First Iron Banner Experience
So I have never been much of a Destiny PvPer because PvE kept me busy for the most part and I wasn't a huge fan of the small maps (I like the older PvP games like Halo 3). Anyway, since I have all the raid guns/gear and exotic guns/gear (minus bones of eao) and PoE is boring, I recently started playing more PvP and decided to do Iron Banner for the first time. I got all three toons to level 5, and here are my thoughts.
-The alt buff is incedible. I can't imagine getting three guys to rank 5 without it. Kudos to those who did.
-I had three IB weapons drop (two Redgast's and a Jolders). I did not see any other IB weapons drop besides these two heavies.
-There should be more bounty variety. Doing the same bounties every day is boring.
-The pricing really needs to be reworked. To get the gear and etheric light on every character requires 60k glimmer. Add the guns at 7k each and you need 75-100k to get everything. Either the glimmer cap should be raised or the prices should be dropped. After grinding to IB rank 5, it sucked to have to farm glimmer for hours.
-I know ToO is the PvP "end game," but the IB gear should be 42 light and guns should be 365. You can do PoE 32 and 34 in like an hour (total) and get a piece of 42 light gear, a 365 weapon and etheric light. IB takes a lot of time and effort, so the rewards should match that. PoE rewards are also free...
-Etheric light should be a free drop when you hit levels 3 and 5, respectively. See above re: insane costs.
-Overall, it is not worth the grind. Maybe lower prices and some free etheric light drops would make it better, but I'm still not sure it is worth it on a time to rewards basis.
What does everyone else think?
EDIT: I didn't notice the lag switching everyone always complains about (maybe 1 or 2 laggy games). Also, I thought there was a good variety of weapons being used, and I didn't think blink shotgunning was that bad either.
EDIT2: I forgot to mention one other improvement that I thought of while grinding. Instead of having the tempering buff increase by day, Lord Saladin should sell buffs with different values (equal to those from the different days). Players should be able to choose which day they want to purchase which buff. If I am out of town Friday through Sunday but have a ton of free time on Wednesday, I should be able to use the max buff that day.

1 RispondiThis past week was my 2nd IB and even though I got all 3 to rank 5 last time, my Hunter was the only one who got there last week. I was in no mood to grind glimmer after hitting rank 5. My KD has gone through the roof since the start of the last IB (0.6 before, 1.2 now). I'm at the point where after 800~ hours I'm burned out on PvE and am really starting to like PvP. I also happen to be better at it than I thought I would, which doesn't hurt.

POE is a completely risk free PVE mode that provides the best gear and armor currently available and, although it requires matchmaking at all levels above level 28, it does not take any time at all to get weapons, armor, and light! The most difficult thing about POE is the lack of matchmaking; that is, if you DO NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN Bungie's SOCIAL EXPERIEMENTS. For those of us that would rather play alone than LFG to play the content for which Bungie fails to provide matchmaking, Iron Banner is THE ONLY way to get etheric Light. After waiting a month for the opportunity to play IB, you have to grind for hours with each character to reach the levels where it can be purchased and then you have to grind for the glimmer to buy it. This is not the consequence of a risk-reward situation or a function of the hours invested, but rather a poor attempt at play manipulation by a bunch of dumb-asses that apparently have no clue about the motivations of their customers. This is not good game design, but rather the developers telling the players that they must play the way the developers want them to, or they will be punished by having to suffer severely disproportionate levels of effort and experience massive increases in both play and calendar time if you want to go it alone. I have never seen a company be so blatantly punitive to its customers when they want to enjoy the game they paid for in a manner other than that which the designers desire! Getting to Level 5 in Iron Banner, while not difficult, takes time and effort; much more time and effort than completing POE missions and the rewards for Iron Banner are essentially worthless compared to the rewards from POE. I cannot imagine why anyone that is able to play POE absent matchmaking would even bother with Iron Banner in light of the diminished returns relative to the significantly different levels of effort each requires. Bungie needs to focus on game design instead of social experiments...

