, looking down on the rest of the forum posters, he declares that any and all who oppose his absolute truth are heretics and blasphemers who aren't worthy of his attention. Which is to say, no matter how correct you may be in your opposition to his viewpoint, he's too much of an immature child to actually engage you in a conversation. When things don't go his way, he runs and hides, afraid of the confrontation that might ensue. He demonstrates the attitude of a despotic tyrant where there is only room for one viewpoint, his. I used to think this person had some admirable qualities. He has proven my view of him wrong.

              • First off, you didn't explain what was wrong ttk, so I'm gonna go ahead and consider that segment of your argument invalid. Second, gun skins and guardian customization are cosmetic too, so there would be no problem with that. Bungie wouldn't monetize guns or armor, so you can quit the slippery slope theories. This was just announced and people like you are already trying to predict the end of the world, the definition of straw man fallacy. Like all logical fallacies, it makes you sound stupid and deems your argument invalid.

                      • Just my opinion, but you take this way too seriously. It's a game. If it's fun, play it. If it's not, don't. If the cosmetic stuff eventually turns into micros that resemble pay to play and this bothers you, don't play it. If it doesn't bother you, then play it. It's really not that complicated.

One thing: Many, many other MMOs/games like Destiny employ cash shops, and yet never get to the point where the game is pay-to-win. Everything is cosmetic, and is done well enough to merit purchase. All this new addition will do is bring more revenue into the company. Now they can allow for free DLC/missions/quests/content, and not necessarily have to rely solely on DLC sales. http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2015/10/06/microtransactions-are-going-to-make-destiny-a-much-better-game/ http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/05/destiny-microtransactions/ http://kotaku.com/sources-destiny-will-get-paid-cosmetic-dlc-and-free-ne-1734800399 http://www.polygon.com/2015/10/5/9457851/destiny-microtransactions-emotes-tess-everis
Citing two anonymous sources who are "familiar with Destiny's development," Kotaku reports that Activision is looking to change its entire downloadable content plan for Destiny. Instead of releasing paid expansions like The Dark Below and House of Wolves, says Kotaku, Activision and Bungie will deliver new quests and missions for free — likely in "big drops every few months until the fall of 2016," when a full sequel to Destiny will arrive for $59.99.
This addition is a good thing. The game will only get better and cost less, if they keep it to cosmetics only, which they most probably will. They'll hopefully foresee the shitstorm that will occur if they don't.

Ahh, new Malphisto, you're back. Unfortunately I had the same reaction many of us did. That this will likely end with things being pay-to-win, people paying for shortcuts such as $2.00 for something like the Sleeper Stimulant. This isn't the Destiny I want. For the sake of argument let's pretend it's three weeks in the future and the Kotaku article about them releasing free content is proven true. Then what do we think of these cosmetic microtranstions? Provided they stay cosmetic, I don't see why it would be an issue for anyone. Isn't this what you want Malphisto, free content? Or are we so focused on the idea of cosmetic microtranstions and what they could become that we ignore that we could be getting free content as a trade off? If we are, then we are be unnecessarily belligerent (I argue we are far beyond that already, infact this post is unnecessarily belligerent). The fact that Malphisto freely speculated that these transactions will lead to something worse without even mentioning the possible trade off of free content Kotaku reported is a bit over the top. Again, Malphisto manipulating the public by distributing misleading information and providing discriminatory speculation without even mentioning it's positive result. Why? Because it's positive. Far be it from the minds of most Forum goers that something positive can come from something negative like microtranstions, especially in Destiny. I ask you, community, would we be ok with these microtranstions (provided they stay cosmetic), if it leads to free content? Or are we going to pick up our pitchforks and torches and follow Malphisto in the art of trying to manipulate everything Bungie does and leave out any positives as a way to get what he wants? Here is a Kotaku article that states the free DLC part. http://kotaku.com/sources-destiny-will-get-paid-cosmetic-dlc-and-free-ne-1734800399 Now here's the thing. Kotaku got a map of the Dreadnaught before it came out, one of the first to brake into the final story mission, and seem to be on top of news that involved Destiny. Now, they didn't pull this idea out of thin air, nor would they put their credibility on the line for something that they don't believe would have a good chance of happening.