Because...those hand-cannons are absolute beast..no question. I can tell by how a die which gun it was...especially the Last Word..I will be running and then I will just hear the sound of gun shots and I'm dead. Before I can react...it's like damn The best part is when you beat an exotic hand cannon those its the best feeling.

I agree with most of the comments here. The one thing I would like to see is that when IB comes around can we change it up so it is not just Control over and over again. Maybe do Control one day then Clash another or something to break up that monotony and have better map rotation. I can' tell you how many times I played and it just kept putting me on the same earth maps over and over again. Just needs some retooling to break that up better.

Agreed! For many reasons there are some folks like myself who just can't get to ToO, PoE 32+, or Raids. Iron Banner is the only matchmaking activity that provided Etheric light. Seems like 42 armor (like Variks offers) would be a nice reward to shoot for after a weeklong grind.

I highly agree on the fact that the "rewards" are highly over priced. I was busy most of the week of iron banner and I was grinding so hard just get my hunter to level 5. Once I was there I came to the sad conclusion that I wouldn't be able to get both guns and the etheric light so I only got timurs lash and the light which I'm okay with but would of liked both

2 RisposteI agree with most of what you're saying. Just imagine how it was a couple of months ago, before the alt boost, and before they lowered prices. Now THAT was a grindfest.

The crazy thing is they dropped the prices already, a few Iron Banners ago. It was even worse before, I think all the emblems and shaders were like 5k glimmer. I tapped out on rank 3 on my Hunter and Titan after I got enough EL to get my Hunter to level 34. I just couldn't bring myself to deal with the lag again for 2 more ranks on each to get those other 2 pieces of EL. The servers were terrible, there was a ton of lag switching, and it was just an awful experience overall this time around. PVP continues to get worse with each passing month and I've never seen a game where the PVP was the best in the beta build and got steadily worse as time went on.

6 RisposteThis was the first time in 3 months I did not get all characters to level 5 (5,5,3) mostly because of bad planning. - I would like to see light level 42 on all gear. ToO is way too fast to complete where the IB takes several days - Yes I agree that at levels 3 and 5 you should get an automatic drop of etheric light. - There should be a random chance (like exotics) to get etheric light after reaching level 3. Same with armor. - I absolutely hate ToO it is like a sprint vs the marathon of IB. Both should have somewhat equal rewards. They did not give us top light level with IB because of potential raiders whining.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I could understand the first IB being 32 stuff, but not the second or third. Can you believe the stuff use to cost more glimmer? A shader was 5,000 glimmer.

1 RispondiThe way I look at it, once you earn rank 3 you can get an etheric light and the chest piece which equates to a 42 light chest piece. It's your decision on whether or not you want to use it that way.

3 RisposteIB is a load of fun, and you'll only get better as you gain map knowledge, it's only now after a year that I really know the maps well. I think the bounties are set up that way to make it fun, i.e. everyone trying to capture zones, and it's not a rocket-fest, as people are using machine guns. You are right about the costs too.

1 RispondiI totally agree with your post. All iron banner armour should be max light. Dont understand thinking behind this. Takes a fair bit time to get level 5 so 42 light gear should be automatic. Was in first few ib if I remember correctly..

Here's what I did this week, I burned out all my radiant shards for glimmer, not enough. Then I searched online for farming options, got one but still, it took 2 hours to grind and get full glimmer. The only thing I would also request is to raise the glimmer cap.

I'm a PvE'r too, but when Iron Banner comes around... its on!!!!! I love IB. I got my titan and hunter to rank 5 this time, and next time I'll show my warlock some love too!

yeah I do believe the rewards are over priced but they used to cost more than they do now. Iron Banner gets better the second or third time you do the event because by then you will have all the shaders, emblems, and most gear pieces so you won't have to buy them again. You can just focus on getting the etheric light and the weapons you want.

Yeah it is not worth the grind. Good points about the rewards in iron banner compared to Poe. Makes no sense. But that's destiny in a nutshell.
